Total Energy Usage More Recent Data by Sector Residential Energy Use Our total energy use can be divided into three principal areas each of which consume approximately equal amounts of energy on an annual basis:
  • Electricity Generation
  • Space Heating
  • Transportation
World Energy Consumption: Fossil Fuels come in 3 principal forms from which many other products are derived:
  • Coal
  • Natural Gas
  • Crude Oil
And of course, the market is Volatile:

The primary energy input to generate electricity was 30.9 quads. About 2/3 of the energy was lost in conversion processes, leaving about 10 quads as electricity . Of the delivered energy about 2/3 was delivered to the residential/commercial sector and 1/3 to industry. Electricity as a percentage of total US energy use has been increasing ever since electricity was introduced. In 1973 about 25% of primary energy used to make electricity. In 1994 the percentage of energy used to make electricity had increased to 34% of total energy.

Renewable Energy Technologies Assistance There are a number of renewable energy technologies which may make both economic and environmental sense for your agency to investigate, either in the planning and design of new facilities or as an energy cost reduction strategy for existing facilities. These technologies may include, but are not limited to passive solar design, photovoltaic (solar electric), solar thermal water heating, biomass/bioenergy systems, and geothermal/ground-source heat pumps. Agencies are encouraged to work with the architectural and engineering firms assisting them in the planning and design of new facilities and renovations to assess options for cost-effectively employing renewable energy technologies. The Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy can provide interested agencies and their architectural and engineering firms with targeted information, technical assistance, and guidance in assessing the potential for using renewable energy technologies. Following is a brief introduction to some of the more commonly used renewable energy technologies and several strategies for your consideration. NOTE: This is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of all possible renewable energy technologies. For example, wind energy systems are not covered, however there are a few areas of the state (especially the higher mountain elevations in the southwestern part of the state and in some areas of Virginia's eastern shore) where the wind energy resource may be large enough to consider an application of this technology.

From biomass energy generated by the burning of wood debris in forest products company boilers to co-firing wood and rubber tire wastes in coal burning utility power plants to the use of solar energy and bio-fuels such as ethanol and soy-diesel, alternative energy efforts in the Delta are very active. This is the Trust's newest program service and one that has direct ties to our Carbon Sequestration program since planting trees on marginal farmland and later harvesting those trees for biomass energy production results in net reduction in carbon emissions relative to generating the same energy from fossil fuel combustion. ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SCHEMES SHARE IN £1.26 MILLION BOOST Projects in Scotland and Wales to heat homes using alternative fuel sources are to share £1.26 million government cash under a scheme designed to cut energy bills, combat greenhouse gases and tackle fuel poverty. Shetland's Hjaltland Housing Association (£429,446) and the Llandwddyn Community Biomass Scheme in Powys (£47,459) are among four new grants under the government's £50 million Community Energy programme, which helps to fund energy-saving schemes to heat homes, hospitals, schools and other public buildings. The Hjaltland scheme uses energy from waste to heat 125 new houses in the Shetland Islands' biggest housing development for 30 years. The Llandwddyn project's woodchip biomass boiler uses locally sourced wood to heat a school and community centre as well as houses. Other grants announced today are £746,642 to University College London, which supersedes a £140,000 scheme successful in the previous bidding round, and £42,009 to Angus Community Care Charitable Trust. The four schemes combined will cost almost £4million and cut carbon emissions by over 1,000 tonnes a year.

Biomass - energy from organic materials Introduction How it works More details Advantages ... Is it renewable?
Introduction
Wood was once our main fuel. We burned it to heat our homes and cook our food.
Wood still provides a small percentage of the energy we use, but its importance as an energy source is dwindling. Sugar cane is grown in some areas, and can be fermented to make alcohol, which can be burned to generate power in the same way as coal.
Alternatively, the cane can be crushed and the pulp (called "bagasse") can be burned, to make steam to drive turbines. Other solid wastes, can be burned to provide heat, or used to make steam for a power station.

BIOMASS: Valuable Trash Energy: Nonrenewable and renewable Most of the energy we use today comes from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels include coal, oil, and natural gas. Decaying plants and animals that have been buried between layers of earth and rock form fossil fuels. This process takes millions of years! We are consuming fossil fuels faster than they are created. We could run out of fossil fuels some day, and for this reason, they are considered nonrenewable Natural processes form renewable energy . Four energy alternatives that are being seriously studied are solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass . Renewable energy has been used since prehistoric times, but now there is an urgency to develop it further for two reasons:
  • Fossil fuels will run out some day, and
  • People are increasingly concerned about how fossil fuels affect global warming and air quality. Among other things many scientists suggest global warming is causing havoc with our weather systems. Biomass Power The term biomass is an abbreviation for biological mass, meaning the amount of vegetation found in a given area. Biomass contains stored
