Human Neurobiology
Biology 359/600A
Neurobiology is the study of the nervous system and how it works. The nervous system is the messaging system that controls every part of our bodies and tells us where we are in the world. In this online course, we examine how individual nerve cells work and how they are organized to process sensory information and motor responses.

Topics in Biology: Ecology/Environmental Biology
Biology 493E/600E The spring flora of the Upper Midwest offers the best opportunity to learn the process of plant identification. Throughout northern Illinois and adjacent Wisconsin there are a large assortment of plant communities from wetlands to dry prairies where many native and naturalized species thrive. In this course, students examine selected plant communities and the species that characterize them. We introduce notable species by both their Latin and English names and the characteristics by which scientists identify them. Field trips. BIOS 493E. TOPICS IN BIOLOGY: (3). Ecology/Environmental Biology. Lectures, discussions, and reports on topics of special interest in a particular field of biology. Topics may be selected in one or more fields of biology to a total of 6 semester hours toward any one degree.

This department is one of Bridgewater's largest, with six full-time faculty and more than 200 majors. The Biology Department offers introductory and advanced courses that prepare majors either for immediate employment, or to enter high-level studies at graduate or professional schools. The department also serves a service function in that all Bridgewater students must take at least one biology course; most take two or three.
The Biology Department offers pre-professional programs in the areas of Medicine, Dentistry, Physical Therapy and Veterinary Science. These programs prepare interested students for graduate work in selected areas. The department also offers dual degree programs in forestry (with Duke University) and Veterinary Science (with Virginia Tech). Students should contact Dr. Lawson for more details.
Rapidly expanding knowledge in cell biology, molecular genetics, and ecology assures bright futures for well-prepared biologists. With a baccalaureate degree, recent graduates have become life science teachers, laboratory technicians in industry, allied health, and government, environmental and conservation professionals, health officers, case workers, naturalists, pharmaceutical salespersons, and other varied occupations. With graduate or professional degrees, Bridgewater alumni are successful physicians, research scientists, veterinarians, environmental lawyers, dentists, physical therapists, genetic counselors, forestry and wildlife specialists, and other varied professions.

ABSTRACT
In our changing world where university students are demanding a greater say in their tertiary education, and in particular are demanding a greater flexibility in the way they receive their instruction, it is imperative that we investigate and experiment with course delivery strategies that fulfil these expectations. Online delivery of learning materials offers teacher and students a more flexible mode that may better suit the learning style and commitments of many of the students. First Year Biology at the University of Sydney caters for a large number of students with varying incoming academic backgrounds and interests. In an attempt to offer them greater flexibility in the learning environment we first launched a Virtual Resources Room (VRR) offering access to various learning materials and subsequent development of communications capabilities turned the VRR into a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
