Biology education and B Guide - Resources and Review
Introductory biology course. Includes chapters on chemistry, large molecules, cell biology, enzyme biochemistry, photosynthesis, genetics, DNA and immunology.

Document describing topics and themes considered essential to teach in every introductory microbiology laboratory, regardless of its emphasis. It is derived from the views of around 150 microbiology educators from a variety of colleges and universities. It contains sections on laboratory safety, laboratory skills, laboratory thinking skills, and laboratory content.

Background information and links to resources on the largest invertebrates on the planet. Includes an illustrated history of mythology surrounding the molluscs, from mermen in the 1500s to tales of squid as monsters in the 1800s. Describes how squid eat, move, reproduce, and defend themselves, and details a comparison between squid and snails.

    HONORS/ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES
    AP Biology Online Course
Beginning in Fall 2001, we are offering AP Biology as an online course through UCCP (the University of California College Prep Initiative). Here's how it will work: If you take the class, you will be scheduled into a computer lab for one class period each day, where you will be able to access the online course, which includes multimedia lectures, self-checks, activities, quizzes and tests. (We may opt to do off-line paper tests and/or quizzes.) They claim this takes most or all of the 5 class periods per week. Attendance will be taken. The online instructor will be contacted via email and will have office hours. This person will answer your academic questions and will grade your assignments. There will also be a technical support contact in case you encounter online difficulties. You will also be expected to do reading and homework from the textbook, which you would probably do at home each day. This may take an hour each day, and successful completion of this work may be required before you can do subsequent online work. Some of this homework will be submitted online, some will be faxed to the online instructor. The year-long course includes 12 2-hour labs that are sprinkled in from September to April. You will complete lab notebooks, which will be sent to the instructor.

We hope these links will be useful in exploring bioinformatics, biology, and medicine. Also included are links to web sites of interest to science educators. Only sites that provide open access to substantial amounts of their content are listed. Please note that this page is still under active construction and the categories are very loose at this point, so it may be valuable to look through several categories to find particular items of interest. Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Tools Biology Workbench A web-integrated access portal to numerous databases and analysis tools Protein Explorer A protein visualization tool, useful in conjunction with several Biology Workbench applications. Protein Explorer is a RasMol-like interface implemented in Chime, but the Protein Explorer can offer much greater assistance and automation. Thus, the Protein Explorer can make visual exploration of protein structure much more accessible to novices, occasional users, or nonspecialists, as well as making it much more convenient than RasMol, even for experts. See in particular Lesson Plans for Molecular Visualization and DNA Structure: An Interactive Animated Nonlinear Tutorial for Protein Explorer educational materials.

"I've been hearing a lot about Distance Learning, lately. I think I'd like to try that out," said the English professor.
"Great," responded the department chairperson. "We need to enter that market and provide access to a new audience of students. I'm glad to hear of your interest."
"So, what do I do now? How do I go about creating my class online?" the professor asked.
"Uh . . . . Uh . . . . Let me get back to you," stumbled the chair. If this is the way your school handles emerging technology issues, join the club. Generally speaking, most colleges and universities are not prepared to deal with electronic education issues efficiently. Rarely have schools developed strategies regarding Distance Education standards, policies, or procedures. They are often stumped by how to effectively help faculty design courses, plan distance education programs (Rockwell, et al. "Incentives"), and/or determine acceptable standards for technology requirements. In fact, at Johnson County Community College, the Distance Learning Coordinating Committee determined that the following constituted barriers to successful online education (Table 1):

Steve Andre , iWorx/CB Sciences Physiology teaching kits and Labs on CD, and Labs on Line from iWorx/CB Sciences make it easy to do human and animal physiology experiments includes cardiovascular, neuromuscular, and respiration exercises. Teaching kits include all the hardware (except computer), software, and courseware needed to do over 150 experiments with multiple exercises. Data collection and analysis can easily be accomplished with the “click” of a button or two. Users can also complete experiments of their own design with the same “click and play” ease. The same types of experiments can be done without data recording hardware, on a computer in lab or at home with Labs on CD or over the Internet with Labs on Line . With Labs on CD or Labs on Line products from iWorx, students record and analyze data just as they would with a physiology teaching kit. Animations, illustrations, and digital movies compliment each lab exercise so students have an understanding of how the experiment was conducted. Participants in this workshop will be able to collect and analyze data with Labs on CD/Labs on Line.
