Math 202, Section 1: Calculus II
Fall 1998
Daily schedule of readings, homework assignments and so forth
Instructor: Alan Durfee
  • Office: Clapp 404B
  • Telephone x2299 (with answering machine)
  • email: adurfee
  • Office hours: By appointment
Lectures: Tuesday, Thursday 8:00-9:15 in Clapp 401. Fourth Hour: Friday 1:00-1:50 in Clapp 401. The fourth hour will be used for discussing homework problems, etc. It is not required. Text: "Calculus", vol. 2 by Ostebee and Zorn, together with the "Student Answer Booklet". (The book we are using is the 1997 edition with the blue-brown cover, not the preliminary edition.) The core of the course is Chapters 7 through 11. Chapters 5 and 6 are more or less review and will be covered rapidly. Chapters 12 and 13 will be covered as time permits. Homework: Homework can be handed in during class or put in the envelope outside my office door. Graded homework can be picked up any time from the other envelope there. Homework can be redone and handed in again, if done promptly (ie, within a few days). The graders reserve the right not to accept redone homework that is too late. All homework is due at 5 PM on the date given, unless stated otherwise. Labs: There will be a few math "labs" which will be done in groups of two or three. These will involve exploring a topic in depth, usually with the assistance of a computer program. They are intended to be an introduction to mathematics as an intellectual discipline which has fascinated many of the world's greatest thinkers for over two thousand years, and also an introduction to a subject with applications to many other areas such as economics, finance, biology, physics and so forth.

Most of it is dry, staid lists of words and definitions, but every now and then, a bit of the authors' personality shows through. In "Bailliere's Comprehensive Veterinary Dictionary" by D. C. Blood and Virginia Studdert, the following entry appears on page 133, right between Brunner's glands and brush border: "Brunus edwardii: the urban, companion animal bear, much admired for its low food requirements and excellent house training, a high emotional output and complete freedom from disease. Called also Ursus theodorus (USA) and Pooh, Paddington or Brideshead bear (UK)." (I could add that they may be free from disease, but they do seem to be susceptible to lacerations requiring surgical repair...) biology

Power to the People: The Time Might Be Right for Distributed Electrical Power Generation
We may be moving into an era when most new electrical power is generated at or near our homes.
Power lines For more than 100 years, most of the electricity used in the United States has been generated in large power plants, each one typically providing enough power to serve nearly a million people. There are two main reasons for this:
  • It has been cheaper and more efficient to build and operate one large power plant than a number of smaller plants producing the same total amount of energy; and
  • Electric power can be shipped long distances over large, high-voltage AC transmission lines with relatively low losses.
However, because of recent changes in technology and increasing concerns about protecting the environment, we may be moving into an era when much, if not most, of the new electrical power is generated at or near our homes. What are the new technologies? There are four relatively recent developments that are already making a major change in the production of power.
Renewables
Once again, there is rapidly growing interest in generating some electrical power on-site with renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbine generators. Because of state subsidies and higher electricity prices, these systems can pay back their high initial cost in five to ten years. Moreover, as the sales of these systems increase, the price has been dropping, and the efficiency of the systems is improving. For most homeowners with a roof that is suitable to hold solar panels, the most economical arrangement is to purchase a system with a maximum output of 2 to 2.5 kilowatts. This will produce more electricity than many homes need during bright sunny days, so that the extra electricity can flow back onto the power grid, making the electric power meter actually runs backward. Then at night and on cloudy days, the homeowner draws power as usual from the grid. With today's electricity price structure, this system is worth serious consideration.
