Please note: The official College Board® Course Description is available below in "More."
AP Biology could be the last general biology course your students will ever take. It's a comprehensive survey of general biology that includes biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular genetics and heredity, biotechnology, diversity, structure and function of organisms, and ecology and evolution. The topic outline is so broad that you have the chance to include everything you ever wanted a student to know about general biology. If you teach the course conceptually, that is; if you focus on the most important ideas that form our current understanding of each topic, then you might also have the time! Teachers who help students to see the overarching themes that link topics can create a dynamic, thought-provoking course which will help students to experience science, rather than memorize it. Descriptive and experimental lab exercises are a vital part of this experience.
The AP Course Description identifies eight major themes that link the topics into a unified conceptual framework. It's important to help students recognize how every topic can be viewed in this thematic perspective. We can look at how the structure of macromolecules determines their function as well as how the structures are adaptive, how their activity is regulated, and how the scientific process has helped us understand them. One can study the plant kingdom from the very same points of view. Instead of restricting evolution to a discrete topic, evidence of evolution and the role of natural selection in the evolutionary process can be discussed throughout the course.

Basic Structure of the Department
  • The Department divides its courses of study into four categories. Majors and Minors are possible in any of the four. Any of the four majors can be modified.
  • The four possible majors and minors are:
    • BIOL: Biology. A broad-based major that allows students to explore any or all of the main sub-disciplines of biology. This major encourages breadth by requiring all three introductory courses (Bio 14, 15/19, and 16) and allowing maximum freedom in selection of upper-level courses.
    • BBCM: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. This major gives a strong background for graduate study in medicine or the biomedical sciences. Students who want to complete a BBCM major should try to begin early as this major has more strict requirements than any of the others.
    • BGEN: Genetics, Cell and Developmental Biology. This major emphasizes the study of individual organisms at the molecular and cellular level. Students gain expertise in the structure of the prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell, developmental processes, and the use of modern molecular and cellular techniques in addressing scientific questions. This major is much like BBCM but has more flexibility in choosing upper-level courses.
    • BEEB: Environmental and Evolutionary Biology. This major emphasizes the relationships between organisms and their environment. It provides a foundation for understanding populations and communities of organisms, environmental sciences, conservation, and evolution. This major is sometimes modified with Environmental Studies or Environmental Science.

ECOTEAM INFORMATION An EcoTeam is a program where college students lead environmental science lessons/activities to local 3rd graders (teachers can apply for a student to come to their class on line). GLAXOSMITHKLINE COURSE WORK All biology majors take a sequence of lower division biology courses, followed by a sequence of 22-24 credits of upper division biology courses. The flexibility built into upper division course requirements permits students to specialize in different subdivisions of biology. For instance, students who are interested in a career in medicine have the opportunity to take upper division courses which are more human-based in concept. Top of Page

General Information
Central Washington University does not offer an Optometry program but does offer an advising program and prerequiste courses necessary for potential admission to an Optometry program. There are seventeen schools in the US and Canada that offer Optometry Professional Degree Programs. A list of these schools, important links and other information can be found at Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) or American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) Most schools now expect you to have completed your four year degree prior to beginning your Optometry training, although in exceptional circumstances you can finish your final year of undergraduate work as part of your first year of Optometry School. No particular major is required. You will be expected to have taken a well-rounded college curriculum including humanities courses. The non-science requirements are, for the most part, satisfied by your gen-ed courses. You should check on the specific requirements for each school to which you plan to apply. A table comparing some of these requirements is available at Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) or, if you picked up a paper copy, that table is attached. You should still check with the individual schools.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Role of Laboratory and Field Instruction in Biology Education Philosophy The study of biology provides students with opportunities to develop an understanding of our living world. Biology is the study of life and its evolution; of organisms and their structures, functions, processes, and interactions with each other and with their environments. Scientific inquiry is the primary process by which scientific knowledge is gained. It involves the basic skills of questioning, prediction, qualitative and quantitative observation, classification, inference, communication and, additionally, integrated skills such as identifying and controlling for variables, generating procedures, planning strategies for testing hypotheses and answering questions, and for collecting and interpreting appropriate data. The knowledge of biology includes scientific data, concepts, hypotheses, theories, methodology, use of instruments, and conceptual themes. Biologists recognize that knowledge based upon experimental results and accurate observations is gained through a variety of experiences, including the pursuit of cause and effect relationships. Thus, the role of the laboratory and field learning becomes a key component in understanding biology. Laboratory activities and inquiry provide students with opportunities to observe, sample, experience, and experiment with scientific phenomena in their quest for knowledge of living things.

Summer 2004 Studies In Evolution... I'm glad you took the time to check out the website. I'll try to post things on a fairly regular basis as students contact me about the Evolution readings. E-mail me when you read this. Give your name, since I probably won't know you from your e-mail address name...
Course Description: A.P. Biology Advanced Placement Biology exposes the student to a survey of the material in a first year college course for majors. Further, it emphasizes the syllabus recommended by the College Board. the student will be encouraged to sit for the A.P. Biology Examination in May. Prerequisite : Grade of at least a B in biology and Chemistry, and approval of the instructor. Physics is a pre-or corequisite. Since we will meet five out of every six class days, we will probably realize a total of 130 class meetings before the Advanced Placement exam. For this reason students will be expected to do a significant amount of reading and independent study. A.P. Bio is a rigorous course, but all students accepted for the course have done well in their prior science courses and are fully capable of excelling in A.P. Biology. Some students will not have to change a thing about the way they study; others will have to make some changes so they can make much more efficient use of their study time.

BIOLOGY Professor Gary L. Miller, chair • 214 SHOEMAKER HALL • (662) 915-7203 PREMEDICAL AND PREDENTAL STUDENTS considering majoring in biology are urged to follow the recommended biology class sequence and to declare a major by the end of their sophomore year. Health preprofessional students may find a biology major particularly appropriate for their career goals. SECONDARY EDUCATION STUDENTS. A B.A. degree with a major in biology is appropriate preparation for teachers of biology in secondary school. With appropriate electives, one can satisfy the requirements of Class A certification in secondary teaching from the Mississippi Department of Education. Students should consult the School of Education for information about secondary education certification of high school science teachers. BASIC REQUIREMENTS. The B.A. and B.S. degree programs and a minor in biology require Biology 160, 161, 162 and 163 as initial courses. These courses provide the foundation for subsequent work and are prerequisites for admission into advanced major courses. Biology 102, 103, 104 and 105, intended for nonmajors, may not be used to satisfy departmental core requirements for biology majors and minors. Supplementary Honors sections Biology 164H and 165H are available. Students should take into consideration that 42 hours of course work at the 300 level or above are required for graduation, as are C averages in their major, minor, and all course work applying to their degree.
