Biographical Information
I have been teaching at the same school for six years now. I teach 7th grade Social Studies and Science. Originally, I planned on becoming a lawyer but plans changed after leaving D.C. as an intern and going to NY for a week to visit my cousin. It was there that he inspired me to become a teacher. Each day I would read to him, take him to school and participate in his school activities, which really changed me. I have been blessed with a wonderful family. My dad (who plays golf with me), mom and my brother – Mark are close knit. In my pastime, I love to travel. I have been to countries like Japan, Malaysia, Singapore (I’m originally from here), Thailand, Nepal, Mexico, China and Canada. I even lived in Mexico for 4 months as a missionary. I can still speak a bit of Spanish if given the opportunity. So here’s a bit about me!

Role of Laboratory and Field Instruction in Biology Education Philosophy The study of biology provides students with opportunities to develop an understanding of our living world. Biology is the study of life and its evolution; of organisms and their structures, functions, processes, and interactions with each other and with their environments. Scientific inquiry is the primary process by which scientific knowledge is gained. It involves the basic skills of questioning, prediction, qualitative and quantitative observation, classification, inference, communication and, additionally, integrated skills such as identifying and controlling for variables, generating procedures, planning strategies for testing hypotheses and answering questions, and for collecting and interpreting appropriate data. The knowledge of biology includes scientific data, concepts, hypotheses, theories, methodology, use of instruments, and conceptual themes. Biologists recognize that knowledge based upon experimental results and accurate observations is gained through a variety of experiences, including the pursuit of cause and effect relationships. Thus, the role of the laboratory and field learning becomes a key component in understanding biology. Laboratory activities and inquiry provide students with opportunities to observe, sample, experience, and experiment with scientific phenomena in their quest for knowledge of living things.

Happy April, whether it brings Spring to you in the northern hemisphere or Fall in the southern hemisphere - the change of seasons is welcome! In the spirit of spring cleaning, I have given my multiple intelligences pages a face lift. The splash page can be found at http://surfaquarium.com/MI/ I was looking to give the pages a more polished, professional look, as opposed to the child-centered design I had used in the past. Let me know what you think! This month's newsletter is a special double-issue that touts the best biology resources on the Web. Biology is taught from the earliest grades through advanced placement high school courses. With Internet access in the classroom, the study of the life sciences become even more exciting and meaningful as students perform virtual dissections, look at small worlds close up, and experiment creating entirely new forms of life online. This month's newsletter offers a host of great online biology resources. Of course, you can view more top resources visiting Innovative Teaching at http://surfaquarium.com/IT/CONTENT/biology.htm

Summary: The Bio21 conference 2003 was the first conference of its kind sponsored by Geospiza, a local biotech company that specializes in software development for molecular biology. One of the goals of the conference was to bring educators together to talk about what it means to teach biology in the 21st century and discuss the topics in bioinformatics that should be included in the current biology/pre-med/microbiology curricula. The meeting was small with about 80-100 attendees. This was a good size since it allowed an opportunity for faculty to get to know each other over the course of the meeting. Most of the people attending the meeting had an interest in integrating bioinformatics into their curriculum and were looking for good ideas from faculty that had succeeded. Some faculty were interested in finding out more information about degree programs in Bioinformatics. There are only a few colleges in the United States that offer such program and representatives were at the meeting and participated in a panel discussion. This was very informative as they presented some of the challenges associated with starting such a program, the types of classes/coursework that are part of the curriculum, and the types of jobs that are available for students who complete these programs.

Our goal is to use research-based pedagogy to teach our combined majors/non-majors introductory biology course. This one semester course covers evolution, genetics, molecular biology, and ecology with emphases on the concepts most relevant to understanding the biological sciences and their impacts on society. The course is multi-media intensive: videos, animations, simulations, and web-based activities, are included and the course is managed using WebCT. The pedagogy replaces lecture with a variety of interactive activities where students discover by doing. Biweekly sessions are each composed of pre-class (90 minutes), in-class (150 minutes) and post-class (60 minutes) activities focusing on a major topic. Each section had 60 undergraduates (all with laptop computers), 1 instructor, and 3 teaching assistants. All assigned work was evaluated to make sure students were keeping up. Formative student assessments, using the WebCT quiz tool, included unsupervised reviews for the pre- and post-class activities, in-class concept questions, and student essays on conceptual questions. Summative assessments included three exams, a cumulative final, and a group or individual project. Diagnostic results indicate learning gains in the 15% to 50% range depending upon subject, diagnostic, and whether or not the diagnostic was part of the final exam.

International Society for History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Biology
Quinnipaic College, Wednesday July 18, 2001
Through their teaching, writing, and public presentations many ISHPSSBers promote the constructively critical analysis of science among students, practicing scientists, science studies scholars, and the wider public. The idea of a pre-conference workshop is for ISHPSSBers to share how we address this challenge. To get the ball rolling the Education Committee has arranged three presenters for the 2001 meetings. We hope this will incite others to offer to share their wares before and at future ISHPSSB meetings. A lunch meeting will be held during the conference to plan future pre-conference education workshops.
This workshop consists of three sessions, two in the morning; one in the afternoon. These are experiential sessions. That is, instead of the session leaders telling us how they teach, participants experience the kinds of teaching the session leaders are exploring and reflect on the pedagogical issues raised. Participants are encouraged to attend the full day to compare and contrast the different approaches.
Logistics: Indicate on the ISHPSSB Conference registration form that you will attend the workshop and need Wednesday lunch. Indicate also if you need Tuesday night dormitory accommodation and breakfast, available at the same (low) cost. There will be no cost for the workshop, but please email peter.taylor@umb.edu if you will be attending so sufficient copies of the handouts can be made.

    Why Biology at Leeds?
    Who are we?
The School of Biology is one of three schools within the Faculty of Biological Sciences. We occupy our own building, completed in 1997, which houses both teaching and research space. Over fifty permanent lecturing staff are organised into six research groupings, covering areas such as evolution, parasitology, immunology, development, biomechanics, ecology, animal physiology, agriculture, genetics and plant molecular biology. Such a broad range of interests and activities extends to multidisciplinary work with other schools within the faculty, other schools within the University and to other Universities, both in the UK and abroad.
    Our principles
    Resources, Facilities and Initiatives.
The most important resource in the School is its staff, the lecturing staff, the staff who support the students, those who administer the School and those who provide technical support for research and teaching. We have a teaching office located in our reception area which deals specifically with enquiries and administrative issues for our students. The vast majority of our student administration is done within the School, which means that we can get to know our students personally.
