Biography resources: Finding information on the famous, infamous, and obscure
Vol. 63 No. 1 by Susan A. Schreiner and Michael A. Somers Finding biographical information on the Internet is both time-consuming and frustrating. While any particular name can retrieve a number of hits on any search engine of your choice, finding current, accurate biographies can be difficult. Fortunately, the Internet is a rich source of diverse biographical information, and the following sites will guide users to an array of information on numerous topics. This collection is by no means comprehensive (what guide on the Internet is?), but the sites were chosen for the depth of their articles or the sheer bulk of biographical materials available. BIO and BIOBIBLIOGRAPHIC RESOURCES A nybody who decides to embark on the studies of life and professional and social activities of the individual members of the "Russia abroad" community, will often face obstacles and "loose ends". This is particularly true for the population that fled Russia after the Revolution. Very often, for political reasons, those who already had records in the pre-Revolutionary biographical sources became non-existent for compilers of the Soviet biographies. The achievements of those who became famous in exile were not noted in their homeland for many years. A

Another difficulty is that there are few guides specifically on how to do biographical research, for guides usually cover introductions to disciplines. Our survey of biographical sources eventually is broken down by discipline, but first there are general questions to answer that will help to better direct your research strategy. W hat is the nationality or citizenship of the figure?
W hat languages do you read?
I n what discipline is the figure active?
I n what time period was the figure active?
I s the figure still alive?
W hat level of detail do you need on a particular figure?

Courtesy: Indiana State Museum George Rogers Clark was the second son of John and Ann Rogers Clark. Both families were Virginia landholders, and after their marriage they moved to a 400 acre farm left to Clark by his father, Jonathan. This land was located on the Rivanna River, two miles east of Charlottesville and two and one-half miles northwest of Shadwell, where Thomas Jefferson was born. Their first son, Jonathan, was born in 1750, and their second son, George, in 1752. In 1757 the Clarks sold their land and moved to a small plantation in the southwest corner of Caroline County, VA, which had been left to them by an uncle, John Clark. George's boyhood was probably typical of rural Virginia at the time. He would have learned to plant, trap, hunt, ride and wrestle. He probably received most of his schooling at home from relatives. From his later journals, we learn that he almost invariably bought some books when he returned to Williamsburg, so he must have been well-read, and his writing is well above average for the period. Although the facts are not proven by records of the school, some historians contend that when George was 11, he and Jonathan were sent to live with their grandfather, John Rogers, in order to attend a private school on the Mattapony River run by Donald Robertson, and that George was sent home after six or eight months. (Others known to have been enrolled at the time were James Madison and John Tyler.) If these tales are true, this schooling was probably the only formal education Clark received.
