Indexes over 365 biographical dictionaries; good for finding information aboutauthors. BIOGRAPHICAL dictionaries contain information about people.
http://www.cnu.edu/library/itg/BioInfo.html
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SELECTED SOURCES Research on most subjects can be approached through the lives of individuals involved with the topic. For example, to learn more about the polio vaccine, you should read about Jonas Salk, its developer. The way you search for biographical information will depend on the question being asked and the amount and extent of information needed. General steps would be: 1. use the online catalog to locate books about (subject or word searches) or by (author search) the individual; 2. consult a general or subject encyclopedia; 3. use a biographical index; 4. look in a biographical dictionary; 5. use Newsbank for current newspaper articles on the individual; 6. ask a Reference Librarian for assistance. Finding information on famous people is not difficult; it's the not-so-famous which can be more complicated. Knowing basic information about the person such as nationality, profession, and whether they are alive today can simplify your search. BIOGRAPHICAL INDEXES are indirect sources of information. They index the biographical literature which appears in books, periodicals, newspapers and reference sources. Author Biographies Master Index (Ref PN452 A96) Indexes over 365 biographical dictionaries; good for finding information about authors. Current edition in Reference; others in the General Collection.

A biography is a written account of a person's life. Some biographical dictionaries simply list essential facts about a person, while other sources present the facts in a narrative form using complete sentences. Some sources include a list of bibliographic references which could be used for finding additional biographical information. The best place to go for biographical dictionaries is a research library. If you can go to such a library, you should do so. When you get there, look for the information, or reference, desk and ask the librarian for help. If you cannot get to a research library, you can use the Internet to locate biographical dictionaries . If you are taking a Web-based course, look for resource links on the Web pages of that course. Using Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Handbooks, and Other Quick Reference Works
Excellent quick references Encyclopedias In addition to general encyclopedias like the Britannica and the Encyclopedia Americana , many subjects are covered by specialized encyclopedias. For example, topics of concern to educators are covered in the Encyclopedia of Educational Research. Articles in this reference work are well documented research articles written by professional educators for other educators. As with general encyclopedias, works such as the Encyclopedia of Educational Research are excellent starting points for investigating a research topic.
