Biographical works in the ISU Library can be found by keyword or subject searching in the Library Catalog. Keyword search examples are: biography and Thomas Jefferson, or: biography and Abelard. When subject searching for biographical works, the Library Catalog will subdivide biography in a number of ways, such as: geographically (e.g. BiographyUnited States), by time period (e.g. Biography19 th Century or BiographyMiddle Ages), or by type of resource (e.g. Biography20 th CenturyDictionaries). Indexes and Guides to Biographical Sources
The following is a selective list of biographical sources at the Research Libraries and is in no way comprehensive. The emphasis is on those basic and important tools which will satisfy a specific informational need, or lead the researcher to more specialized resources in the field. These sources are complemented by the Library's collection of encyclopedias, both general and specialized, which provide succinct biographical data on many individuals. Many electronic indexes are available, and are discussed in the "Electronic Resources" section of this research guide. Almanac of Famous People (Detroit: Gale Research Co., irregular; latest edition is available at the Information Desk in Room 315). This reference work includes both historical and contemporary figures. For each person, it gives one or more sources for further information, taken from a list of approximately 360 biographical dictionaries and related works. Particularly useful for its chronological index (enumerating those who were born or died on a particular date), geographic index (wherein individuals are arranged under place of birth or death), and occupational index.

There are also many useful works available in the reference rooms of the Beinecke and Sterling. All of the reference works in the reading room and lobby of the Beinecke have been cataloged in Orbis. Octavo reference works with the exception of "Z" call numbers are in the reading room. The reference works on the shelves in the lobby are "Z" call numbers and oversize. In addition, there is an area known as stack reference, located in stack area 1 on our level, where less frequently used reference works are shelved. These, too, are cataloged in Orbis. We also need to make use of Sterling's reference room holdings for many general works. We do have the option to expand our reference holdings as "urgent" needs are identified, but keep in mind that those books we do purchase are paid for by the general Beinecke book fund.

by H.C.G. Matthew (Editor), and Brian Harrison (Editor). Oxford University Press. This massive, 60-volume set coordinates the research of some 10,000 specialists into a collection of 50,000 biographies of men and women "who have shaped all aspects of the British past." While this collection is an important reference resource, the collection does not come cheap. Also, this newest edition has been criticized for a number of errors related to the biographical entries for Jane Austen and others.

You will want to look at the titles that just have the author's name as subject heading as well as look at the ones with subdivisions: Biography, Correspondence, Diaries, Family, interviews. Another approach to finding biographies in QCAT is to perform a keyword search using the term "biography" (in the subject field) and the name of the person. However, this method will not return a list of all the books that will contain biographical information on your subject. Consult biographical dictionaries to get brief information about people, dates and events. Biographical dictionaries often contain lists of a writer's complete works, as well as lists of related secondary sources and criticism, including book-length biographies. Two categories of biographical dictionary are broadly useful for literary study. National biographies contain articles concerning historically important residents of a particular country; literary biographies collect the biographies of important writers. You can find specialized biographical dictionaries by doing a subject-heading search for biography in QCAT, e.g.

A look at Rabbinic biographical dictionaries published since 1950
Avraham Greenbaum

Jerusalem, Israel
Abstract
There were some early attempts to compile rabbinic biographical dictionaries, the most serious of which was a dictionary of living rabbis with addresses and brief biographies (19212). After the Holocaust, and continuing until today, a number of such works were published. Our list is representative and tries to cover different types. Some of these works reach back into the Middle Ages, and in one multivolume project even to the "Creation of the World". But the most useful are the ones dealing with the rabbis of a defined geographic area. While most writers are rabbis themselves, those with bibliographic training tone down the hagiographic element and concentrate on factual bio-bibliographic information.

-Biographical Dictionaries
Biographical Dictionary Includes over 28,000 'notable men and women who have shaped our world from ancient times to the present day' (quote). The dictionary can be searched by name, year, profession and other keywords. Being a dictionary, the entries are brief, in many instances occupying only one or two lines. This is most noticeably the case for non-American based figures with a random search on some notable and not so notable figures confirming the fact. For instance, George Washington, Richard Nixon and Arnold Schwarzenegger each are given 14-16 lines, while Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and Picasso each occupy only 3 lines. I was pleasantly surprised to see entries, though again brief, for less notable non-American figures such as (taking Irish examples) Van Morrison, Albert Reynolds, Bertie Aherne, and Dick Spring.
Currency at first seems assured, as a check on recently deceased persons confirmed. However, I couldn't help noticing entries that seem to have nothing post-1996 to say about their subject (?). Furthermore, merely listing the title and birth date of Prince Edward, son of Elizabeth II, (and nothing of his short-lived marine career, stage interest or marriage) while listing the novels of Jeffrey Archer (but little else, not even the party chairmanship) constitutes balanced entries. Again, I must emphasis, the entries are in the main very brief. However, brief does not have to mean uninformative. Information I could not extract from the site included details of the body responsible for the resource. (I will investigate same in the near future, or else it may become necessary to cease listing this site).

BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARIES give brief background information on important people such as their dates of birth and death, educational and professional history, and what significant things they have accomplished. (Note: Biographical dictionaries often call themselves "directories" or "who's who")
Examples:
Many of the most popular biographical dictionaries are located on Reference Table 1 behind the Reference Desk but there are also others throughout the library. There are also several online biographical dictionaries available through the library's "Indexes and Databases" webpage such as:
Biography Resource Center Full-text biographical information on more than 185,000 people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas.
Biography and Genealogy Master Index Indexes current and retrospective biographical dictionaries and Who's Who that cover both contemporary and historical figures, providing citations to biographies of individuals from every field of activity and from all areas of the world.
LexisNexis Academic (Choose "Reference" and then "Biographical Information") Full-text articles about contemporary politicians, business executives, etc.
