BLOUNT, Charles (1654-93)
The Conquest of Granada An Appeal from the Country to the City (1679) and A Just Vindication of Learning (1679) were written in an obviously political idiom, Blount consistently drew the connections between what he regarded as civil tyranny and religious deviance. Similarly his other early works Anima mundi (1679) and Great is Diana (1680), although apparently only engaging with pagan and corrupt religion, also indicted false political authorities. The other major publication of these turbulent years, an edition of Philostratus' Life of Apollonius (1680), indicated the intellectual range of Blount's writing. Unlike the other contributions, this work was not contrived as public polemic but composed as the work of a scholar and renaissance erudit . During the rest of the 1680s, faced with the political reaction against the defeated Whig antagonists of popery and tyranny that saw Algernon Sidney and Earl Russell executed, and John Locke exiled to the Low Countries, Blount withdrew from reckless public debate. He published amongst a number of minor works an introductory historical text for schools (1683) and edited an edition of Herbert of Cherbury's

It is any reference book that contains predominantly biographical articles. Usually the articles are arranged alphabetically by the name of the figure discussed, but they can be arranged in any fashion. Some have lengthy entries, other have entries that are just a few lines long. They are as diverse as human endeavor with one unifying feature - biographies as entries. A few guides to biographical dictionaries and other biographical resources have been published. They are described in the section on General Resources for All Countries within the biographical section of this course. B elow you can peruse annotations of important biographical dictionaries for all of the Slavic and East European countries. Please note that many sources that are included in the K.G. Biographical Resources
If you know the artist's name, consult biographical dictionaries to learn some basic, but important facts about the artist. Often, these publications are organized by regions (e.g., Dictionary of New Orleans Artists ), by subject (e.g., Dictionary of Marine Artists ), by media (e.g., Dictionary of Western Sculptors in Bronze ), or by time periods (e.g., Handbook of 17th-, 18th- and 19th-Century American Painters ). Please see our appendix for a comprehensive bibliography. Biographical dictionaries provide vital statistics, including life dates; locations of birth, death, and activity; school affiliations including where the artist studied or taught; and memberships in artistic clubs or societies such as the National Academy of Design. Some dictionaries also provide variant spellings of the artist's name, information on when and where the artist exhibited, or list the whereabouts of the artist's major works. Because an artist might be listed in more than one dictionary, checking several might help you develop a greater understanding of the artist.

Biographical Dictionaries
Biography collected in dictionary form reaches its highest quality in what is known as national biography, collected sketches of distinguished people in the history of a nation. Most countries have produced one or more national biographies—in fact, it is hard to find a country without one. American national biographies come in various shapes and sizes, but there is only one of real quality: the Dictionary of American Biography. While some of the others provide certain desirable details, such as portraits or more obscure subjects, the DAB is the best scholarly set, with signed articles and bibliographies, on the order of the British Dictionary of National Biography. The DAB is a 21-volume set of 13,600 alphabetical biographies on notable (but dead) Americans. The original set was published between 1928 and 1937 by Scribner's under the auspices of the American Council of Learned Societies, and since then four supplements have been added. Two other sets— Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Biography and the National Cyclopaedia of American Biography— must be used with care. Apple-ton's includes portraits and facsimiles of autographs but also a number of imaginary subjects (see Margaret C. Schindler, "Fictitious Biography,"

Introduction
Thousands of sources in the Library and on the Internet may contain biographical information. This guide provides citations or links to many of them. By using some recommended search strategies on DELCAT you should be able to ferret out additional sources not listed here. Determining the appropriate biographical source involves first asking yourself three questions. These are: Depending on your answer to the first question, proceed either to the section in this guide covering biographical sources which are retrospective or general in scope (these include persons of all historical periods, including the present, or those who are dead) or to the section covering sources which are contemporary in scope (these include only living persons). Upon arriving at your jumping-off point, be prepared to ask yourself the second and third questions. Jump to top of page.
