HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCE OF WALES
The Prince of Wales, eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh and heir apparent to the throne, was born at Buckingham Palace on November 14, 1948. Upon the death of his grandfather (George VI) in February 1952, he became heir to the throne as his mother ascended the Throne as Queen Elizabeth II. She did so not only as Queen of the United Kingdom but also, and quite distinctly, as Queen of Canada. It was the first time that a sovereign had been proclaimed separately as "Sovereign of Canada".
His Royal Highness' earlier education was at Cheam School and at Gordonstoun in Scotland. From 1967 to 1970, he studied at Cambridge University and it was during this period that he was formally invested as Prince of Wales (1969). He graduated from Cambridge in 1970 and the same year visited Canada for the first time, spending two days in the nation's capital before joining his parents and sister for a ten-day tour of the country. It was to prove to be the first of many trips that His Royal Highness was to make and the beginning of a very special relationship with the country and its people.
During the 1970s, his military service was extensive and covered a number of service appointments and branches of the armed forces, including the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. It was while serving on

Z Edward VIII of the United Kingdom Biography King Edward VIII , Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David Windsor 1 (23 June 1894 - 28 May 1972) reigned as King of the United Kingdom, Ireland and the other British Dominions, and as Emperor of India from 20 January 1936 until his abdication on 11 December 1936 (although in South Africa he was deemed to have abdicated the previous day, and in the Irish Free State his abdication did not take effect until the following day). He was the last monarch to serve his entire reign as Emperor of India. His official title during his reign was Edward the Eighth, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India. Later, as Duke of Windsor during World War II, he held the office of Governor and Commander-in-Chief of The Bahamas.
No other British monarch has voluntarily relinquished the throne, though several have been "deemed to have abdicated" after fleeing, have suffered execution, or have given up part of their power; see abdication.
The future Edward VIII was born at Richmond, Surrey, the eldest son of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of York. The Duke of York, who later became King George V, was the second son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (the future Edward VII and eldest son of Queen Victoria). The Duchess of York, formerly Her Serene Highness Princess Mary of Teck, was a great-granddaughter of King George III and a first cousin once removed of Queen Victoria. At the time of his birth, the child stood third in line to the British throne behind his father and grandfather.

He was the only British monarch of the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. He also has the distinction of having been heir apparent to the throne longer than anyone in English or British history.
In 1905, Edward officially recognized the office of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He became the first British monarch to visit Russia (1907). Edward also played a role in the modernization of the Home Fleet and the reform of the Army Medical Services, after the Boer War.

As the eldest son of a British Sovereign, he was automatically Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland, from birth. As a son of Prince Albert, he also held the titles of Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Duke of Saxony. Queen Victoria created her son Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester on 8 December,1841.
