  • Born: 24 May 1819 Birthplace: London, England Died: 22 January 1901 (cerebral hemorrhage) Best Known As: Long-running queen of England
Victoria's nearly 64-year reign was the longest in British history. She presided over a period of British industrial progress, artistic successes and political empire-building which became known as the Victorian Era. Victoria was only 18 when she became queen upon the death of her uncle, King William IV. In 1840 she married her first cousin Albert , the German son of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Victoria was shattered by his untimely death at age 42, and she went into a prolonged period of mourning. (She never stopped mourning entirely, wearing black the rest of her life.) Late in the 1860s she re-emerged into public life, and as years passed she became increasingly venerated among her subjects. Victoria celebrated her diamond jubilee 60 years on the throne in 1897. After her death in 1901 she was succeeded by her son Prince Albert, who became King Edward VII took the family name of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, making Victoria the last monarch in the house of Hanover... London's Victoria and Albert Museum is named for the royal couple... In 1842 Victoria became the first monarch to ride in a railway train... The precise length of her reign was 63 years, 216 days... She is the great-grandmother of King

Royal Biographies HRH Charles Prince of Wales HRH The Prince Charles Philip Arthur George was born at Buckingham Palace, London, on the 14th November 1948, the eldest child of HRH The Princess Elizabeth (now HM Queen Elizabeth II) and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. On the death of HM King George VI on 6th February 1952, and the accession to the Throne of the Queen, Prince Charles succeeded to the titles that are borne by the eldest son of the Sovereign. He became Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, Prince and Great Steward of Scotland. Prince Charles was created Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester on 26th July 1958, and ceremonially invested 1st July 1969. As the heir to the Throne, Prince Charles' education was a mixture of the traditional and the innovative. Miss Catherine Peebles was his Governess, from whom he received much of his early education. He later attended Hill House School, Knightsbridge. He became a boarder at Cheam School, Headley, Berkshire, the first heir to the throne, though not the first prince, to attend a boarding school. Prince Charles later went to Gordonstoun School, Morayshire, after which he spent some time as an assistant master at Geelong Church of England Grammar School, Melbourne, Australia. The prince then went to Trinity College, University of Cambridge, where he obtained a degree in anthropology, archaeology and history.

Professor Dame Carol M Black, DBE CBE MD PRCP MACP FMedSci
President, Royal College of Physicians of London
Carol Black first read history at Bristol University followed by a diploma in medical social work. During this year she was President of the Bristol Students Union. She entered medical school as a mature student in Bristol qualifying in 1970. She trained in Bristol with Professor Alan Read, Professor of Medicine and soon found that rheumatology and Connective Tissue Disorders were to become her enduring interest. After Bristol she worked at Taplow with Barbara Ansell, and at the Postgraduate Medical School Hammersmith. Out of her clinical work sprang a research interest in systemic sclerosis, a disorder for which little could then be done. Her unit at the Royal Free Hospital has become the major centre for clinical care and research in Europe and is internationally renowned. In 2002 Dame Carol was awarded the CBE for her work in this field and in 2005 she was awarded the DBE for her services to Medicine. Dame Carol has lectured extensively abroad and has had particularly fruitful clinical and research collaborations with American colleagues. Dame Carol is a Master of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of 15 other Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties, and has been awarded an Honorary DSc from the University of Bristol and an Honorary MD from the University of Nottingham. She is a Fellow of University College London, Lucy Cavendish College of the University of Cambridge and a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute.
