Army 1940-45
Julian Clint was one of thousands of Australians who enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in May 1940, spurred on by the invasion of France that month. Before this he was an 18-year-old clerk living in the Sydney suburb of Seven Hills. Julian was posted to the 2/17th Battalion, formed at Ingleburn and made up of mainly New South Welshmen. After initial training, the battalion sailed from Sydney in October and five weeks later reached Egypt, completing their training in Palestine. After recuperating in a base hospital, Julian returned to his unit, which had now left Tobruk. The 9th Division was rested and rebuilt in Syria and, over several months in the second half of 1942, fought the Germans and Italians in Egypt. In July, Australian troops captured important high ground around Tel el Eisa, on the northern flank of the El Alamein battle area. The Germans tried several times to recapture this key ground. In late October, at El Alamein, the 2/17th was one of the battalions responsible for the position known as Trig 29 and withstood repeated enemy attacks until the Allied counter-attack was launched. This proved to be a turning point in the war in North Africa.

Persecuted Writers Receive Awards: Nine Journalists and Authors from the Middle East and North Africa Awarded Hellman/Hammett grants (New York, July 20, 2005) - Writers and journalists from Iran , Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and other countries have been awarded Hellman/Hammett grants in recognition of their courage in the face of political persecution. Twenty-seven writers around the world received Hellman/Hammett awards this year. The Middle East and North African recipients include: Assurbanipal Babilla (Iran), playwright and painter Omid Memarian (Iran), journalist and Internet writer Sina Mottalebi (Iran), journalist and Internet writer Taqi Rahmani (Iran), author of 26 books and monographs Ali Lmrabet (Morocco), journalist and newspaper editor Maha Hassan (Syria), novelist and essayist Abdallah Zouari (Tunisia), writer and high school teacher The other Middle East and North African recipients asked to remain anonymous because of possible continuing danger to them and their families. Hellman/Hammett grants are given annually to writers around the world who have been targets of political persecution. The grant program began in 1989 when the American playwright Lillian Hellman willed that her estate be used to assist writers in financial need as a result of expressing their views. Ms. Hellman was prompted by her experiences during the anti-communist hysteria of the 1950s, when she and her long-time companion the writer Dashiell Hammett, were questioned by U.S. Congressional committees about their political beliefs and affiliations.

Sir Alan Gordon Cunningham
Profession: Soldier Born: Died:
Sir Alan Cunningham was educated at Cheltenham College and then the Royal Military Academy after he joined the Royal Artillery in 1906. He served with the Royal Horse Artillery during The Great War being awarded an MC in 1915 and DSO in 1918. After the war he served in the Straits Settlements for two years. He then returned to Britain. In 1937 he became the commander of the 1st Division of Royal Artillery and then the commander of the relatively new Anti-Aircraft division. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was sent to command the troops in East Africa. He led the campaign to take Somaliland and Addis Ababa from the Italians. He achieved this in a very short period of time and took over 50,000 prisoners for the loss of only 500 of his own men. This success meant that he was trusted with command of the 8th Army in North Africa. Unfortunately, he was outfought by Rommel and was dismissed by Auchinleck. He was transferred to the Staff College and Northern Ireland before returning to the Middle East as High Commissioner of Palestine from 1945 to 1948. He continued to have a role as the Colonel Commandant of the Royal Artillery until 1954. He died in 1983.

Gamal Abdel Nasser
Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt was born in 1918 and died in 1970. Nasser was a pivotal figure in the recent history of the Middle East and played a highly prominent role in the 1956 Suez Crisis . Nasser has been described as the first leader of an Arab nation who challenged what was perceived as the western dominance of the Middle East. Nasser remains a highly revered figure in both Egypt and the Arab world. Nasser was born in Alexandria in January 1918. At the age of fifteen, he took part in anti-British demonstrations. Those who protested also targeted some in the royal family who it was believed tacitly supported the power Britain still maintained over Egypt by its joint-ownership of the Suez Canal . It was felt by some that the Royal Family was willing to accept this as long as no attempt was made by the British to weaken the family's power within Egypt itself. In 1935, Nasser was wounded in the head by the British during an anti-British demonstration. In 1938, Nasser graduated from the Royal Military Academy and joined the Egyptian Army. Within the army, Nasser continued with his anti-British activities. In 1942, an incident occurred which is said to have been the key turning point in Nasser's activities. In February 1942, the British persuaded/forced the king of Egypt, King Farouq, to accept a government that was to be headed by Nahas Pasha. At this time, Britain's power in North Africa was reaching a peak with the defeat of the Afrika Korps and this power was especially felt in Egypt. Nasser was appalled by what he considered to be the interference in the internal affairs of one country by a colonial European power. For the next seven years, he used his influence to persuade officers in the Egyptian Army that a) such interference was unacceptable and b) that all vestiges of British rule/influence had to be removed from Egypt. During this time, Nasser was stationed as an instructor in the Egyptian Army Staff College. This gave him direct access to young officers who might be more prone to his views when compared to the older officers in the Egyptian Army.

Bishop of Essex Abbot of Lastingham Born: c. AD 620 in Northumberland Died: 26th October AD 664 at Lastingham, Yorkshire North Riding In AD 653, the mighty armies of King Penda of Mercia expanded their monarch's influence to the control of Middle Anglia (Leicestershire and parts of Lincoln and Derby), where his son Peada was appointed King. Soon afterward, the young king visited his neighbour, King Oswiu of Northumbria, at Walton (or Atwell or Wattbottle) and, as his new kingdom had already been considerably influenced by East Anglian Christianity, Peada agreed to be baptised in return for the hand of Oswiu's daughter, Alchflaed. Bishop Finan of Lindisfarne therefore welcomed the King and a number of his nobles into the Christian faith and Oswiu provided him with four priests to instruct his people further. One of these was St. Cedd. Within a year, Cedd returned home, having helped to convert much of Middle Anglia to Christianity. He travelled to Lindisfarne to confer with Bishop Finan, who promptly sent this impress young missionary out once more to evangelise the people of Essex, who were sorely in need of some spiritual guidance. King Oswiu, having imposed his overlordship there, had persuaded King Sigeberht Sanctus to adopt Christianity, in a general mobilization against Penda of Mercia. Cedd thus turned south again to spread the word of God amongst the East Saxons. He baptised many of the locals and built several churches - possibly Prittlewell and West Mersea amongst them - and is particularly noted for the foundation of monasteries at Ythanchester (Bradwell-on-Sea) and Tilaburg (East Tilbury).
