... BAROQUE COMPOSERS' PORTRAIT GALLERY BAROQUE MUSIC: historical and geographical context. Given the difficulties of travel and communication two centuries ago, it might easily be assumed that composers would know relatively little of other composers and other countries. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Travel by stage-coach may have been lengthy, and probably only for the well-to-do. But the many post-coach monuments still to be found in Germany, with their journey timings between towns precise down to one-eighth of an hour attest to the high degree of organization and reliability in this mode of travel. Music-making was highly prized by many of the princely and kingly courts, and leading musicians would often be financed for their journeys to bring back the latest styles and compositions. During the first half of the 1700s, German music adopted the Italian forms of the concerto and sonata, and with them, much of the Italian baroque "vocabulary" together with the latest Italian compositions. ITALY Many eminent composers of the baroque period, notably Handel for example, sojourned in Rome, and Corelli's influence was to spread itself throughout Europe. Rome was of course also featured on the Grand Tour, which the wealthy of Europe and especially England were enjoying in increasing numbers during the 1700s.

Prehistory
The Romans Age of Arthur AngloSaxons ... 20th Century
Princess Louise
by Brenda Ralph Lewis
It is nothing unusual these days for British royals to marry outside their own blue-blooded ranks. In the 19th century, though, the story was very different, which is why the marriage of Princess Louise, fourth daughter and sixth child of Queen Victoria to John Douglas Sutherland Campbell, Marquis of Lorne and heir to the dukedom of Argyll created such a stir when it took place in 1871. The Royal Family were outraged, but Victoria pulled rank on all of them, and made it known that if the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and all her possessions beyond the seas thought the Marquis was right for Louise, who else had anything to say about it' It was not surprising that Louise made a 'different' marriage. She was a 'different' princess, not overfond of royal ritual or the rather stuffy royal social round, and was clearly made for life beyond the limitations which her birth had imposed on her. She was born at Buckingham Palace on 18 March 1848, a lively, talented and intelligent child who, from the first, was clearly destined to grow into a beauty. She was later accounted the loveliest of Victoria's daughters, and the others were no mean lookers, either.

born c.1485 in Putney
executed 28 July 1540 in London "A good household manager, but not fit to meddle in the affairs of kings."
May 1538, Henry VIII describes Cromwell to the French ambassador Thomas Cromwell was as great a statesman as England has ever seen and, in his decade of power, permanently changed the course of English history. Unlike his mentor, Cardinal Wolsey, Cromwell was not a priest or a papist. He was a lawyer determined to impose his own character - methodical, detached, and calculating - upon government. Cromwell wanted government to be effective and efficient; to achieve this, he had to end the chaos of feudal privilege and ill-defined jurisdictions. He was blessed with a logical mind in an age sadly devoid of them. And unlike his royal master, he did not let his emotions interfere with his position. He was the ideal statesman for Tudor England and, just months after his execution in 1540, Henry VIII was bemoaning his loss. Cromwell was introduced to government service as a secretary for Cardinal Wolsey There were striking similarities between the two men - both managed to remain favorites of the mercurial Henry VIII for years; both were despised by the older nobility who coveted their influence with the king; both sought to reform the creaky medieval bureaucracy of Tudor government; both were highly intelligent and well-versed in international affairs. And both, ultimately, fell from Henry's favor with spectacular speed. In the end, the king preferred to listen to the old nobility.

bio Kylie Minogue is a phenomenon of truly international proportions. To date she has released seven albums, five long-play videos, in addition to the Greatest Hits double album and video package, live album and video and 34 singles throughout the world, all of which have been hits. In June of 1991, after the release of her 13th hit single, entitled Shocked, the British industry "bible" Music Week magazine declared that Kylie was the ONLY act in the history of the British pop music to have their first 13 releases all go Top 10. Kylie now has 30 consecutive U.K. hits, none of which failed to peak in the Top 20, 20 in the Top 10! Today Kylie is one of the world's most successful female music artists, but she wasn't always known as a singer. Kylie started her career at age eleven when asked to act in the national Australian T.V. drama series Skyways, this was followed by more Australian television roles in the popular drama The Sullivans and later The Henderson Kids. After her seventeenth birthday Kylie left school to take up acting as a full time profession. Her character "Charlene" in the Australian "soap" Neighbours is still today, arguably one of the most popular characters ever to come out of Australian television.

Ely Episcopal Theologians in the Seventeenth Century
The Rt. Revd Dr. Kenneth Stevenson, Bishop of Portsmouth
2 Lancelot Andrewes
The name of Andrewes has been immortalised by ecclesiastical outfitters through the floppy ancestor of the mortar-board which is called the Bishop Andrewes Cap First, as preacher. At the beginning of the following reign, Charles I entrusted to William Laud, then bishop of London, and John Buckeridge , then bishop of Rochester, the task of editing a collection of his sermons, the majority of which had been preached at court before King James at the major festivals. Whatever the precise character of their editorial work (and Marianne Dorman's recent Bristol PhD suggests that there may have been some theological censorship in the process), the famous 96 Sermons first published in 1629 were reprinted several times, and were read and re-read as the century progressed. Sermons, however, do not usually bear imitation, and the diarist John Evelyn notes on 4th April 1679 that the Bishop of Gloucester, John Pritchett, preached Andrewes-style with many sub-divisions, and 'with much quickness', in a manner by then out of date. But they were used for other purposes. If you look closely at the 1619 Christmas sermon on Lk 2;14 and compare it with Hark. The herald angels sing

During hard times, she helped support her family with the game she caught. Her career as a sharpshooter started at age 17 when she defeated the noted marksman, Frank E. Butler at a competition in Cincinnati, Ohio. The two eventually married and travel with the Buffalo Bill Show for 17 years (1885 - 1902). Oakley performed throughout the United States and Europe. She captivated the royalty of Europe. Queen Victoria was quite impressed with her. And on one famous occasion the crown prince of Germany encouraged her to shoot a cigarette from his mouth. At 30 paces, she could slice a playing card held edgewise. She could shoot holes through coins at a smiliar distance. It was even said she could "scramble eggs in midair." At the height of her career, she was one of the most famous cultural icons in the United States. A railroad accident in 1901 partially paralyzed her, but she continued to tour regularly until her death.
