4000 years of women in science
This Web site is dedicated to providing information about the role of women in science over the last 4000 years, with the emphasis on pre-20th century women scientists. The main feature of the site is a number of brief biographies of women scientists: these may be browsed alphabetically by name, field of study and by time period. The fields of health and medicine are reasonably well represented. There is also a small selection of portraits of women scientists such as Ada Byron Lovelace and a bibliography of references used to compile the biographies. Women History, Modern 1601- History, Medieval History, Ancient ... A guide to R. A. Fisher This Web site was created by John Aldrich of the University of Southampton, and eulogises the work of Sir Ronald Fisher F.R.S. (1890-1962), who the author of this site calls "one of the leading scientists of the 20th century". The site has three main sections. The first presents a biographical sketch of R.A. Fisher's working life. The second section presents abstracts and bibliographical references to R.A. Fisher's writings, including books, articles and some of his more accessible, non-technical works on aspects of eugenics, evolution and statistics. The third section presents writing about Fisher, including obituaries and memorials, encylopaedia entries, references to Fisher in historical material and textbooks, plus memoirs and related writings by his contemporaries. There is also a list of Fisher Memorial Lectures in the UK, USA, and Australia. Links to full-text material is provided where possible.

Biography Society for Endocrinology Asia and Oceania Medal Lecture Abstract Peter Leedman graduated in Medicine at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 1981, then moved to Melbourne for specialist training in Endocrinology in 1988. He completed PhD studies at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) with Len Harrison in Melbourne in 1991 and a then post-doc at Harvard Medical School with Bill Chin. He returned to Australia in 1994 to take up an academic position at the UWA based at Royal Perth Hospital. Since then, he has been recognized internationally for his work on hormone action, with particular expertise in understanding the mechanisms regulating expression (especially RNA biology and RNA-protein interactions) of key targets for therapeutics in hormone-dependent cancer (breast and prostate). He has made important contributions to understanding the regulation of androgen receptor, growth factor receptor and p21 gene expression, and identified novel functionally relevant RNA-binding proteins for each target, which are currently the focus of structural studies to direct small molecule development. More recently, the discovery of several novel RNA coactivator-binding proteins that modulate estrogen and androgen action at the transcriptional level, has provided a range of new potential therapeutic targets. He has received several awards, including the Merck Senior Fellow award from the US Endocrine Society. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Molecular Endocrinology and is Deputy Director of the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR) in Perth.

    A short biography
Carl Linnaeus was born 13 May 1707 to Nils Ingemarsson Linnaeus and Christina Linnaea. His father was a man of the cloth in the diocese of Växjö in the Swedish province of Småland. Although his parents wanted Carl to follow in his fathers footsteps, it was probably his fathers knowledge of gardening that awakened Carls' interest in botany. At school, he was not known as an academic and it was suggested that he should take up a trade.
Joh. Rothman saved the day when he offered to help Carl with his studies. At some stage, Carl persuaded his father that the church was not for him and he was allowed to study medicine. When his mother found out, she was greatly saddened.
Carls school report was hardly encouraging but with the help of Gabriel Höök, he was able to enrol at the Academy in Lund where he stayed for one year. In Lund, he met professor and medical doctor Kilian Stobaeus, with whom he boarded and studied. Carl now moved to Uppsala where he was further encouraged by professors Lars Roberg and Olof Rudbeck. Unfortunately, Carls' father was now unable to support him. Whilst in Uppsala, Carl Linnaeus met and eventually married Sara Lisa Moraea with whom he had seven children.
