Search African History Kente Kente is a brightly coloured, banded material and is the most widely known cloth produced in Africa. Although it is now identified solely with the Asante of Ghana, the term originates from the neighbouring Fante.

Kente cloth is made from thin strips woven (typically by men) on narrow looms. The strips are interlaced to form a fabric which is usually worn wrapped around the shoulders and waist like a toga – the garment is also known as kente. Women wear two shorter lengths to form a skirt and bodice. Originally made from white cotton with some indigo patterning, kente cloth evolved when silk arrived with Portuguese traders in the seventeenth century. Fabric samples were pulled apart for the silken thread, which was then woven into the kente cloth. Later, when skeins of silk became available, more sophisticated patters were created – although the extortionate cost of the silk meant they were only available to Akan royalty. In kente cloth colours are significant:
Even today, when a new design is created , it must first be offered to the royal house. If the king declines to take it can then be sold to the public. Designs worn by Asante royalty may not be worn by others.

The Unofficial British Royal Family Pages

While it’s nice to see modern royal women stepping out from time to time in a beautiful tiara, bejeweled Family Order and parure of important jewels, it’s abundantly clear that the good old days of truly embellished and decorative royal women are forever gone. I realize it may not be considered politically correct to say this, but I long for the time when royal women were covered from head to toe in the world’s greatest jewels. In particular, the era of those two grand queen consorts of Britain’s Imperial age, Mary and Alexandra. Not only did these two women exemplify the ideal appearance of a queen, it’s impossible to read any history of Queen Elizabeth II’s royal jewel collection without recognizing that it owes much of its current splendor to them. Of course, this in no way undermines the contributions of other historical British queens and queen consorts. To be sure, when Queen Victoria died in 1901, she left to the Crown both historically important jewels that had belonged to previous British monarchs and consorts and valuable newer pieces, including three of my personal favorites – the dazzling 161 carat diamond collet necklace and matching earrings she had made in 1858 and the King George IV State Diadem ( worn by Queen Alexandra in photo at right ) that she had permanently set with diamonds and pearls in 1838. (Queen Victoria wore each of these three pieces, by the way, in the famous 1859 Winterhalter painting, which can be seen at

Orders and Decorations - History

This page briefly explains the history of individual orders and decorations used throughout the British Empire and Commonwealth, along with links to remote sites. Note: This is not a comprehensive list, but rather reflects the most important awards, and those most likely to occur as initialisms appended to the names of military officers. The post-World War 2 era saw the gradual nationalisation of honours and awards systems. Flag icons below serve as a visual clue of nationality. The United Kingdom flag should be understood to also cover the Empire and Commonwealth. The arrangement of this page is roughly alphabetical, but filing elements are not necessarily the first word. In some cases a filing elements has been chosen to group related orders and decorations, or for its best known abbreviated form. (If in doubt, use the "find" function in your browser.) Ranking ahead of the Knights of the Orders listed below are several ranks of the peerage: 1. Duke, 2. Marquess (Marquis), 3. Earl, 4. Viscount, 5. Baron.

Central Library Beginning African American Genealogy: Finding Your Roots
In his historical novel, "Roots," Alex Haley used both oral history and recorded documentation to tell a compelling story about his family. Some parts of the story had been passed down from generation to generation by members in his family and this led him to look for authenticating information in libraries, archives and for other supportive documents in local, county, and state records. Beginning African American Genealogy will stress the importance of using such an approach, with the inclusion of oral history tradition in the African American community. Tracing one’s roots can be relatively simple or quite involved. It can cost a few dollars or thousands, and it can be a momentary pastime or a lifelong hobby. Patient, disciplined research can be quite rewarding even though it may never lead to discovery of direct African lineage but rather a deeper appreciation of ones American roots. And this, perhaps, may have been the most important of Alex Haley’s achievements.
