Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
  • Full Name: Philip Mountbatten (or Schleiswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg)
  • Titles: Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, Baron Greenwich
  • Honors: Knight of the Thistle; Order of Merit; The Queen declared he had 'place, pre-eminence and precedence' next to herself; she also granted to The Duke the style and dignity of a Prince of the United Kingdom.
The Duke of Edinburgh was born Prince of Greece and Denmark in Corfu, June 10, 1921. He was the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece, with four older sisters. The paternal side of his family is of Danish descent - Philip's father, Prince Andrew, was the grandson of King Christian IX of Denmark (father of Edward VII's wife, Queen Alexandra). His Danish descent is quite the historical one: the Glucksburgs provided Danish kings in an unbroken male line for a dozen generations, dating back to "Gorm the Old" a thousand years before. His mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg, a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Prince Philip adopted his mother's family name of Mountbatten (the Anglicized Battenberg) when he became a naturalized British subject and renounced his Greek title.

My favourite royal in history:
Eleanor of Aquitaine (~1122-1204)
Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine was an intelligent and emancipated woman living in the dark middle ages. Although it is a conventional rule that all ladies of high rank should be described as beautiful, all sources agree that Eleanor of Aquitaine really was beautiful. In addition, she was the richest heiress of France and became successively Queen of France and England.
her daughter Aenor married to his eldest son William X (1099-1137) in 1121. They had two daughters, Eleanor and Petronilla, and a son, William Aigret. Eleanor resembled both William IX and Dangereuse; she possessed the same intelligence, gaiety, restlessness and will power. The court of William IX was the centre of western European culture: the ducal family was entertained by jongleurs, storytellers and troubadours. Unlike most of her contemporaries, male and especially female, Eleanor was carefully educated and she was an excellent student. Eleanor's happy childhood ended with the subsequent deaths of her mother, her little brother and - in 1137 - her father.
The orphaned Eleanor was the richest heiress in France thus a marriage was arranged for her to its King, Louis VII (1121-1180). Louis had been brought up for an office in the church, but he had become heir to the French throne after the death of his elder brother. He was a weak, dull, grave and pious man and he and the lively Eleanor were ill matched. Louis never understood his young wife, but he appears to have adored her with a passionate admiration. It wasn't until 1145 that a daughter, Marie, was born. Meanwhile, Eleanor was eager to govern her own duchy, since she knew the troublesome Aquitainians better than anyone. However, Louis' councillor, the Abbot Sugar, resented female influence in governmental matters.

Philip II, King of Spain 1556-1598, (1527-1598)

All three inflicted death and destruction upon numerous peoples and nations. Also like Bonaparte and Hitler, Philip II was a driven and complex personality. It was political unrest and pressure in Spain which had forced Emperor Charles V, first: to marry his first cousin, Princess Isabella of Portugal; and secondly, to have his children brought up in Spain. And there, on 21 May 1527, in Valladolid, Philip II was born in the presence of his father and leading nobles. In his youth Philip II saw very little of his father who, from 1529 to 1533, was in Italy and Germany. In 1535-1536 his father went to conquer Tunis, and 1539-1541 was spent in The Netherlands. Leaving Spain in May 1543, Charles V was forced to remain in Northern Europe until 1556. As his mother had died in 1539, it was mainly courtiers and tutors who prepared him for his future role on the European stage. Cristobal Calvete de Estrella taught him Latin and Greek; Honorato Juan, mathematics and architecture; Juan Gines de Sepulveda, geography and history. No-one was appointed for languages and, even though in time he understood French, Italian and Portuguese, he could not speak these languages. Political education was controlled by his father through correspondence.

Excerpt from Motion Picture Biographies by John W. Cones Hollywood Biopics - Concluding Observations Analysis of this body of films, the Hollywood biopics, considers the geographic setting for such films, the occupations portrayed, time and sex biases, ideology, historical accuracy and the race, culture and ethnicity of the biopic subjects. In some instances, the conclusions of the author of the earlier work in this area (George Custin's Bio/Pics) are compared with those of the more contemporary study. In other instances, this later study places an emphasis on different issues which are critical in gaining an understanding of the Hollywood-based U.S. film industry. GeographyAs Custen points out, "[i]n their projection of biography onto a world map, Hollywood created a distorted view of accomplishment that sustained an image of history that . . . made it appear that entire domains of achievement had been invented by Americans . . . " Custen's study of biopics, which only surveyed the genre through the middle of the century, reveals that "[t]wo-thirds of all biopics are either about Americans or set in America . . . " and "[a]fter the United States, Europe appears to be the center of the biographical universe, with 22 percent of films set there." As Custen pointed out for his study, if " . . . the American and European totals (are combined) . . . 89 percent of all famous people are either American or European . . . Asia and Africa account for only 3 percent of all biopics (in Custen's study) . . . "

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother was born on August 4, 1900. The former Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon is descended from the royal house of Scotland; one of her ancestors in the 14th century became the Thane of Glamis. Lady Elizabeth spent the majority of her childhood at St. Paul's Waldenbury in Hertfordshire, where she was educated at home. Her brother, Fergus, was killed in 1915 while in service during WWI, and it sparked her interest in volunteer work.
Lady Elizabeth and her family grew up with the British Royal family. She was even a bridesmaid at the wedding of Princess Mary. As expected by many in the royal circle, she soon announced her engagement to future King George VI, then the Duke of York. They married on April 26, 1923 in Westminster Abbey. Seldom has a royal marriage proven to be as successful as the Yorks'. The Duchess of York was well loved by the people, who embraced her with open arms. The Duke and Duchess had two children: Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926, and Margaret Rose was born on August 21, 1930.
When Edward VIII announced his abdication, the world was stunned. George VI took the throne not as Albert I, as he would have been styled, but as George VI in order to ensue the continuity of the monarchy in the eyes of the people. During World War II, the king and queen made many important state visits. Many people tried to suggest to the queen that the princesses be sent to America for their safety and she refused. When Buckingham Palace was terribly bombed in 1940, the queen and the princesses were there, and experienced first-hand the devastation of war. The queen's actions during the war only further endeared her to her subjects. She refused to leave London without the king, and would not even send her children out of the country to Canada, as other Royals around the world had done. Queen Elizabeth insisted on sticking by her country and her family.

[Footnote 1: Now Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd.] CHAPTER III. A few days after the arrival of the Lark at the island of Goree, accompanied by a party of the officers of that ship, I made an excursion upon the main land: we set out from the ship early in the morning, for Decar, the capital of a chief or king, named Marraboo: we arrived before he had moved abroad, and, after going through winding narrow paths or streets, we were conducted by one of his people to his palace, a wretched hovel, built with mud, and thatched with bamboo. In our way to this miserable habitation of royalty, a confused sound of voices issued forth from almost every hut we passed, which originated from their inhabitants vociferating their morning orisons to Allah and Mahomet; their religion being an heterogeneous system of Mahomedanism, associated with superstitious idolatry, incantations, and charms.
