Armstrong I was born near Lexington, Virginia. I am an American author and educator. I became famous for my novel Sounder Through Troubled Waters (1957), is an account of my experiences as a single parent with three children. My other books include Sour Land (1971), and The Education of Abraham Lincoln Bill Brittain I was born December 16,1930. I was born in Spencerport, New York. I went to Brockport State Teachers'college. My wife's name is Ginny. We have two children, Susan and James. We currently live in Freeport, Long Island. The Wish Giver is my only Newbery winner. My other popular books include Donkey and All the Money in the World. Beverly Cleary I was born in April 12, 1916 in McMinnville Oregon. I went to college at University of California at Berkley. I am married to Clarence Cleary. I have two children: Marianne Elizabeth and Malcolm James. Elizabeth Coatsworth I was born on May 31, 1893 in Buffalo, New York. In 1929 I married Henry Beston, an author. I have two daughters, Margaret and Catherine. I received the Newbery Award in 1931. Since then the book has been reprinted 24 times.

    Auchincloss, Louis
    Auchincloss was a practicing lawyer (New York City). He became a successful writer of fiction, including: Tales of Manhattan I Come as a Thief The Partners (1974), and The Winthrop Covenant (1976). He wrote non-fiction too, including: Life, Law and Letters , in which Auchincloss makes reference to Holmes, Cardozo, Jane Austen, Astor, Vanderbilt, Dreiser, Lytton Strachey, Saint-Simon, Thackeray (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1979); and A Writer's Capital (University of Minnesota Press, 1974).

    Who Died Between 1897 and 1947 Transcribed from the American Art Annual by Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., Director, Maine Historic Preservation Commission.
    Between 1897 and 1947 the American Art Annual and its successor volume Who's Who in American Art included brief obituaries of prominent American artists, sculptors, and architects. During this fifty-year period, the lives of more than twelve-hundred architects were summarized in anywhere from a few lines to several paragraphs.
    Recognizing the reference value of this information, I have carefully made verbatim transcriptions of these biographical notices, substituting full wording for abbreviations to provide for easier reading. After each entry, I have cited the volume in which the notice appeared and its date.
    The word "photo" after an architect's name indicates that a picture and copy negative of that individual is on file at the Maine Historic Preservation Commission. While the Art Annual and Who's Who contain few photographs of the architects, the Commission has gathered these from many sources and is pleased to make them available to researchers.
