121. Ecology And Biodiversity: The Ecological Effects Of Roads
how roads harm habitats remains the definitive summary of their effects on biological diversity.

The Ecological Effects of Roads
By Reed Noss, PhD The following article previously appeared two years ago in "Killing Roads" under the name "Diamondback". It remains the definitive summary of the effects of roads on biological diversity. An extensive bibliography was prepared for the piece and is available from PAW NET (PAW NET, 117 Main St., Brattleboro, VT 05301, 802-257-4878) for $3.00. It is an indispensable tool for activists. [but see note at end]
This article will review some ecological effects of roads, with emphasis on impacts to wildlife (broadly defined). My concern is with all roads, from primitive logging roads to four-lane highways. Although the effects of different types of roads vary, virtually all are bad, and the net effect of all roads is nothing short of catastrophic. The technical literature that pertains to this topic is vast, and an entire book would be needed to summarise it adequately. Consider this only an introduction, or an "executive summary" of a massive tragedy. Direct effects, such as flattened fauna, are easy to see. In contrast, many indirect effects of roads are cumulative and involve changes in community structure and ecological processes that are not well understood. Yet, these long-term effects signal a deterioration in ecosystems that far surpasses in importance the visual and olfactory insult to us of a bloated deer by the roadside.

This definition is so broad it could encompass just about any aspect of biology. Biodiversity, however, is generally recognized as having three important components: Species Diversity - The numbers and relative abundances of species in a defined region. Habitats or Ecosystems - The range, composition, and species diversity of different plant and animal communities. Genetic Diversity - The genetic variability of individual species. Nearctica are also found under biogeography.

VENTER INSTITUTE TO SEQUENCE MORE THAN 100 KEY MARINE MICROBES IN ONE YEAR
Data To Help Scientists Study Biodiversity, Ecology, Evolution, and Health (February 24, 2005) ROCKVILLE, MD The J. Craig Venter Institute will sequence the genomes of more than 100 of the key marine microbes stored in culture collections around the world. Analyzing these genomes will help scientists understand the chemical transformations that occur within the major biogeochemical cycles vital to life. The data will also provide a baseline for interpreting the millions of new genes being discovered by the Sorcerer II Expedition ( Sorcerer2expedition.org ), also led by the Venter Institute. The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation will announce today the sequence completion of the project's first organism, Erythrobacter litoralis at the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography's annual meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. This organism belongs to a class of bacteria that is abundant in the ocean, but whose function is little understood. The bacterium was found in the Sargasso Sea by Stephen Giovannoni of Oregon State University. The Venter Institute received an $8.9 million grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to support a vastly expanded reference collection of genomic analyses of marine microbes. The microbes that the Venter Institute is sequencing have all been isolated from the world's oceans and then grown in the laboratories of the many collaborating researchers. Data about their genetic make-up will help scientists understand the functions that microbes play in the ecology of the oceans.

Biodiversity and Ecological Processes Research Group
This new research Group brings together members of the School whose main interests are the study of ecological and evolutionary processes in animals, plants and microbes. Our aim is to understand the ecological and genetic consequences of environmental change on local and global biodiversity at the individual, population and community level. Environmental change can have profound effects on biodiversity over both the short and long term. In our rapidly changing world, short term stress caused by human mediated habitat loss, pollution and climate change pose a special challenge to today's biologists. In Cardiff our approach is to focus on processes and prediction, combining ecological and molecular approaches, and we seek to unify these themes from contrasting groups of organisms. Longer term change relates to fundamental evolutionary processes, including ongoing adaptation and species diversification. These result in subtle changes to ecosystem structure and function over time. We examine these processes with a view to understanding, conserving and managing the resulting diversity.

Biodiversity Loss : Economic and Ecological Issues
by Charles Perrings (Editor), Karl-Goran Maler (Editor), Carl Folke (Editor). The book reports the findings of a research program that brought together economists and ecologists to consider the causes and consequences of biodiversity loss. It shows that while the immediate causes of biodiversity loss lie in habitat destruction and harvesting, the underlying causes are incentives which encourage resource users to ignore the effects of their actions. These effects include both loss of genetic material, and the collapse of ecosystem resilience. The 'solutions' are argued to lie in the reform of incentives. Click here to learn more about this book
