Ok so i had to buy this book and read most of it for my first year marine biology degree, as a newcomer to the subject i found it very informative and interesting, it did however lack in a few areas, but as a basic text for me it was very useful Related Categories:

We have put together a select team of scientists representing the disciplines of computer science, strutural biology, molecular biology, genetics, plant virology, botany, and ecology for a coordinated effort to address the above opportunity. These investigators are from four of the major research institutions of the state: Oklahoma State University, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center, and the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation. Hiring of additional investigators with EPSCoR funding will place an additional team member at the University of Tulsa. Team members are:
  • Ulrich Melcher

Science Drive 4 Visitors may park at Carpark 10 View the map Host: Navjot S. Sodhi About the Talk In many tropical areas, secondary forests are increasing in areas while old-growth forests diminish. Detailed studies of tree and seedling dynamics in four young second-growth forests over eight years have revealed large changes in population sizes with conservative change in species richness and species composition. Successional changes in tree density, size distribution, and basal area are driven by high mortality of shade-intolerant species, recruitment of shade-tolerant species and growth forms, and decreasing diameter growth rates. About the Speaker Robin Chazdon is a professor at the University of Conneticut whose interests include the ecophysiology and conservation of tropical forests. She has worked in Costa Rica for nearly 30 years, studying the forests at the La Selva field station. Currently her research focuses on the dynamics of secondary forests, with a view to their regrowth and restoration. She has served on editorial boards of several journals and is currently the Managing Editor of BIOTROPICA, the Journal of Tropical Biology and Conservation. She has published over 50 scientific peer-reviewed papers and edited two books. She was recognized for her work in 2003, when she received the PresidentÕs Medal from the British Ecological Society, awarded for "high achievement in the field of ecology".

RESEARCH THEME 4: SEAGRASS AND REEF FLAT BIODIVERSITY, ECOLOGY AND EXPLOITATION Back to themed research programme Back to Wakatobi National Park index 4.1 Seagrass and reef flat monitoring programme The total fish and large invertebrates gathered by local communities from the reef flat and sea grass areas of the Kaledupa Stakeholder Area appears to be much greater than that from the reef walls. Yet most marine research in the Wakatobi National Park has so far concentrated on the reef walls. In 2004 an annual seagrass and reef flat monitoring programme utilising general volunteers will be launched to assess the standing crop of exploited fish and large invertebrates utilising these habitats and their use as fish nurseries. 4.2 Ecology of seagrass and reef flat organisms Gaining an understanding of the ecology of major components of the fauna of these ecosystems is an important step in obtaining the data needed to effectively manage this habitat. This research activity consists of a series of dissertation studies covering topics such as thermal and saline tolerance of rock pool fish species, the role of coral bombies in affecting distribution of organisms, diurnal use of the intertidal areas by fish and shrimps etc. Many of the experimental designs utilise the No Take area of reef flat as a comparative site to other exploited areas of reef flat.

This research cluster is developed around a group of researchers who are focussed on understanding the diversity and dynamics of the native biota of Australia. Although different researchers focus on different organisms, there is a common thread in their research in developing an understanding of Australian species that live or have lived in the Australian environment Our work includes investigation of the basic ecology, behaviour and evolution of a diverse range of species in the Australian biota. We are involved in biodiversity surveys of natural and disturbed habitats, conservation ecology and ecosystem management, and the interpretation of past and present ecosystems for the development of ecotourism. E cological topics are listed under three headings: 1) Ecology, 2) Conservation Biology, and 3) Botany and Systematics. Links to home pages of botanical and ecological societies are provided in the Journals and Societies List. The Ecological Software List offers links to sites describing software applications for analyzing or organizing ecological data. The Natural Resource Agencies List provides links to home pages of government agencies that conduct ecological research or that are responsible for the management of various ecosystems. The Natural Areas and Reserves heading lists links to sites that feature information about natural areas, LTER sites, national parks, and wilderness areas. The Environment List refers to sites dealing with ecosytem conditions and the Environmental Societies List is a catalog of links to home pages of environmental organizations. R esources included here will be of interest to botanists, plant ecologists, conservation biologists, resource managers, and to students at the university or high school levels. In addition, many of these web sites may be useful to those wishing to learn more about local or global environments. In a time when humans are increasingly influencing and integrated with the ecosystems in which we live, it is important for all of us to be literate in basic ecological concepts and aware of environmental issues.
