This title tackles the critical issue for humanity in the 21st century - our evermore menacing impact on the environment. This two-volume, illustrated set, begins with biodiversity, the complex planetary web of life that has emerged through three billion years of evolution. How does it work? And why is its continued health critical to the planet and to ourselves? It also features an A-Z survey which explores the myriad ways humanity is diminishing that biodiversity, from industrialization to natural habitat destruction, from overpopulation in the developing world to an unsustainable consumer lifestyle in the West.DA(01): DA Information Services Pty Ltd

Second International Congress of the Biodiversity, Ecology and Conservation of the Balcan Fauna – BIOECCO 2 , 1998, Sept 16–20, Ohrid, Macedonia; pp 85. THE PESHTERSKO-SJENICHKY ECOTYPE OF THE HONEY BEE NEEDS A BIOLOGICAL PROTECTION Department of Biology, Faculty of veterinary medicine, University of Belgrade Biometrical, cytogenetic, physiological and zoogeographical research on the honey bee ( Apis mellifica ), from geographically defined localities of the Peshter-Sjenichky a region, was conducted. Cytogenetic analyses (centromere index and centromere position – arm ratio), as well as some physiological parameters (asphyxia tolerance level) point to authentic traits which these bees possess and which are sufficient to assign them to the special Peshtersko-Sjenichky ecotype. This is supported by the results of the comparative analyses performed on these bees and the bees from the lowland regions of the Pannonic depression, as well as by some behavioral traits of these bees (the degree of aggresiveness, hygienic behavior etc.). On the basis of the obtained results, the authors emphasized a need to ensure the status of a biologically protected ecotype for the Peshtersko-Sjenichky honey bee, and expressed their support for further research in accordance with the global orientation for the protection of the diversity of the authentic genome. zoran@vet.bg.ac.yu

Marine Biology: Function, Biodiversity, Ecology (2Rev ed)
ISBN: 0195141725
By: Levinton, Jeffrey S.
Publisher: Oxford University Press Inc, USA
Format: hardback
SKU: 0195141725 Our Price: 27.99
Table of contents: For this new edition, Levinton has updated throughout, and added all-new boxes to highlight research topics of current interest. The coverage of marine mammals and on hypothesis testing have been expanded significantly, and new sections have been added on subtidal rocky reefs, metapopulations, marine invasions, marine protected areas and no-take zones for fishery, and molecular approaches to marine biology and fisheries. The CD-ROM "Marine Biology Explorations" currently available as a supplement, will be revised to include the guided tour environments (about 180 color slides) and a self-test keyed to the chapters, and bound into the back of each copy (to encourage student use and to hamper used-book resale). The author maintains a website linked to the book, and would also prepare, as an ancillary, powerpoint lectures incorporating the line illustrations from the text, deliverable on CD-ROM as an incentive for course adopters. There is also an associated Marine Biology Lab Manual (Exploring Marine Biology, by Paul Haefner).

Shrubs constitute its main source of food. Herds of these wild camels move widely, their distribution being linked to water. The animals tend to concentrate in and around mountains, because most springs are there and snow on the slopes may provide the only moisture in winter. Concentrations of up to 100 camels occur near the mountains, but most herds contain 2 - 15 members. The small average herd size in the past 100 years reflects not just the aridity of the environment but also heavy hunting pressure. The range of the wild Bactrian camel in historic times extended from the great bend of the Yellow River at 110 deg E westward across the deserts of southern Mongolia and northwestern China to central Kazakhstan . It was already heavily hunted for its meat and hide in the 1800's, and by the 1850's it persisted only in remote areas of the Gobi and Taklimakan Deserts in
