Biodiversity, Ecology and Health Fund Wildlife Trust’s Biodiversity, Ecology and Health Fund (BEHF) supports projects that with a modest level of funding can make an impact on protecting nature or safeguarding ecological health. Typical projects have budgets of less than $10,000 U.S. and can be completed in one to two years. BEHF projects normally focus on research aimed at improving wildlife conservation science, conservation medicine, natural resources management, or public environmental policies by local scientists working full-time in the country in which the project takes place. Wildlife Trust’s BEHF Program does not fund: 1) administrative overhead or unrestricted operating support; 2) salaries (daily field expenses are funded); 3) tuition; and 4) attendance at conferences. How to Apply for 2004/2005 : Sorry the deadline was November 15, 2003. How to Apply for 2005/2006 Three - five projects are selected each year. Proposal abstracts are due November 15th, and awards are announced the following May 30 for projects commencing July 1. The next deadline for applications is November 15, 2004

Department of Marine Ecology
Department of Marine Ecology IO PAS consists of two parts: the chemical part - Marine Pollution Laboratory deals with the advanced methods of chemical analyses of the sea water and sediment. The ecological part (Arctic Ecology Group) of the deaprtment works on comparative field ecology. The climate - related patternsof biodiversity, communities and population structure are studied in Baltic,European Arctic Seas and recently in tropical areas.

    Cloudbridge
    Private Nature Reserve
High in a Costa Rican cloud forest,
a unique conservation venture is under way.
Cloudbridge situated in a beautiful and remote cloud forest on the highest mountain in Central America, is a private nature reserve in Costa Rica. It was created to preserve and reforest T he reserve has three purposes:
    • To help rebuild a deforested part of the tropical cloud forest, thus bridging a gap between two mountainside forests. As well as protecting the existing forest and allowing natural regrowth, we are planting a mix of native trees , thousands of them, to turn pasture back into forest.
Restoring and preserving the native forest protects the biodiversity for which the neotropical forests, and those in Costa Rica in particular, are so famous. Deforestation is causing the loss of about 100 species every day 4 species per hour. Preserving forest and planting trees also helps offset air pollution . As they grow, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air. This project is but a tiny step to counteract global climate change, but every tree matters. Cloud forest foliage and epiphytes also have a unique capacity to capture moisture in the air. Thus through their impact on the air, water and soil quality, flood control, climate patterns, and numerous known and unknown plant and animal species, cloud forests profoundly affect life surrounding them and life around the planet.
    • To demonstrate that reforestation can improve lives and

CURRENT ISSUE AND THIS WEEK'S COMMENTARY SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER, 2005
    CITIES OF THE FUTURE
By 2007, 3.2 billion people—a number larger than the entire global population of 1967—will live in cities. Developing countries will absorb nearly all of the world’s population increases between today and 2030. The urban growth rate of 1.8 percent for 2000 to 2030 will double the number of city dwellers in less than 30 years. Meanwhile, rural populations are growing scarcely at all. In this cover story, E profiles some of the world’s largest and most environmentally challenged megacities. By Divya Abhat, Shauna Dineen, Tamsyn Jones, Jim Motavalli, Rebecca Sanborn, and Kate Slomkowski POVERTY IS TERRORISM If our “mega-cities” coverage in this issue doesn’t convince our readers and the substantial audience of international politicians and journalists also receiving it that the world has much bigger problems on its hands than terrorism, then I don’t know what will. On September 11, 2001 some 3,000 people died in one single savage act in one day. Yet around the world 10 times that many children die in one day, every day.
