Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Sponsored jointly with the School of Medicine, but administered through the CABNR, this major provides a strong scientific education with emphasis on biochemistry and molecular biology. Classroom instruction, combined with laboratory and research work, makes this an exciting course of study. You can pursue scientific careers in a wide variety of fields including biotechnology, and the life, health, agricultural and medical sciences. Students who hold a bachelor's degree and who have a background in the biological and/or physical sciences will be considered for this program. Grant Cramer here John Cushman is a Co-PI of the Vitis project. His research interests focus on understanding the mechanisms by which plants perceive and respond to environmental stresses such as high salinity and drought. Major research projects in his lab include the induction and regulation of Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) by abiotic stress and circadian clocks, functional genomics of plant stress tolerance, engineering abiotic stress tolerance in higher plants using hydrophilins, and functional genomics of protein kinases and phosphoproteins using the calcium-dependent protein kinase (CDPK) superfamily to identify substrates using substrate traps and high throughput interaction screens using the yeast two-hybrid system. For the Vitis genomics project, he oversees the EST production and microarray design for transcriptional profiling of abiotic stress responsive genes. You can find more information about John here David Schooley here Pedro Mendes is a Co-PI of the Vitis project. He is a Research Assistant Professor at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech. Pedro is in charge of the Bioinformatics part of the Vitis project. His group is responsible for the development of the integrative software program called DOME (Database for OMES) and is also building a biochemical network database (B-net). North Campus Move
Preparation for the Structural Group's move to new laboratories in ND8 and ND10 are nearing completion as construction enters the final phase. Although the exact date(s) of the move is still subject to revision it is expected to be complete in early 2005. Moving to new facilities are the laboratories of Mike Rosen, Kevin Gardner, Jose Rizo Rey, Betsy Goldsmith, Hong Zhang, Mischa Machius, Steven Sprang, Johann Deisenhofer, Zbyszek Otwinowski, and Nikolai Grichine.

Biochemistry (BCHM) Course Prerequisites The prerequisites for enrollment in entry Biochemistry (BCHM) courses (BCHM 461 or BCHM 463) are successful completion of two semesters of organic chemistry. Life Science majors must have completed organic chemistry with grades of C or better. Here is an FAQ related to BCHM prerequisites I am majoring in a non-Life Science major, and need BCHM 463 (or BCHM 461), but I got a D in organic II. Can I enroll in BCHM 463 (or BCHM 461)?
  • You are permitted to take BCHM 463 (or BCHM 461), but are advised that taking biochemistry following a D in organic II is, in the eyes of the Department, unwise. Biochemistry is, in many ways, organic chemistry inside a living cell. Not having a solid foundation of organic chemistry (particularly the chemistry of carbonyl compounds covered in organic II) will make passing a biochemistry course difficult.
I haven't taken organic II, but I have taken courses in molecular and cellular biology, genetics, pathology, etc. Can I take biochemistry?
  • No. Those courses are not adequate preparation for biochemistry. Experience has shown that students in your situation who have been allowed to take biochemistry either fail or withdraw in lieu of failing.

Living organisms use the same 20 amino acids to make their proteins. In addition, all life uses the same DNA triplet codes. All life uses ATP as its usable form of energy. This supports the idea that all life has descended from a common ancestor. During the long history of life on earth, the protein sequences of various molecules have slowly changed. Organisms that are very closely related will have few or no changes in their protein sequences. The protein that makes up cytochrome C in the mitochondria is composed of over 100 amino acids. Some of the amino acids in this protein change over long periods of time. We find that comparing these sequences in living organisms today will reveal evolutionary relationships. For example, two living species who shared a common ancestor 500 million years ago will have more differences in their amino acids sequences than two species who shared a common ancestor 10 million years ago. Use the table below to answer the following: 1. Which organism below is the most distantly related to humans?

DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY AND MEDICAL GENETICS SUPPLEMENTAL REGULATIONS Putative Effective date: May 2001 The following information gives the regulations and procedures for graduate studies in the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics supplemental to the academic guide of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. GRADUATE STUDIES COMMITTEES The Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics committees for graduate studies consist of the Graduate Admissions Committee and the Graduate Affairs Committee.  The Graduate Admissions Committee consists of three department members, including the Chair, and is responsible for reviewing, accepting and rejecting applications for graduate studies in the department.  The Graduate Affairs Committee is made up of four members including the Chair, and this committee, or the Department Head, as appropriate, deals with all other graduate student concerns in the department. The biochemistry department suffers from some of the worst undergraduate facilities on campus.
Whilst being internationally recognised for its research, the department was not built with undergraduate teaching in mind, and consequently does not have either a common room or any large lecture theatres. This means that all lectures in the first and second years goes on elsewhere on campus, resulting in very little contact with other students in the Department. However once there the lectures are very friendly, with lecturers knowing every student by name (a very rare thing at Imperial). Indeed all the staff are very friendly, and extremely helpful once you approach them. The workload in the first year is massive, with around twelve lectures plus twelve hours of (often irrelevant) lab each week. This reflects the need to pick-up a thorough grounding in physics, maths, chemistry and biology very quickly. Consequently, whilst the department only demand chemistry A-level, it is extremely advisable to have done biology as well. A maths A-level is also helpful, although there is extra maths tuition provided to help those with less maths background to catch-up. Fortunately, the timetabling in the second and third years calms down, and although the work is still very hard, it becomes much more manageable. The workload still remains high, however, as the lecturing style assumes that students will do a considerable amount of reading around on the subject - you will only receive a 2:2 with the lecture content alone.
