Message from the Department of biochemisty. Matriculating Student Questionnaire In Preparation for Orientation To the Medical Education Main Website
http://www.mededu.miami.edu/Admissions/message
Dear Students,
Welcome to Medical Biochemistry! As you will see, at the University of Miami, Medical Biochemistry is taught as one section of Molecular Basis of Life at the very beginning of the freshman year. In our experience, students are admitted into the MD program with varying backgrounds in Biochemistry. Therefore, there will be many of you who may already have a sound footing in basic biochemistry while others may have very little prior exposure to this subject. This situation appears to be unique to Biochemistry since most of the other subjects taught in the medical curriculum will be new to everyone. To ensure that everyone starts the course with some basic knowledge of biochemistry, we strongly encourage you to prepare by reviewing the subject in:
  • Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry, 3rd Edition (2005) by P.C. Champe, R.C. Harvey and D.R. Ferrier

An excellent and recommended alternative to familiarize yourselves with basic biochemsitry concepts, is to review the Biochemistry BMB258 course that is taught by Drs. Whelan and Huijing on the Coral Gables campus. They have kindly made the complete set of lectures available to you. To access the information, visit the link below. You will be prompted for your user name and password before downloading or saving the files.

My research focuses on the biosynthesis of essential elements for the virulence and intracellular survival of Mycobacterium tuberculosis within the human host, such as: polysaccharides and glycolipids of the cell envelope, vitamins, and branched-chain amino acids. By combining recombinant DNA methods, protein purification, kinetic and physicochemical analysis, we hope to identify the biosynthetic pathways, as well as the structural analogs of substrates and inhibitors of the target enzymes. My overall goal is to provide a better understanding of the biology of mycobacteria, and to apply this knowledge to the development of improved antituberculosis drugs and vaccines.
