Summer Safe, Not Sorry!
Pools’ Rules
Always follow posted rules, when playing in swimming pools. Swimming with a buddy is a must, plus never swim after dusk. When skiing, boarding or riding in a boat, it’s the life jacket that will keep you afloat.
Dashin’ Fashion
Wearing a helmet is not worth debating, whether you’re biking, blading or roller-skating. Running barefoot in the grass? Beware of rocks, sticks and glass. When cutting grass, do wear your shoes, cause toes are not to good to lose.
Liking Biking
You know the drill - Look both ways, cross at the light, be sure you stay in clear sight. Use hand signals to tell your intention, this is part of accident prevention.
Detect-n-Protect
Sunscreen protects you from the sun, and keeps you outside having fun. Thunder and lightning means you should play, safely inside for part of the day. You know to stay away from dangers, remember that includes suspicious strangers. Download these Summer Safety Tips to print and hang on your refrigerator!

Keep in mind that a combination of factors can come together to put your children in danger. Water and sun safety are paramount, as is keeping children hydrated and cool. You also should protect kids from insects that can transmit harmful diseases or make them miserably itchy. Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death in children and teens. Small children can drown in just a few inches of water such as bathtubs, buckets, fountains or puddles. But with summer come even greater risks as children play in pools, lakes, rivers and oceans. Caution must be taken and children should always be closely supervised and never left alone when in or near water. Even if children know how to swim, it does not mean they are safe. Air-filled flotation devices like water wings are not a replacement for a life preserver, which all children should wear when boating. And there are the bugs. Beware of ticks, chiggers and mosquitoes. Check yourself and your kids carefully for ticks after being in the woods. For mosquitoes, empty containers of standing water to deter breeding, use insect repellent and avoid being out at dusk. For chiggers, try an old home remedy; rub powdered sulfur, which you can find at the drug or garden supply store, around ankles, waistline and other spots where they like to bite. This is especially helpful if children are playing in grassy areas or berry picking. If they still get bites, a dab of anti-itch cream like Benadryl usually helps. And don’t forget to watch out for poison ivy; it’s very common in our area.

Volume 6 Issue 1 Wax On Wax Off: It's Time for Xtreme Homeschooling by Diane Flynn Keith The demise of space for kids to play meant that games could only be played at schools or in parks with groomed fields properly measured to assure rule-book adherence to adult-created game codes and parameters. The fields were fenced and locked so that in order for kids to play, an adult had to reserve or rent the facility. When the game was played, responsible adults were needed to supervise the kids, and make sure they behaved themselves. Coaches were needed to train the kids in the proper methods for warming up before a game and cooling down afterwards. They taught the kids the right techniques for holding a ball, kicking a ball, hitting a ball, and throwing a ball. They taught the kids the rules and made sure they obeyed them. They even supplied the only sanctioned snack (as any soccer mom can tell you) - oranges, cut into quarters. Parents, of course, came to the games to cheer their kids on. After investing so much in the gear and training, they naturally wanted to see how well their progeny did. From the sidelines they'd scream, yell, and shout their kids to victory. Kids on the losing team were often belittled and berated by parents and coaches who seemed to take the game loss as a personal failure. Grown-ups in the stands erupted into full-blown tantrums over close calls or bad calls by umpires and referees. For the adults, winning was everything, losing wasn't an option, and fun wasn't even a consideration.

Summer Fitness Hints
Habits that include eating nutritious foods and understanding the relationship between physical and emotional health will help your child grow up healthy. Exercise is broken up into two basic categories:
It is important to note that watching too much TV can deprive your child of opportunities to play and exercise. Set a good example. Limit TV viewing. Simple walking is a great exercise. Leave a few minutes earlier and walk to you destination instead of driving. Everyone can exercise. As you and your child achieve fitness through exercise, a growing self-confidence will be achieved.
Identify safety rules and practice to prevent accidents. Look for playground and swimming pool rules that give safety precautions, and explain them to your child. Make sure he/she wears safety equipment for specific activities: a helmet when riding a bike and knee and elbow pads when roller-skating, roller blading, or skate boarding. Have your child practice hand signals while biking and remember to always use seat belts while riding in a car. Teach your child how to protect himself/herself. Tell them not to talk to strangers and walk with a friend if possible. They should avoid isolated areas such as woods or vacant lots. Keep lines of communication open so that your child will tell you if someone touches them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable, or tries to get them to take a ride in a strange car, or follows them home.

Full Review Well, we got our bikes, we got our helmets, and we set off for a ride. I got separated from my husband, and then, I was lost. Why? Because we had no communications available on the bikes between us. This sent me in search of something that we could use. I came across the chatterbox, and decided this is what we need. Since getting them, I haven't been disappointed, nor have I been separated! 14 Channels/38 Talk groups: In all honesty, I haven't had to mess with this, I just make sure my husband and I are on the same numbers and go. It's nice to know there's more than one of each to use though. So, I don't have a big opinion on this part.

Falls Leading Injury of Nebraska Children under 15 Lincoln SAFE KIDS program It was found that certain age groups had certain fall-related characteristics. For instance, children under age one were at a greater risk from falls associated with furniture, stairs and baby walkers. Children ages one to four suffer from fall-related injuries that tend to occur in the home and at playgrounds. Children ages 10 to 14 are injured due to sports-related activities and playground equipment. Injuries resulting from these falls range from a fracture to injury to the brain and spinal cord. Other major findings were that children one to four had the highest rate of fall-related injuries compared to any other age group. "Many concerns for parents and other caregivers of keeping kids safe does not include protecting them from a fall," says Jeanne Bietz, Nebraska SAFE KIDS Coordinator. "This report brings to light the need to practice better preventative measures to keep kids from being injured to the point they must visit the hospital." There are many proven preventative measures that can be taken to reduce hospitalizations due to falls. These measures include proper supervision of children in the home and on playgrounds, adequate surfacing under playground equipment, the proper use of safety equipment such as a helmet when riding a bike, roller blading or skate boarding and adequate education on sports safety.

To see whether you’re “safety smart” when it comes to exercise, answer the questions below and then read the information to find out more. The more times you answer “yes,” the more safety smart you are!
Do you always wear a helmet when you’re supposed to? If you said yes, you’re really using your head! Whether you’re biking or inline skating around the neighborhood, or playing sports like baseball, football and hockey, wearing a helmet helps keep you safe in case you fall or get hit by a ball! Make sure it’s the right type of helmet for the activity you’re doing. It’s not smart to use your bike helmet for softball or your softball helmet for hockey.
Does your helmet fit right? Here’s another heads up: A helmet that’s too big, wobbly or uncomfortable isn’t going to protect you right. So don’t borrow your big sister’s or your friend’s helmet. Your coach or someone at the store can help you and your parents pick one that fits you just right. Once you have your helmet, always make sure you put it on the right way.
Are you fully equipped to have fun?

Summary: Some bicycle helmets posters. We do not have copies!
Many current posters from helmet manufacturers do not feature a "wear your helmet" theme, but the shots of heroes like Lance Armstrong in his helmet carry a message. We do not try to catalog those here, since they are generally just dramatic photos of one racer. In the newer ones the racer is more likely to have a helmet on.
