More than anything else, people everywhere are looking for something they can depend on. The Word of God is the only real authority we have. His Word shines light upon human nature. More clearly, it shows us the way to God. It is in the Bible that we find the answers to life's most important questions. The Bible is the written record of God's intention. Its theme is salvation through His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

From Abraham to David
An English translation of J.G. van der Land's book 'Van Abraham tot David' ('From Abraham to David') is due at about the end of 2001. The book describes the ancient history of Israel against a historical background of the Ancient Near East and with reference to recent archaeological discoveries which show the correctness of the Biblical accounts. Dating the Exodus from Egypt and the Conquest of Canaan is a major subject in the book. On the basis of numerous archaeological studies of recent date it is demonstrated that the usual late dating of the Exodus, which has caused many Biblical data to be rejected as unreliable, cannot be maintained. The Exodus must have taken place around 1400 B.C. The price will be about $14 excluding postage. If you are interested, you can subscribe for the book by contacting BGA through e-mail: bga@bga.nl or writing to:

QUESTION ANSWER Are the Biblical Tales of the Old Testament largely true accounts of Human History? The Old Testament is based in part on older texts, which have been found in the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran. Old Testament texts have forbears in Sumerian, Akkadian and Pharaonic sources and materials. Is the Bible the Word of God? It depends on how you look at it. Everything in the Universe is ultimately God´s creation, so also the "Word" of God in the Bible. Did God create us in his / her / its image?

. . . Example Comparison:
The Bible vs. The Book of Mormon
- R. Totten - © 2004 The Bible vs. The Book of Mormon (from Joseph Smith): Are they true historically?
People who believe these writings to be "scripture," consider them to portray actual history.
Although with some religions (such as Buddhism and Hinduism, with an Eastern worldview)
it makes no difference whether their teachings are associated with actual history,
because they are basically just religious philosophy but in contrast, both of
the "Scriptures" of Christianity and Mormonism are clearly portrayed as though
they give histories with real people, places and events. But do they? For these two writings, the answer to this question revolves around two issues:
  • Does the writing contain original historical information which is not merely copied from another work? This is key, because material which is clearly and demonstrably copied from an outside source, does not demonstrate historicity of the work in question and the copied material must be excluded from consideration. Rather, it is only the material which is

Desperate Midwives
(Jimmy Akin) A reader writes: In Exodus 1, God blessed some women for lying, because their lies saved the first born Hebrews. There are other examples of people lying in the Old Testament and it being a good thing. So, can morality be relative depending on circumstances? I know sin can change from grave to venial depending on circumstances, but in that example I used, God blessed them, not just excused their lies as venial sins. Thanks! Let's look at the passage: Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiph'rah and the other Pu'ah

Barr, James Emeritus Regius Professor of Hebrew, Oxford University, and Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Hebrew Bible, Vanderbilt University History and Ideology in the Old Testament Biblical Studies at the End of a Millennium Print ISBN 0198269870, 2000 Abstract: Is the Bible historically true? Or are its narratives the expression of the ideologies of partisan groups far removed in time from the events depicted? The questions are not new, but are now being posed in a different terminology and outlook, often characterized as postmodernism. The book goes back to redefine the term 'biblical criticism' and concentrates on some examples from the history of Israel. An attempt is made to clarify the possible meanings of 'ideology' and some relations between postmodernism and theology are examined. Tradition and continuity are to be prized in contrast to the feverish grasp at novelty.

99. Is Reincarnation Biblical?
A response to the claim that reincarnation can be found in the Bible.
http://home.earthlink.net/~ronrhodes/Reincarnation.html
Downloadable Articles
Is Reincarnation Biblical? Today approximately 30 million Americans (one in four) believe in reincarnation. The word "reincarnation" literally means to "come again in the flesh." The process of reincarnation - continual rebirths in human bodies - allegedly continues until the soul has reached a state of perfection and merges back with its source (God or the "Universal Soul"). One's lot in life, according to those who believe in reincarnation, is based on the law of karma. This law says that if bad things happen in one's life, this is an outworking of bad karma. If good things happen in one's life, this is an outworking of good karma. "Karma" refers to the "debt" a soul accumulates because of good or bad actions committed during one's life (or past lives). If one accumulates good karma by performing good actions, he or she will be reincarnated in a desirable state. If one accumulates bad karma, he or she will be reincarnated in a less desirable state. In Shirley MacLaine's book Out on a Limb we are told, "Reincarnation is like show business. You just keep doing it until you get it right." But these passages, rightly interpreted, do not support reincarnation. Matthew 11:14 does not really teach that John the Baptist was a reincarnation of Elijah. Luke 1:17, an important cross reference, tells us that the ministry of John the Baptist was carried out "in the spirit and power of Elijah." Moreover, reincarnationists conveniently forget that John the Baptist, when asked if he was Elijah, flatly answered, "No!" (John 1:21).
