181. A Biblical Look At The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit
The major doctrine the Pentecostals and Charismatics do not understand is the dispensational truth that Christians are not in the Old Testament times, but live in a different dispensation.

A BIBLICAL LOOK AT THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT by Cooper Abrams
Many Christian groups today are teaching the false doctrine that after a believer has been saved they then have a later experience in which they receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Don Basham, a leading Charismatic writer, says this ". . .experience is a second encounter with God (the first is conversion) in which the Christian begins to receive the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit into his life." The Charismatics and Pentecostals falsely teach that this experience usually comes when one prays for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. It is a very emotional experience in which the person "feels" the presence of the Holy Spirit. Basham describes the experience as follows. "His (the Holy Spirit) presence may come as a warmth enveloping you, or as a silent powerful Presence enfolding you. You may experience a tingling sensation or a gentle vibration as if touched by an electric current. But even if you feel nothing, rest quietly in the confidence that the Holy Spirit is now coming upon you in power and is about to furnish you with a new language of prayer and praise to God." After having the experience they then are empowered by the Holy Spirit. Basham states, "The average Christian, although truly professing Christ, operates largely on his own power, making his own decisions, living by his own strength, and controlling his own life. But through the baptism of the Holy Spirit the Christian steps out of this natural realm into a realm where he can begin to experience the supernatural gifts and powers of God's Holy Spirit."

Hebrew Language Resources
Here I provide tools and resources to aid in the learning of the Hebrew language. If you would like to see new software created, resources added, or features included please e-mail me at s a n d o v a l@netwaysglobal.com . If you have any tips or suggestions to help me and others better learn this fascinating language please send them as well. For me the study of Hebrew provides great insights into theology a most important topic for all of us. For those interested in discussing theology you will find that while I love to learn any truth, I full expect you to be honest and I will not tolerate defamation and bigotry. My faith is 100% Biblical and has upheld that standard perfectly. In the past detractors (i.e. "anti-Mormons") that could not handle the impact of the Lord's promise in Luke 21:15 have turned to character defamation, dishonesty, and persecution not unlike the behavior of the Pharisees towards the Lord Jesus Christ, during His mortal ministry. My message will always be one of invitation much like the Lord's invitation to "Come and See". True "Christians", and faithful Jews will not turn to deceit to make their point(s). True disciples of the Messiah will seek edification and the Spirit of the Lord in all that they do. My rule in this regard is to honor the thirteenth Article of Faith as taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith: "We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things."

184. Why Biblical Counseling Is Unbiblical
John H. Coe's reply to Jay Adams' and the Bobgans' affirmation of the Bible as the sole source for authority concerning human nature, values and prescriptions for healthy living.

Why Biblical Counseling is Unbiblical

A number of Christians both lay and clergy are still uncomfortable with and even hostile to the notion of Christian psychology or counseling. Individuals such as Jay Adams (1973, 1976), Dave Hunt (1987) and the Bobgans (1986) have successfully instilled a distrust within large sections of evangelicalism, particularly the more conservative wing, concerning any attempt to address the human moral and spiritual condition from sources outside the biblical text. Instead, they promote and defend what they call the Biblical counseling" position (which I shall refer to as the BC position, cf. Adams, 1973, p.15). This approach to counseling affirms the Bible as its sole source for authority concerning human nature, values and prescriptions for healthy living.
1 Portions of this paper were read at the 1991 Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) Far West Region Annual Meeting.
The BC position raises a number of important and deep issues concerning the nature of authority in the scriptures and the social sciences concerning their ability to address values and the human condition. I will explore these issues from the perspective of the scriptures themselves, particularly the OT Wisdom literature, and argue contrary to the BC position for the legitimacy of a science of values which discovers God's moral wisdom in nature, particularly in human phenomena Consequently, I hope to show that a developed OT Wisdom theology provides a biblical framework, mandate and justification for the work of the Christian psychologist. If successful, this will provide the psychologically informed theologian, pastor, counselor as well as psychologist a common ground in the bible from which to speak psychology gently and wisely into an otherwise resistant church. As the OT sage says, the tongue of the wise seeks to make words of knowledge acceptable

185. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Elijah
Commentary on the biblical prophet from the traditional Catholic perspective.

Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... E > Elijah A B C D ... Z
Elias
Elias (Heb. 'Eliahu , "Yahveh is God "; also called Elijah). Of Elias's origin nothing is known, except that he was a Thesbite; whether from Thisbe of Nephtali (Tob., i, 2, Gr.) or from Thesbon of Galaad, as our texts have it, is not absolutely certain, although most scholars, on the authority of the Septuagint and of Josephus , prefer the latter opinion. Some Jewish legends, echoed in a few Christian writings, assert moreover that Elias was of priestly descent; but there is no other warrant for the statement than the fact that he offered sacrifices. His whole manner of life resembles somewhat that of the Nazarites and is a loud protest against his corrupt age. His skin garment and leather girdle (2 Kings, 1, 8), his swift foot (1 Kings, xviii, 46), his habit of dwelling in the clefts of the torrents (xvii,3) or in the caves of the mountains (xix, 9), of sleeping under a scanty shelter (xix, 5), betray the true son of the desert. He appears abruptly on the scene of history to announce to Achab that Yahveh had determined to avenge the apostasy of Israel and her king by bringing a long drought on the land. His message delivered, the prophet vanished as suddenly as he had appeared, and, guided by the spirit of Yahveh, betook himself by the brook Carith, to the east of the Jordan, and the ravens (some critics would translate, however improbable the rendering, "Arabs" or "merchants") "brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening, and he drank of the torrent" (xvii, 6).

Next Prophet Nuh He was Noah Ibn Lamik, Ibn Mitoshilkh, Ibn Enoch, Ibn yard, Ibn Mahlabeel, Ibn Qinan, Ibn Anoush, Ibn Seth, Ibn Adam the Father of Mankind (PBUH). According to the history of the People of the Book, (refers to the Jews, and Christians, so called by Allah because they received Revealed Books, Taurat, Zabur and Injeel. These names are translated 'Torah, Psalms, and Gospels' respectively, but the books that are extent are corrupt. Of the Revealed Books, ONLY the Quran remains exactly as it was revealed). the period between the birth of Noah and the death of Adam was 146 years. (According to Genesis 5 (new Revised Standard Version), Noah was born one hundred and twenty six years after the death of Adam. Ibn Abbas narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "The period between Adam and Noah was ten centuries." (Sahih Bukhari, Noah was born 1056 years after Adam's creation (or after he left the Garden of Eden). Thus, this hadith does not contradict the previous statement from the People of the Book as it may first appear to do. The reader should keep in mind, however that any statement or narratives taken from the People of the Book are not necessarily credible. This was taken from Genesis 5). For many generations Noah's people had been worshipping statues that they called gods. They believed that these gods would bring them good, protect them from evil and provide all their needs. They gave their idols names such as Waddan, Suwa'an, Yaghutha, Ya'auga, and Nasran, (These idols represented, respectively, manly power; mutability, beauty; brute strength, swiftness, sharp sight, insight) according to the power they thought these gods possessed.

No, I'm not a Mormon. Now that we've eliminated that distraction, let me ask you a question or two. Why did you click on this link? Could it be because after reading the Bible all these years you've just never been able to figure out why God never condemned polygamy? You know that most everyone says that it's sinful except God. So when you saw the title of this link you thought, "there's actually someone who thinks polygamy is not sinful? I wonder how they might defend this position from the Bible?" Exegetically it's not hard to prove from the O.T. and N.T. that polygamy was and still is a valid form of marriage and is not sinful. It's really a matter of whether we want to follow tradition or God's Word on this issue. 1) THE O.T. AND THE LAW ON POLYGAMY

Catholic Biblical Apologetics
Apologetics without apology!
What does the Roman Catholic Church teach about ...? ... and why? This book surveys the origin and development of Roman Catholic Christianity from the period of the apostolic church, through the post-apostolic church and into the conciliar movement. Principal attention is paid to the biblical basis of both doctrine and dogma as well as the role of paradosis (i.e. handing on the truth) in the history of the Church. Particular attention is also paid to the hierarchical founding and succession of leadership throughout the centuries. This is a set of lecture notes used since 1985 to teach the basis for key doctrines and dogmas of the Roman Catholic Church. The objectives of the course were, and are:
  • To present the biblical basis for the origin and development of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • To present the development of the canon of Scripture and evolution of biblical teaching in the Church.
  • To understand the role of paradosis /tradition in the oral transmission of revelation.
  • To study the Council of Jerusalem, described in the 15

189. Bible Study - Daniel
biblical biography of the prophet, with references to chapter and verse.

Daniel
Daniel, from the Hebrew word meaning God is my Judge , is one of the major prophets of the Old Testament (see Old Testament Fact File and of the New Testament (see New Testament Fact File ) since much of the prophecy given to him corresponds to that given to the apostle John in the Book of Revelation, and for our time now - Jesus Christ Himself specifically referred to events recorded in The Book of Daniel (Matthew 24:15) that would occur just prior to The Return Of Jesus Christ Daniel was of royal lineage (Daniel 1:3), probably born in or near Jerusalem about 622 B.C. during the reign of Josiah (see Kings of Israel and Judah ). In the third year of the reign of King Jehoiakim, about 605 B.C., the Babylonians under King Nebuchadnezzar , besieged Jerusalem, looted the original Temple that had been built by Solomon (the complete devastation would come later, about 586 B.C.), and took a number of the people of Judah away into exile in Babylon. Among them was the teenage Daniel (Daniel 1:1-3). Despite being a prisoner-exile, Daniel's living conditions in Babylon were likely at least as good as they had been back home. He was selected, along with a number of others, to be trained for service in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 1:3-7). There, he distinguished himself with wisdom and ability (Daniel 1:19).

193. Biblical Personalities: Rebecca
A contemporary Jewish look at the matriarch.
http://www.emanuelnyc.org/bulletin/archive/54.html
Biblical Personalities: Rebecca
Before the Holy One caused Sarah’s sun to set, he caused Rebecca’s sun to rise (Bereishit Rabbah 58:2). As long as Sarah was alive, a cloud signifying the Divine Presence was tied to the entrance of her tent, the doors were open wide, her dough was blessed, and a lamp burned in the tent from one Sabbath eve to the next. When she died, all these ceased, but when Rebecca came, they all returned. When Isaac saw Rebecca separate dough in purity, “she became his wife” (Genesis 24:67) (Bereishit Rabbah 60:16). Rebecca was worthy of bearing the twelve tribal ancestors (Bereishit Rabbah 63:6). She came from Abraham’s country, from his kindred, and from his father’s house. When Eliezer, Abraham’s servant, met Rebecca at the well and she provided water for him and his camels, evincing both her remarkable physical beauty and gifts of lovingkindness, it was a combination of beshert (“destiny”) and familial “manipulation”(a shiddoch). She left her father’s house, the first bride-to-be in Jewish history to receive a veil and the accompanying blessing of bedeken. From a distance she saw her intended, the pensive and incomplete Isaac, praying in the field for comfort and consolation. “And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebecca, and she became his wife; and he loved her. And Isaac was comforted for his mother” (Genesis 24:67). That Rebecca was perceived by the forlorn Isaac as the perfect replacement for his beloved mother Sarah has many implications, but surely the anxieties of Isaac’s formative years had already made him a worthy candidate for the psychiatrist’s couch. If Joseph was to become the Master of Dreams, Isaac was surely the Master of Ambivalence, but Rebecca’s strength of purpose resolved any lack of resolve that ever plagued this frailest of patriarchs. Rebecca however, continued to grow in stature and in dominion and it was her hand that determined her family’s destiny as she literally “pulled the wool” over the blind and enfeebled Isaac in order to insure the hegemony of the “chosen son,” Jacob.

Article about the biblical prophet from an 1897 Christian source.

Isaiah
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Isaiah the Prophet in Hebrew Scriptures was depicted on the Sistine Chapel ceiling by Michelangelo. Isaiah or Yeshay¡hu "Salvation of/is the LORD Standard Hebrew YəšaÊ¿y¡hu Tiberian Hebrew Yəšaʿăyāh» ) was the son of Amoz, and commonly considered the author of the Book of Isaiah . His ease of access to the king and other leaders (ref. Isa. 7:3; 8:2) taken with traditional sources which tell us that Isaiah was the cousin of Uzziah and therefor of royal lineage; suggests he was of a family of high rank. Isaiah was married to a woman called "the prophetess" (8:3), either because she was endowed with the prophetic gift, like Deborah Judges 4:4) and Huldah 2 Kings 22:14-20), or simply because she was the wife of "the prophet" (Isa. 38:1). He had two sons, who bore symbolic names (Isa. 8:18) - Shear-jashub, 'Remnant will return' (7:3) and Maher-shalal-hash-baz, 'Hasten booty, speed spoil' (8:1-4). He exercised the functions of his office during the reigns of Uzziah (or Azariah)

JERICHO The first city to be conquered by Joshua and the Israelites, Jericho relied on its impenetrable fortifications to withstand any attack. After receiving his spies' report that the fear of Israel gripped the city's inhabitants, Joshua led his army in a march around Jericho's massive walls for seven days. On the seventh day the walls miraculously gave way, allowing the Israelites to conquer the city. The walls did not actually "come tumbling down" as the old spiritual has it. Since they were as thick as they were high, such a tumble would have been meaningless. They sank into the ground, with only a small portion remaining above the ground to mark the miracle. Modern Jericho is populated by Arabs, but there is an ancient synagogue which Jews have made repeated efforts to preserve as a Jewish holy place.

Aaron
Brother of Moses , and High Priest of the Old Law I. LIFE Altogether different views are taken of Aaron's life, according as the Pentateuch, which is the main source on the subject, is regarded as one continuous work, composed by Moses or under his supervisionhence most trustworthy in the narration of contemporary eventsor as a compilation of several documents of divers origins and dates, strung together, at a late epoch, into the present form. The former conception, supported by the decisions of the Biblical Commission, is held by Catholics at large; many independent critics adopt the latter. We shall study this part of the subject under this twofold aspect, although dwelling longer, as is meet, on the former. (a) Traditional Catholic Standpoint According to I Paral., vi, 1-3, Aaron (the signification of whose name is unknown) was the great-grandson of Levi, and the second of the children of Amram and Jochabed, Mary being the eldest and Moses the youngest. From Ex., vii, 7, we learn that Aaron was born eighty-three, and Moses eighty years, before the Exodus. It may be admitted, however, that this pedigree is probably incomplete, and the age given perhaps incorrect. We know nothing of Aaron's life prior to his calling. The first mention of his name occurs when

198. Joseph
Overview of the biblical leader's life and prophecies.
http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/biography/Joseph.html
Joseph
(ca. 1562-1452 BCE)
By Shira Schoenberg
The biblical Joseph was the 11 th son of Jacob Rachel , in Paddan-Aram after she had been barren for seven years. Joseph fathered two of the twelve tribes of Israel: Ephraim and Manasseh. Information about Joseph is found in Genesis chapters 37-50. At the age of 17, Joseph was a shepherd alongside his brothers. Jacob loved Joseph more than he loved his other sons. Joseph would report his brothers’ misdeeds to his father and Jacob gave Joseph a "coat of many colors." The other brothers were jealous of Joseph and hated him. Joseph only further provoked this hatred when he told his brothers about two of his dreams. In the first, sheaves of wheat belonging to his brothers bowed to his own sheaf. In the second, the son, moon, and 11 stars bowed to him. One day, Jacob sent Joseph to Shechem to check on his brothers. Joseph went to Shechem and, when his brothers were not there, followed them to Dothan. When the brothers saw him, they plotted to kill him and throw him into a pit. The oldest brother, Reuben, suggested that they merely throw Joseph into the pit, so Reuben could secretly save Joseph later. When Joseph approached, the brothers took his coat and threw him into the pit. They sat down to eat and saw a caravan of Ishmaelite traders from Gilead in the distance. Judah came up with the idea to sell Joseph into slavery. Joseph was sold for 20 pieces of silver. The brothers then dipped his coat into the blood of a slaughtered goat and brought it back to Jacob. Jacob recognized the coat and concluded that a beast had killed his son. He mourned for many days and was inconsolable.
