Biathlon Sprinting up a long flight of stairs before threading a needle gives an idea of what it's like to compete in Biathlon. This sport combines the endurance of cross-country skiing with the precision and calm of marksmanship. History Biathlon originated long ago. Examples of ancient people using skis and weapons abound. Ancient hunters and warriors discovered that they could preserve energy and increase efficiency by combining skiing and shooting. Rock paintings dating to around 3000 BC show hunters with bow and arrows moving on wooden sliders. Hunting on skis was practiced in Northern Europe, Asia and North America. Chinese hunters tracked wildlife using "winged horses" on the feet as they moved through the snow. During the Middle Ages shooting on skis became a popular form of warfare and by the end of the 19th century, soldiers were being trained on skis in Scandinavia, Russia, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Biathlon Competition Competitions combining skiing and shooting were first organized in 1776 in Norway, where participants fired rifles while racing. The 1st Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix, France included a ski patrol race on its program. This event was organized as a demonstration and was repeated at the 1928, 1936, and 1948 Winter Games. It was not until 1949 that the International Olympic Committee decided to accept Sweden's proposal to include a combination of cross country skiing and shooting in the Olympic program as an individual competition open to civilian competitors. The first Olympic Biathlon was held in Squaw Valley, California, in 1960.

The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. Its roots go back over 4,000 years when Norwegian hunters with spears and arrows chased their prey on skis. In the mid-16th century, troops on skis played major roles in Scandinavian wars and battles, helping give the sport a strong military connection, which it kept until after WWII. The sport was dropped from the Olympic schedule after WWII because of strong anti-military sentiment, but was included again in 1960. The first men's world championship was held in 1958, and the first women's in 1984. In Canada, biathlon was first practiced by the Armed Forces early in the century, but it wasn't until 1968 that Canadian athletes made their first appearance at the Olympics. The sport got the boost it needed during the pre-Olympic fervor of 1988. Northern Europeans skied to hunt for food and, later, skied with weapons to defend their countries. The word "biathlon" stems from the Greek word for two contests. Today it is interpreted as a joining of two sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. In 1960, Biathlon joined the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM). But in 1993, an agreement was made to retain the Union as an umbrella body under which the UIPM and the IBU could act autonomously. It took effect in 1998, but the two sports maintain relations in various projects. Biathlon consists of eight events in the Olympic program. Men and women compete in a sprint, pursuit, individual and relay. Although all biathlon disciplines combine skiing and marksmanship, the sport features several distinct events. Sprint During the sprint, women race 7.5km and men race 10km. Competitors stop twice and must hit all five targets with five bullets. Over the past few years, the Olympic and Paralympic biathlon has become one of the most popular winter sports. Especially in Europe, millions of viewers watched the biathlon events on TV as they followed the Olympic and Paralympic stars during their competitions. For both men and women, competitions are held in three different classes: LW classes (competitors with locomotive disabilities), sitting LW classes and B classes (competitors with a visual impairment). The rifles of the visual impaired athletes are equipped with electro-acoustic glasses, which send different tones to the athletes headphones depending on the accuracy of their shot. The biathlon demonstration to be held during the Paralympic Day is limited to the shooting discipline. Under the instruction of Paralympic athletes all visitors can have a go shooting a rifle for blind and visual impaired athletes and find out about the difficulties of this exciting sport. His responsibilities will include managing the sport input in the venue development of the Whistler Nordic Center as well as overseeing Paralympic Nordic Skiing (Cross-Country and Biathlon) and the Olympic sports of Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined. Mr. Aalberg has an extensive background with Games, both as an athlete and as part of an Organizing Committee. As part of the US National Cross-Country Team he won numerous competitions and participated in Olympic Games and World Championships. In 1997, Mr. Aalberg joined the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC), designing and developing the Soldier Hollow Cross-Country and Biathlon venues as well as directing all 2002 Nordic events. Mr. Aalberg has been involved in the International Ski Federation (FIS) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as a World Cup, World Championship, Olympic and Paralympic Games Technical Delegate.
