Deseret News staff writer
But people know better, and no luge observer is picking against the German superstar, who has twice been voted the most popular athlete in his country, ahead of Michael Schumacher both times.
"The only way to stop him is to steal his helmet," said Chris Hoeger, a 17-year-old who will compete for the Venezuelan luge team in the competition Sunday and Monday at Utah Olympic Park.
Looking at the German star you could easily be deceived into thinking Hackl is the underdog.
At 5-foot-8 inches and 180 pounds, he looks slightly pudgy in his Lycra luge suit. Before he grew his new goatee he resembled Peter Sellers playing the bumbling detective Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther series.
The looks, however, are deceiving. The German is bordering on Olympic history. If he wins gold, like everyone expects, he will become the first Winter Olympian to win four consecutive individual golds in the same event. If the German wins a medal of any color he becomes the first winter athlete to medal in five consecutive Games. Hackl's list of hardware is as long as his legend: silver at Calgary in 1998, gold at Albertville in 1992, gold at Lillehammer in 1994 and gold at Nagano in 1998.

(AP) The U.S. Olympians continued their unprecedented Salt Lake City roll, riding the skeleton sleds of Jimmy Shea, Tristan Gale and Parsley to three more medals - and that was just Wednesday morning.
Jennifer Rodriguez joined the fun later, capturing a speedskating bronze in the 1,500 meters - the second bronze of the games for the former inline skater from Miami. The four medals was the most for the United States in a single day here.
Apolo Anton Ohno, showing no signs of the leg injury he suffered Saturday, returned to speedskating's short track Wednesday night in hopes of adding to the haul. The 19-year-old finished second in his 1,500-meter heat to advance to the semifinals. The finals were later Wednesday. The U.S. team's impressive showing - 25 medals now, including a record eight golds - couldn't overshadow the biggest individual star of Salt Lake City: Ole Einar Bjoerndalen of Norway, who became only the third Winter Olympian to win four golds in a single games.

Before 1924
Because of its popularity in England, figure skating was on the program for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page
1924: Chamonix, France
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."

Bjoerndalen won Norway's second gold of the Games
Ole Einar Bjoerndalen dug deep to win the men's 20-kilometre biathlon gold medal at the Winter Olympics. The Norwegian, who took part in a cross-country competition just two days earlier, held off the challenge of Germany's Frank Luck who took silver at Soldier Hollow. Victor Maigourov of Russia finished in the bronze medal position. Late call-up Jason Sklenar led Britain's standings with a finish of 48th out of 87 competitors.
Bjoerndalen celebrates his victory
Mike Dixon and Mark Gee struggled into 79th and 81st places respectively. Bjoerndalen put skiing power ahead of marksmanship to triumph. The 28-year-old won the individual 10km sprint four years ago at Nagano. This time, he missed two of his 20 targets to earn a two-minute penalty, yet still came home ahead of Luck in 51 minutes 03.3 seconds. The winner had to recover from the 30km cross-country on Saturday, when he finished sixth.
