History of Nagano Olympics
The original ones were selected from the articles related to Olympics, appeared in our newspapers, which are all written in Japanese. A new software system called Internet New Esperanto (INE) was used to translate them into English and Chinese. This system is not perfect yet, so that we must excuse for incompleteness of the translation. The INE project, which aims to propose a new standard language for Internet, is developed by Shinshu University, Co.Ltd. Densan and the Shinano Mainichi Newspaper. From this language, the translations to many languages are easy, and the converse is also true. People will understand other languages more deeply and will have an occasion to be interested in them, by our INE system.

The team, anchored by Kati Wilhelm, overcame a shakey start with impeccable shooting in the final half of the race to defend the title they won in Nagano in 1998. They covered the distance in one hour, 27 minutes, 55 seconds, 30.6 seconds ahead of Norway in second, while Russia narrowly beat Bulgaria for bronze. Mr. Ko Yamaguchi
Head of Media - NAOC (Nagano Olympic Committee) Overseas Press Club, New York
October 21, 1997 Introduction Thank you President, Mr. John Corporon and Cary (Brock). Thank you for your introduction and good evening or good late afternoon. It is my great pleasure to be here in New York, and to have the chance to talk to you, the distinguished members of the Overseas Press Club of America. Also I would like to thank the Consulate General of Japan and the Japan Information Center in New York, which gave me this wonderful chance to meet with fellow journalists in NewYork. My name is Ko Yamaguchi, and I am the Head of Media for the Nagano Winter Games. With my experience spanning 29 years in international circles as a Kyodo News correspondent, I am determined to make every effort in securing and providing the best possible working conditions for the world media who cover the Nagano Games. Today I would like to explain general information, preparations, environmental efforts and press operations in Nagano, as well as the high-tech usage for the 18th Olympic Winter Games in Nagano. Of all host cities in the history of Winter Olympic Games, Nagano is geographically situated the farthest south and closest to the equator. Looking out across the Japanese archipelago, impressive mountain ranges rise steeply from its center. In Nagano Prefecture, 10,000 foot peaks prevail. It was in 1881 that an Englishman, Mr. William Gouland, became enchanted by the beauty of these mountains and called them the "Japan Alps". This is the place where the Nagano Winter Olympic Games are to be held.

2002: THE YEAR IN REVIEW The sports world: boxing, Olympics, etc. The 19th Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, were largely a disappointment for the world of Ukrainian sports in 2002. The Ukrainian delegation, which had some strong medal hopefuls and a handful of outside shots at medals, walked away from Salt Lake empty-handed. However, the performance of world champion boxers Vitalii and Volodymyr Klitschko made worldwide news and introduced much of the boxing world to the tall, sleek and intelligent Ukrainian boxing duo which, at the close of the year, seemed poised to prove themselves as the best in the sport. Most recently, Volodymyr Klitschko defeated American Jameel McCline with a 10th round knockout on December 7 in Las Vegas to successfully defend his WBO world championship title. Klitschko won nine of 10 rounds on two scorecards and eight on the third, but was fighting cautiously throughout the bout. Since the younger Klitschko had boxed in Germany for most of his career, the fight was seen as Volodymyr's first big challenge in the United States. The 26-year-old Volodymyr also defended his title on June 29 against Ray Mercer, winning by technical knockout (TKO) with 1 minute, 8 seconds left in the sixth round. Mercer, whose record was 30-4-1 with 22 knockouts, was bloodied and humbled. In defeating Mercer by TKO, Klitschko (whose record before this bout was 38-1 with 35 knockouts) did what no other fighter in the world had ever done.

On Thursday, February 18, 1960, under storm-threatening skies, the greatest winter athletes in the world gathered in Squaw Valley. As the sun broke through briefly, 2,000 pigeons were released into the air. A throng of 1,000 competitors and 20,000 spectators stood hushed as the Olympic Torch completed a 9,000 mile odyssey from Europe and was placed in front of the Tower of Nations. Following the Olympic Oath and the Star Spangled Banner, Avery Brundage declared the Games "open" while the sky erupted into a kaleidoscope of fireworks and colorful balloons. Thus began the VIII Olympic Winter Games at Squaw Valley. At that time the 1960 Winter Games were the largest ever held, with 34 nations competing in 15 alpine and ski jumping events, 8 speed skiing contests, 3 figure skating competitions and 28 hockey matches. Making its Olympic debut was women's speed skiing and the men's biathlon, a combination of Nordic skiing and rifle marksmanship. The Squaw Games were highlighted by many other Winter Olympic 'firsts'. They were the first Winter Games to be nationally televised and to house the athletes in their own Olympic Village. For the first time in Winter Olympic history artificial refrigeration was utilized for speed skating events and electronic computers were used to tally results.

Description and history of Biathlon - how the sport evolved... This page was last updated23 July 2003 - Under construction
    What is Biathlon:
Biathlon is a Winter Olympic Sport which combines cross country skiing with precision target shooting. There is also a warm weather variant called Summer Biathlon which replaces skiing with running. In a typical Winter race, a Biathlete is required to ski with his or her rifle over a set distance to a shooting range, where five shots at five knockdown targets 50 m down range are taken from prone position. Depending on the format, either a time penalty or penalty laps are assessed for missed shots. The racer then skiis another loop, and comes back to the shooting range for another set of shots - this time from a standing stance. Again penalties are assessed for missed shots. The biathlete then skiis a final loop to complete the race. A more complete description of the various race formats may be found here Though a seemingly unlikely combination of events - one is an aerobic activity which requires strength, speed, and endurance; the other is a passive activity which requires concentration and a steady hand (difficult after you've been skiing all out!), the biathlon concept evolved from two activities which have a long history - hunting and winter warfare.
    1994 Olympic Postcard
    Hunting Origins
Rock paintings depicting hunters with bow and arrow moving on sliding timber have been found near Roedoey, Norway which date back to the Neolithic age (about 3000 BC). However, the first written descriptions of hunting on skiis come from Roman, Greek, and Chinese historical writings. These include such well known authors as the Roman poet Virgil, who described hunting on skiis in 400 BC.

    This is Biathlon
Though a relatively unknown sport in the U.S., Biathlon is the most popular winter Olympic sport on television in Europe today. Why? you might ask. Because it is exciting!
Biathlon gots its Olympic start in 1936 Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch Partenkirchen, Germany. At that time, the Olympic event of Biathlon consisted of one race modeled after a military patrol. After World War II, Biathlon was absent from the Olympic agenda until the 20 kilometer individual event was added to the 1960 Winter Games in Squaw Valley. It has been a part of the Olympic program ever since, but not without changes.
Along with rule change has come technology, faster skis, target systems that show hits and misses instantly, and computer technology that instantly relays feedback from the target to the timing systems and to television production. All of this combined has allowed spectators to follow biathlon competitions with greater ease, understanding, and enthusiasm.
The target system used for the 2004 Biathlon World Cup in Fort Kent is state-of-the-art. Targets measure hits and misses by using a laser to detect the weight of the lead entering the black bullseye of the target. If the wieght measured by the laser equals over half the weight of a .22-caliber bullet, the target registers a hit, and the black target turns white.

Print Preview of Section The governing body for biathlon competition is the International Biathlon Union (IBU), which grew out of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon (UIPMB; International Union of Modern Pentathlon and Biathlon) in 1993. The three main international biathlon competitions are the Winter Olympic Games, the world championships (held in non-Olympic years), and an annual World Cup circuit of contests. Olympic biathlon consists of individual, sprint, and relay competitions. World championship and World Cup competitions include all five biathlon events. Another annual competition, called the Nations Cup, does not involve separate races. Instead, competitors amass Nation Cup points for their performances in the individual and sprint races at each of the three main international competitions. The biathlon became a Winter Olympic sport in 1960, with only the men’s individual event contested. The relay was added to the Olympic roster in 1968, and the sprint joined in 1980. Also in 1980 the World Cup became an official international competition. Women first competed in the Olympic biathlon in 1992, in the individual, relay, and sprint events.
