Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics
The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

The term refers specifically to the winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting . Another popular variant is summer biathlon, which combines cross country running with riflery. Biathlon events are broadcast most regularly where the sport enjoys its greatest popularity, namely Germany ARD ZDF Norway ... The sport has its origins in an exercise for Norwegian soldiers . The first known competition took place in when border patrol companies competed against each other. Gradually the sport became more common throughout Scandinavia as an alternative training for the military . Called military patrol , the combination of skiing and shooting was demonstrated at the Olympic Winter Games in and , but did not gain Olympic recognition then, as the small number of competing countries disagreed on the rules (see also Governing body, below).

    History
The biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, originated in Norway as a training exercise for soldiers. The first known competition took place in 1767 between companies of guards who patrolled the border with Sweden. Late in the 19th century, local rifle and ski clubs in Norway and other Scandinavian countries practiced the sport to keep their members prepared for combat. An early form of the biathlon, called "military ski patrol," was a demonstration sport at the first Winter Olympics in 1924, and it was a medal sport in 1928, 1936, and 1948. Because few countries participated, and the few that did participate had trouble agreeing on the rules, the sport was dropped from the Olympics. However, the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon was founded in 1948 to standardize rules for both the biathlon and the modern pentathlon. The first world championship was held in 1957 and biathlon was added to the Winter Olympic program in 1960, but the U. S. didn't conduct a national championship until 1965. Following the lead of the international organization, the national governing body was originally the U. S. Modern Pentathlon and Biathlon Association. The U. S. Biathlon Association was spun off in 1980.

    Biathlon: The Sport
History Rock paintings in Norway, dating back to about 3000 BC, depict bow hunters on wood skis. The Greeks, Romans, and Chinese also wrote about the method of hunting on foot in earlier times. Biathlon is a sport dating back millennia. The sport is a tribute to these prehistoric roots, which belong to every human being. Though combining a high-intensity sport like cross-country skiing with a precise and methodical activity like rifle shooting might seem awkward, it truly was a way of life for our species before the rise of civilization. The method of combining skiing with shooting for strategic purposes became prevalent in the militaries of the Northern European nations in the 1500s. Such mountain troops became especially important in the Great Northern War between Sweden and Russia in the early eighteenth century. Such adoption of the technique inevitably led to competition among troops. The first organized competition of the sport occurred on the Norwegian-Swedish border in 1767. A plethora of races took place up until the modern age. It was included on a demonstration-basis at the first Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix, France. Such demonstrations occurred until 1948, when World War II increased anti-military sentiments around the world and forced its removal.

    BIATHLON: A BRIEF HISTORY
The term "biathlon" originates with the Greek "bi" meaning "two" and "athlon" meaning "competition" or "contest", and current use generally assigns the meaning to competitions of physical prowess, or "athletics." Thus, "biathlon" could be taken as the combination of any two competitions or sports.
Traditionally, however, the term is assigned to that sport marrying cross-country skiing and marksmanship. It is without question a test of physical end urance, mental discipline and great personal determination.
Remnants of ancient Scandinavian and Finnish art and pictographs depict hunters on skis dated as far back as 4000 years ago. As more and more of these men grouped together, competitions developed to determine who among them was the best. In the 18th century, biathlon played an integral role in military life, having become more a form of national protection that personal survival. The first recorded biathlon took place in 1767 among patrol units guarding the Swedish-Norwegian border. The first recorded ski club promoting skiing and marksmanship was formed in 1861 in Norway, to promote national defence among soldiers during the winter.
