Thu 27 Mar 2003 Winter sports success Krassimir Petkov THE Bulgarian favourite, Nagano 1998 Olympic biathlon champion Ekaterina Dafovska, did not make it to the top as everyone had expected.
Three rounds before the end of the World Cup competition, 27-year-old Dafovska was leading the general ranking, but the world championship in the Russian winter centre of Hanti Mansiisk (March 15 - 22) proved fateful for her. From the first start (the 7.5 km sprint) she was left behind, and her crown discipline, the 15 km individual race, failed to bring her the desired change. And finally, in the mass 12.5 km start she finished eleventh.
However, in general, this was her most successful season. In the final ranking she took the fourth place and a bonus of 10 000 euro from the International Biathlon Union (IBU). Despite the four wins she scored during the season and approximately 82 000 euro she made, Dafovska did not manage to better the achievements of former Bulgarian national champion Nadezhda Alexieva, who finished third in the world in the 1987-1988 season.
World champion of the 12.5 km race in Hati Mansiisk was Albina Ahatova from Russia, who failed a drugs test, but was permitted to take part in the World Cup finals by the IBU chiefs at the very last moment. Ahatova took the trophy in the discipline and ranked second overall. Martina Glagoff from Germany won the World Cup and the 20 000 euro bonus. Silvie Becker of France was third. The other Bulgarian, Pavlina Filipova finished seventeenth.

Feb. 15 (13:00-) Feb. 19 (13:00-) World Cup Biathlon event at Nozawa Onsen (The Shinano Mainichi Shimbun, Mar. 7, 1997) Viewer's guide Biathlon is an event which combines the movement of Cross-Country Skiing with the stillness of Rifle Shooting. The highlight of this sport is how competitors manage to overcome this combination of two totally different sports. Competitors shoulder a rifle weighing 3.5 kg while they are skiing, and positions are decided by those skiing times. On the way to the finish line, competitors must clear targets 50 meters away that are located in specified shooting areas, and if the targets are missed the competitors face time and distance penalties. There are three Olympic Biathlon events for men, the 20 km individual, 10 km sprint and relay (4 x 7.5 km). There are also three women's events; the 15 km individual, 7.5km sprint and relay (4 x 7.5 km). In the individual race, competitors shoot four times in prone, standing, prone and standing positions. In the sprint race competitors shoot twice; first prone, then standing. In the relay, each of the four competitors shoots from both the prone and standing positions. The targets are only 4.5 cm in diameter for the prone position, and 11.5 cm for the standing position, and it is no easy task to shoot accurately without the time to catch one's breath after the exertion of skiing. Competitors only have five shots at the five targets, while they are allowed an additional three shots in the relay.

As you can see by the mixture in the pictures from the '50s. And though the men were flown from base to base we often had to "bus it". But we did have softball and basketball teams. Basketball at Hamilton AFB '52 Softball at Hamilton AFB '52 Softball Team Hamilton AFB '52 Then way back in the '60s we were told to stop encouraging team sports for women because it was "unladylike". Some of us ignored those "suggestions" and the young women - at least in my former squadron at McGuire AFB - appreciated having the chance to compete. In fact their abilities resulted in lots of these:

Athlete Eligibility and Classification
Paralympic competition accommodates athletes with physical disabilities such as spinal injury, cerebral palsy, amputation, and les autres conditions, athletes with vision impairments and blindness, and athletes with cognitive disabilities. There are ten classifications for athletes with physical disabilities, three for athletes with vision loss, and one for athletes with cognitive disabilities. When classifications are combined in competition due to an insufficient number of athletes in a class, a formula is used to "factor" athletes' times according to their classification status. A more detailed description of the classification profiles is posted on the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) web site at http://www.paralympic.org

Physical Fitness
What are the physical fitness standards?
RMC's physical education programme emphasizes conditioning, a basic knowledge of a wide variety of sports and athletics administration. You take two classes of 50 minutes each, back-to-back, once a week. The goal is for you to maintain a high level of physical fitness while you attend RMC, as well as in later years. How is physical fitness tested?
You are tested three times a year and must meet a high standard of stamina, agility and strength. The test includes a 20-metre shuttle run, push-ups, sit-ups, standing long jump and an agility run. What emphasis is placed on physical fitness?
Physical education is one of the four pillars at RMC. To graduate and receive your commission, you must meet all of the required standards. Will I have to participate in team sports?
Yes, you take part in either varsity or intramural sports. You can choose from nearly 20 varsity sports. Depending on your schedule, you will need to devote three or more evenings a week and some weekends. If you are not on a varsity team, you participate in intramural sports. Squadrons compete against each other in over 20 team and individual sports. And as part of your leadership training, you help organize and run the intramural sports programme.

Visit Vista Verde! Opinion Features The Future of Cross-Country Skiing Relies on the Presentation of the Product The following is a Op-Ed piece by Kjell-Erik Kristiansen that appeared in Svensk Skidsport, No. 1, 2004. The original article has been translated and summarized for xcskiworld.com by Inge Scheve. Cross-country skiing on TV is pathetic, claims journalist Lars Nylin in a commentary run by the Swedish Newspaper Aftonbladet this winter. It’s the presentation of the sport that gives, and it doesn’t matter if the International Ski Federation (FIS) changes the formats and the lay-out of the sport, he argues. In the end, it’s the media presentation and packaging that determines if the sport will continue to hold it’s popularity with the Scandinavian fans, and grow in the rest of the ski world. After criticizing the current presentation, Nylin presents a list of ideas he says will help the sport become a more interesting TV production: Most importantly, Nylin says, using CNN-style graphics with text boxes on the bottom that detail racer bios, graphic models of the courses and a rating for course difficulty would help make the sport more available to new viewers and add relevant information to seasoned fans. Four years ago, I as the editor of Svensk Skidsport, the general manager of Canal+ (one of Europe’s largest sports and entertainment cable/ satellite TV channels) and former Norwegian national team coach Inge Braaten paid a visit to Odd Martinsen. At that point, Martinsen was a very important FIS cross-country board member. As representatives for cross-country, we detailed our concerns about losing ground to biathlon among the spectators. It seems that biathlon has made a smoother transition to modern TV presentation.
