Participation
In order for an athlete to qualify in Nordic Skiing (cross-country and biathlon individual) events in the Salt Lake 2002 Paralympic Winter Games, he or she must have obtained an individual result at an IPC/FIS Nordic Skiing-sanctioned competition between 1 March 1998 and 7 January 2002. His or her race time must not be more than 30 percent behind the average time of the first three competitors in his or her class or category, depending on the class system used. If an NPC does not qualify athletes by the above process in this category, the NPC may enter one male and/or one female providing it can be verified that the athlete(s) are of appropriate caliber. Only athletes from NPCs recognized by the IPC may enter competitions in the Paralympic Games. Special Considerations
Athletes who qualify in one individual event are eligible for entry to other events (provided that no more than three athletes per country per class are entered in an event) consistent with IPC rules and restrictions.

or How feminism helped construct the new man
Murray Drummond
Faculty of Education
Edith Cowan University
Research on masculinity and its relationship with sport is an emerging area of gender studies. It could be argued that this interest in masculine research has been inspired by feminist scholarship. Women's movement into the world of sport has inspired a new feminist scholarship on sport. However, as a consequence of illuminating the realities of scholarly ignorance and neglect, this corrective approach tended to leave men's relationship with sport unexamined. It appeared that women and sport became the "gender issue" while men and sport became "the norm". Early "men's studies" literature tended to ignore sport as a focus of inquiry. However, by the early 1980s initial attempts were made to investigate the masculinity sport relationship. These early attempts to construct a feminist analysis of masculinity and sport were thwarted by the lack of any sophisticated theoretical conceptualisation of masculinity. There now exists a critical mass of theory and research on men, masculinity, and the relationship with sport. At this early stage of development new theoretical frameworks are being constructed around which masculine research is based. New methodologies are also being utilised to provide appropriate levels of analysis.

Before 1924
Because of its popularity in England, figure skating was on the program for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page
1924: Chamonix, France
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."

http://www.umfk.maine.edu/biathlon/
The University of Maine at Fort Kent strongly supports the sport of biathlon and is proud of the world class training and competition facility located in our community. As a result of our commitment, we have signed cooperative agreements with both the Maine Winter Sports Center and United States Biathlon Association. Under the agreement with the Maine Winter Sports Center , we have committed to work more closely to promote one another, to share facilities and to expand opportunities for university students and winter sports center athletes. Specifically, the letter of understanding calls for UMFK to accept up to ten students, nominated by MWSC, at reduced tuition. Of the special scholarships, up to five may be made available to out-of-state students at the in-state tuition rate. In addition, five individual scholarships will be made available to in-state students at half the in-state tuition rate. The university also makes its training facilities, including its top-quality “Golds Standard” gym available to MWSC athletes free of charge, and provides, where feasible, affordable housing and food service for summer camps, competitions, and other events hosted by MWSC. On its part, the Maine Winter Sports Center allows UMFK students and employees open access to its facilities during normal operating hours.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The name biathlon is commonly confused with duathlon , the term used to describe any sporting event made up of two disciplines. The term refers specifically to the winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting . Another popular variant is summer biathlon, which combines cross country running with riflery. Biathlon events are broadcast most regularly where the sport enjoys its greatest popularity, namely Germany ARD ZDF Norway ... TVR ), and Slovenia RTV ); also it is broadcast on European-wide Eurosport . The constellation of a sport's main sponsors usually gives a similar indication of popularity: for biathlon, these are the German companies E.ON AG (Ruhrgas, Erdgas) (natural gas energy), Krombacher (beer), and Viessmann (boilers and other heating systems).

History
The sport has its origins in an exercise for Norwegian soldiers . The first known competition took place in when border patrol companies competed against each other. Gradually the sport became more common throughout Scandinavia as an alternative training for the military . Called military patrol , the combination of skiing and shooting was demonstrated at the Olympic Winter Games in and , but did not gain Olympic recognition then, as the small number of competing countries disagreed on the rules (see also Governing body, below).
