About Bhutan's early history is almost nothing known. Written history starts in the 9th century when turmoil in Tibet forces many monks to flee to Bhutan. In Bhutan an own form buddhism develops. State and religion are closely related. Ngawama Namgyal is the father of statehood in 1616. He creates an absolute and theocratic state under the name Bhutan . After his death central power erodes. It lasts until 1885, the moment that Ugyen Wangchuck consolidates power and cultivates closer ties with the British in India. He is elected as the hereditary ruler of Bhutan in 1907, the state becomes the Kingdom of Bhutan. Since 1910 Bhutan is a British protectorate. When India becomes independent in 1947, it takes over the protectorate. India guides the foreign policy of Bhutan. Under king Jigme Dorji Wangchuck Bhutan emerges from its isolation. The country gets a parially elected parliament and it joins the United Nations in 1971. That can be considered the date of independence. In 1972 he is succeeded by Jigme Singye Wanchuck.

INTRODUCTION
I UNCONQUERED I SHABDRUNG I SPIRTUALITY I CULTURE I PARADISE I CHALLENGES I PEOPLE
It is a matter of great pride to the Bhutanese that their small kingdom was never colonised. Its ancient history, which is a mixture of the oral tradition and classical literature, tells of a largely self-sufficient population which had limited contact with the outside world until the turn of the century.
Among the earliest landmarks of Bhutanese history visible today are two seventh-century monasteries, the Kyichu Lhakhang in Paro and Jambay Lhakhang in Bumthang. Both these deeply revered monasteries have been preserved and developed over the centuries.
In the eight century Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava), established several sacred religious sites which are important places of pilgrimage for the Buddhist world today. Among them are the Kurjey Lhakhang in Bumthang and the Taktshang (Tiger's Nest) Monastery in Paro.
Another important chapter in Bhutanese history unfolded in the early part of the 13th century when the Buddhist teacher, Phajo Drugom Zhingpo, introduced the Drukpa Kagyu school of Mahayana Buddhism in the western Bhutan. Over the years many other saints and religious figures helped shape Bhutan's history and develop its religion.

103. BHUTAN
bhutan s history parallels Buddhism s following in the Himalayas and to properly understand bhutan s history one also needs to understand its religion.
http://www.iip.co.jp/bhutan/about/rekishi_e.html
The name Bhutan appears to derive from the ancient Indian term Bhotanta which means the end of the land of the Bhots. Photo by Lincoln potter B hot was the Sanskrit term for Tibetans, thus Bhutan could mean the end of the land of Tibet. It could also extend from the Sanskrit word Bhu'uttan or high land. No one seems to be sure. Ancient Tibetan writers called their fertile neighbour Lho Mon or Mon Yul, Paradise of the South or Land of the Monpas. The Bhutanese themselves refer to their country as Druk Yul or the Land of the Peaceful Dragon. Druk meaning dragon and extending from the predominant Drukpa school of Tibetan Buddhism. Bhutan's history parallels Buddhism's following in the Himalayas and to properly understand Bhutan's history one also needs to understand its religion. M ystery surrounds Bhutan's distant past, as books and papers were lost in consecutive fires at the national printing works and at Punakha Dzong in 1828 and 1832. And then a massive earthquake in 1896 and a fire in Paro Dzong destroyed all but a few of the records that outlasted the first disasters. Despite these setbacks, enough reliable information has been recorded to piece together a history which sets apart this small kingdom from others in its vicinity. B hutan was not unified under a central authority until the 17th Century, however, the religious presence in the country had been acting as a spiritual cohesion for many years. It was in 747AD that Padma Sambhava who is known as Guru Rimpoche made his legendary trip from Tibet across the mountains flying on a tigress's back. He arrived in the Paro Valley at Takstang Lakhang,Tiger's Nest. A monastery now perches precariously on the cliff's face as a permanent memory to his name. Guru Rimpoche is the father of the Tantric strain of Mahayana Buddhism practised in Bhutan. His eight manifestations are worshipped in temples throughout the kingdom and wherever he visited in the kingdom is today a pilgrimage site highly revered by Bhutanese. Guru Rimpoche is not only recognised as the father of the Nyingmapa religious school but he is also considered to be the second Buddha.

An after defeating them, he blessed them as guardians of the doctrine. Introducing Tantric Buddhism to Bhutan. Takshang or Tigers Nest in the Paro Valley is where he landed and remains one of most sacred places in Bhutan.
It is believed that the name Bhutan is derived from the Sanskrit 'Bhotant', meaning 'the end of Tibet', or from 'Bhu-uttan', meaning 'high land'. Historically the Bhutanese have refered to their country as Druk Yul, 'land of the thunder dragon'. Bhutanese refer to themselves as Drukpa people. Guru Rinpoche (Precious Master) is the father of the Drukpa Kagyu school of Tantric Mahayana Buddhism practiced in Bhutan. Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, a Tibetan lama of the Drukpa School, arrived in Bhutan in 1616 BC.

Bhutan faces up to alcohol problem
BBC News reports (31 March 2005) that alcoholic drinks have traditionally played a significant role in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. They are served at all ceremonial and religious occasions, and almost every family brews its own rice-based liquor. But now health officials say they are concerned about the increasing cases of alcoholism being reported at the national hospital in the capital, Thimphu. Bhutan In Depth
8 days RECOMMEND THIS SITE HISTORY Before the 16th century, numerous clans and noble families ruled in different valleys throughout Bhutan, quarrelling among themselves and with Tibet. This changed in 1616 with the arrival of Ngawang Namgyal, a monk of the Drukpa Kagyu school of Buddhism from Tibet. He taught throughout the region and soon established himself as the religious ruler of Bhutan with the title Shabdrung Rinpoche. He repelled attacks from rival lamas and Tibetan forces and transformed the southern valleys into a unified country called Druk Yul (Land of the Dragon). While the political system he established lasted until the beginning of the 20th century, the announcement of the Shabdrung's death in 1705 was followed by 200 years of internal conflict and political infighting. Instability lasted until 1907 when Ugyen Wangchuck was elected, by a unanimous vote of Bhutan's chiefs and principal lamas, as hereditary ruler of Bhutan. Thus the first king was crowned and the Wangchuck dynasty began. Over the following four decades, he and his heir, King Jigme Wangchuck, brought the entire country under the monarchy's direct control. Upon independence in 1947, India recognized Bhutan as a sovereign country.

Thunder Dragon in new millennium
Bhutan, known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon, carefully weighs the prospect of globalization in the 21st century, guarding against the risks of marginalization but welcoming the opportunity to benefit from increasing trade and technology transfer. The Internet and television, introduced only in 1999, open a window to the world, promising to reduce remoteness as an obstacle to wider contact and commerce. However, teachers and elders are taking no chances, warning the young against preoccupation with deleterious influences coming via satellite. Introduction A Himalayan Kingdom UNICEF in Bhutan ...
