Mystery surrounds Bhutan's distant past, as priceless irretrievable documents were lost in fires and earthquakes. In the 8th century CE, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava or second Buddha) made his legendary trip from Eastern Bhutan to Western Bhutan on the back of a flying tigress to subdue the evil spirits who hindered Buddhism. After defeating them, he blessed them as guardians of the doctrine. thus introducing Tantric Buddhism to Bhutan. Taktshang or Tigers Nest in the Paro Valley is where he landed and today it remains one of most sacred places in Bhutan.
It is believed that the name Bhutan is derived from the Sanskrit 'Bhotant', meaning 'the end of Tibet', or from 'Bhu-uttan', meaning 'high land'. Historically the Bhutanese have refered to their country as Druk Yul, 'land of the thunder dragon'. Bhutanese refer to themselves as Drukpa people.

Nepal: Zonal Administrative Divisions, 1991 THE HIMALAYAN KINGDOMS of Nepal and Bhutan share a history of influence by Tibet, China, and India, and an interlude of British colonial guidance. Although the kingdoms are not contiguous, each country is bordered by China to the north and India on its other peripheries. Both kingdoms are ruled by hereditary monarchs and are traditional societies with predominantly agricultural economies; their cultures, however, differ. Nepal's Hinduism, a legacy of India's influence, defines its culture and caste-structured society. Bhutan's Buddhist practices and culture reflect India's influence by way of Tibet. The two countries' legal systems also reflect their heritage. Nepal's judicial system blends Hindu legal and English common law traditions. Bhutan's legal system is based on Buddhist law and English common law. Nepal has existed as a kingdom centered in the Kathmandu Valley for more than 1,500 years (see

    http://www.ctf.gov.bt/history.htm
A number of stone tools and megaliths discovered suggest that Bhutan was inhabited from a relatively early date, probably around 2000 BC to 1500 BC. Although mystery surrounds the distant past of Bhutan, the known history of Bhutan begins with the introduction of Buddhism in the country. It can be gleaned from available records that the people of Bhutan followed a kind of Shamanistic faith called "Bon" prior to the advent of Buddhism in the country. Between the 8th and 17th Century AD, a number of renowned Buddhist masters from both India and Tibet visited Bhutan and left their marks in the forms of monasteries, temples, fortresses and social beliefs and values. Buddhism provides a cohesion among the people of different regions in Bhutan during the middle ages but the country was unified under the central authority of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyle only during the 17th century. Towards the end of the theocratic regime, on the 17th of December 1907, the regional Governors, the powerful Clergy, and the representatives of the people, weary of the hardship faced due to factional rivalries and unending strife, unanimously elected Ugyen Wangchuck, the Penlop of Trongsa, as the first hereditary King of Bhutan.

    History and Government
History: Existing archives trace Bhutanese history back to AD450, although many of the intervening events remain a mystery. Bhutan has never been conquered or ruled by another foreign power. Guru Rinpoche is believed to have brought Mahayana Buddhism to Bhutan from Tibet in the eighth century. It first became a coherent political entity around the 17th century, under the direction of a succession of Tibetan lamas who established an administrative and political structure over the area, relying principally on the appointment of a set of regional governors. Spiritual and temporal roles were subsequently divided among the leadership (known as dharma raja and deb raja , respectively). The UK first came into formal contact with Bhutan in the 18th century, as a result of which the East India Company made a treaty with the territory in 1774. Throughout the 19th century, a series of struggles for influence between the regional governors destabilised the country. The refugee issue also dominates relations with Bhutan’s other neighbour, Nepal, which hosts an estimated 100,000 Bhutanese refugees housed in camps in the east of the country. Most are ethnic Nepalis whose citizenship is in dispute. (The Bhutanese population is divided between two main ethnic groups – the Nepalis and the Drupka.) The Nepali government wants them to return to Bhutan; the Bhutanese refuse to take them. Talks to resolve the issue have been underway since November 2001. However, as of June 2005, these had still made no progress.

Bhutan - Origins and Early Settlement, A.D. 600-1600
Some scholars believe that during the early historical period the inhabitants were fierce mountain aborigines, the Monpa, who were of neither the Tibetan or Mongol stock that later overran northern Bhutan. The people of Monyul practiced the shamanistic Bon religion, which emphasized worship of nature and the existence of good and evil spirits. During the latter part of this period, historical legends relate that the mighty king of Monyul invaded a southern region known as the Duars, subduing the regions of modern Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar in India.
    Bhutan - Arrival of Buddhism
The introduction of Buddhism occurred in the seventh century A.D., when Tibetan king Srongtsen Gampo (reigned A.D. 627-49), a convert to Buddhism, ordered the construction of two Buddhist temples, at Bumthang in central Bhutan and at Kyichu in the Paro Valley. Buddhism replaced but did not eliminate the Bon religious practices that had also been prevalent in Tibet until the late sixth century. Instead, Buddhism absorbed Bon and its believers. As the country developed in its many fertile valleys, Buddhism matured and became a unifying element. It was Buddhist literature and chronicles that began the recorded history of Bhutan. There was no central government during this period. Instead, small independent monarchies began to develop by the early ninth century. Each was ruled by a

The purpose of this study was to assess grade eight students' attitude toward Bhutan History as an individual school subject and in relation to other school subjects. This study also explored the factors affecting students' attitude towards Bhutan History. The study population consisted of 344 students and eight history teachers in Trashigang district. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analysed in the study. The School Subject Attitude Scale (SSAS) developed by Alberta Education was used as the principal quantitative data collection instrument. This scale is designed to assess students' attitudes towards schools subjects. Demographic data was also collected on the teachers and students involved in the study. Focus group interviews were conducted with six students (three boys and three girls) randomly selected from volunteers in each school. The techniques used for analysis of the quantitative data were: descriptive statistics; analysis of variance (ANOVA); test for differences, and multiple regression. In terms of the focus group data, interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and thematic analysis was conducted on the transcripts.

Posted Jan 9, 2005, 1:07 PM ET by Annette Jamie Zeppa's "Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan" is a really well-written book about the authors stint in Bhutan teaching English. It deals with her personal experience as well as Bhutan's national issues regarding tradition, tourism, ecology, and ethnic tension.
There's also a good article on Bhutan in one of the Best American Travel Writing series, but I can't lay my hand on the exact one just now. I want to say it's the one edited by Ian Frazier, but I'm not positive. That article alone has had me craving a trip to Bhutan for a while now. Unfortunately I fall into the "budget traveller" category.
Even though I'd love to be able to go, I'd rather save my pennies for a while longer than see the country relax its closely monitored and controlled tourism.
Hope you can find time to check out Zeppa's book and the BATW article, and enjoy them as much as I did.
