Bhutan Tours People of Bhutan The people of Bhutan can be divided into four main ethnic groups - Bhutia, Sharchops, Nepali and a cluster of indigenous groups. These groups can be distinguished by language, religion, and socioeconomic characteristics. The main population is made up of Bhutia, who are direct descendants of Tibetans. They mainly live in northern and central Bhutan. They, like most Bhutanese, speak languages from the Tibeto-Burman language and practice Buddhism, which is closely related to Tibetan Buddhism. Arts, Culture and Music of Bhutan Bhutan is known for enacting religious, historical and other interesting tales through dances, wherein the dancers wear colorful wooden masks and special costumes create a splendid display of heroes, demons, animals, gods, and caricatures of common people. These dance are the most popular modes of entertainment among the people of Bhutan. Masked dances and dance dramas are held on many occasions throughout Bhutan in a year, mainly during Buddhist religious festivals. Apart from this, the people of Bhutan take keen interest in archery and competitions are held often. Flag of Bhutan The flag of Bhutan is divided diagonally from the lower hoist side corner. The upper triangle is yellow and the lower triangle is orange in colour, centered along the dividing line by a large black and white dragon facing away from the hoist side

History of Bhutan
It was in the middle ages that Buddhism blossomed in Bhutan. The Tibetan-based kagyupa school was established at the beginning of the 12th century and missionaries were sect, south to spread its teachings. The Lhapa school, a kagyupa sect, was set up in western Bhutan at the end of the 12th century and the Drukpa school (another subdivison of kagyupa) in the first half of the 13th century. For the next 500 years, disputes between the two therioes of Bhddhist practice were common. In the end, the Drukpa school reigned supreme and was even accepted in the eastern and central areas where Nyingmapa monks had previously dominated.
Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, a Tibetan lama of the Drukpa school , designed the present system of intertwined religious and secular, designed the present system of intertwined religious and secular government. He was invited to Bhutan in 1616. At that time no central authority existed and regional conflict had persisted intermittently for centuries. In his quest to unify the country , he gained the support of many powerful families of school and constructed Dzong (fortress monasteries) in the main valleys of western Bhutan.Designed to scare aggressors, the Dzong command a powerful presence over the valleys in which they are still the centers of religious and civil authority.
During the next two centuries civil wars intermittently broke out and regional penlops became increasingly more powerful. At the end of the 19th Century the penlop of Tongsa(who controlled central and eastern Bhutan) overcame his greatest rival the penlop of paro ( who controlled western Bhutan) abd was soon afterwards recognized as the overall leader of Bhutan. The penlop of Tongsa,Ugyen Wangchuck, was elected the king of Bhutan in 1907 by an assembly of representatives of the monastic community, civil servants and the people.

More... T he Kingdom of Bhutan lies in the eastern Himalayas, between Tibet to the north and the Indian territories of Assam and West Bengal to the south. The Kingdom has a total area of about 47,000 square kilometres. Located in the heart of the high Himalayan mountain range, Bhutan is a land-locked country surrounded by mountains. The sparsely populated Greater Himalayas, bounded to the north by the Tibetan plateau, reach heights of over 7,300 meters, and extend southward losing height, to form the fertile valleys of the Lesser Himalayas divided by the Wang, Sunkosh, Trongsa and Manas Rivers. Monsoon influences promote dense forestation in this region and alpine growth at higher altitudes. The cultivated Central uplands and Himalayan foothills support the majority of the population. In the south, the Daur Plain drops sharply away from the Himalayas into the large tracts of semi-tropical forest, savannah grassland and bamboo jungle. B hutan's climate ranges from tropical in the south, to temperate in the centre of the country, to cold in the north...and can be quite unpredictable. The weather can vary dramatically from place to place and equally dramatically from day to day or even within the same day. In the Thimphu and Paro valleys, winter daytime temperatures average 60 degrees Fahrenheit during clear winter days but drop well below freezing during the night. Mid December to early January can be a beautifully clear and dry time in Western Bhutan. The fluctuations are not quite so great during the summer and daytime temperature often rises to the mid-eighties in Fahrenheit.

"Existing history text books will be translated into Dzongkha to be taught in classes VII to iX from the 2006 academic session and for class VIII and X the next year." The Dzongkha development authority secretary, Dasho Sangay Wangchuk, said the education sector was the best place to work towards the national policy of improving the standard of dzongkha. It is landlocked and bordered by India on three sides, East (Sikkim), South (West Bengal and Assam), and West (Arunachal Pradesh), and by Tibet and the Greater Himalayas in the North. Although the country is roughly the size of Switzerland it has only about 1.3 million inhabitants and is therefore very sparsely populated. Bhutan is a very isolated, rugged, and extremely mountainous country with relatively few connections with the outside world. While much of this isolation is due to geographical factors it has also been self-imposed as Bhutanese authorities have, for a very long time, made it difficult for foreigners to enter the country.

Bhutan History The name Bhutan appears to derive from the Sanskrit word 'Bhotant', meaning 'the end of Tibet', or from 'Bhu-uttan', meaning 'high land'. Historically the Bhutanese have referred to their country as Druk Yul or the 'land of the thunder dragon'. Druk means dragon and extends from the predominant Drukpa school of Tibetan Buddhism. Bhutanese refer to themselves as Drukpa people.
Mystery surrounds Bhutan's distant past, as not much information is available. Bhutan was not unified under a central authority until the 17th century, although the Buddhist religion in the country had provided some sort of cohesion during the Middle Ages. It was in 747 AD that Padma Sambhava who is known as Guru Rimpoche made his legendary trip from Tibet across the mountain flying on a tigress' back. Guru Rimpoche is recognized as the founder of the Nyingmapa religious school and also considered to be the second Buddha. Many of Bhutan's most celebrated ancestors descend from the Nyingmapa School, including the ancestors of the present-day Royal family. At the end of the 19th century the Penlop of Trongsa overcame his greatest rival, the Penlop of Paro and was soon afterwards recognized as the overall leader of Bhutan. An assembly of representatives of the monastic community, civil servants and the people elected the Penlop of Trongsa, Ugyan Wangchuck, the first King of Bhutan in 1907. This monarchy has thrived ever since and the present King, His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the first King's great grandson, commands the overwhelming support of his people. After assuming the throne in 1974, the present king continued his father's policy of pragmatic development. He actively pursues industrial progress, countrywide education and medical care and ensures, at the same time, Bhutan's culture remains intact.

The name, Bhutan, appears to derive from the ancient Indian term, Bhotanta, which means the end of the land of the Bhots. Bhot was the Sanskrit term for Tibetans; thus, Bhutan could mean the end of the land of Tibet. It could also extend from the Sanskrit word, Bhutan, or high land. No one seems to be sure. Ancient Tibetan writers called their fertile neighbours Lho Mon or Mon Yul, paradise of the south or land of the monpas. The Bhutanese themselves refer to their country as Druk Yul or the land of the peaceful dragon, Druk meaning dragon and extending from the predominant Drukpa school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Bhutan was not unified under a central authority until the 17th century; however, the religious presence in the country had been acting as a spiritual cohesion for many years. Guru Rinpoche is the father of the tantric strain of Mahayana Buddhism practiced in Bhutan. His eight manifestations are worshipped throughout the kingdom, and wherever he visited in the kingdom is today a pilgrimage site highly revered by Bhutanese. Guru Rinpoche is not only recognized as the father of the Nyingmapa religious school, but he is also considered to be the second Buddha.

    Meaning and Description
Bhutan is a Buddhist state where power is shared by the king and government. The country's name in the local dialect means Land of the Dragon. In Bhutan, thunder is believed to be the voices of dragons roaring. In about 1200, a monastery was set up called the Druk (Thunder Dragon) with a sect called the Drukpas, named after it. The name and the emblem of the dragon have been associated with Bhutan ever since. The dragon on the flag is white to symbolize purity. The two colors of the flag, divided diagonally, represent spiritual and temporal power within Bhutan. The orange part of the flag represents the Drukpas monasteries and Buddhist religious practice, while the saffron yellow field denotes the secular authority of the dynasty.
