The purpose of this research was to map and account for discrepancies between the Intended and Taught Curricula in the grade six geography program in Bhutan. The principal research strategy employed was curriculum auditing. A description of the Intended Curriculum was formulated from an analysis of major curriculum documents related to the program using the conceptual framework of the Curriculum Materials Analysis System. A description of the Taught Curriculum was generated from student notebooks using a curriculum mapping procedure. Explanations accounting for the discrepancies were based on interpretations and observations made by the teachers and by a panel of Key Informants. Five major discrepancies between the Intended Curriculum and the Taught Curriculum are identified and discussed. Recommendations are provided with the aim of achieving a greater measure of alignment between the Intended and the Taught.

Bhutan's early history is steeped in mythology and remains obscure. It may have been inhabited as early as 2000 B.C., but not much was known until the introduction of Tibetan Buddhism in the 9th century A.D. when turmoil in Tibet forced many monks to flee to Bhutan. In the 12th century A.D., the Drukpa Kagyupa school was established and remains the dominant form of Buddhism in Bhutan today. The country's political history is intimately tied to its religious history and the relations among the various monastic schools and monasteries.
The consolidation of Bhutan occurred in 1616 when Ngawana Namgyal, a lama from Tibet, defeated three Tibetan invasions, subjugated rival religious schools, codified an intricate and comprehensive system of law, and established himself as ruler (shabdrung) over a system of ecclesiastical and civil administrators. After his death, infighting and civil war eroded the power of the shabdrung for the next 200 years when in 1885, Ugyen Wangchuck was able to consolidate power and cultivated closer ties with the British in India.
In 1972, the present king, Jigme Singye Wanchuck, ascended the throne at age 16. He has emphasized modern education, decentralization of governance, the development of hydroelectricity and tourism and improvements in rural developments. The current king has established an overarching development philosophy of "Gross National Happiness." It recognizes that there are many dimensions to development and that economic goals alone are not sufficient.

Bookmark this page Bhutan Vacations, Tours and Travel Guide Bhutan is a paradisiacal realm of fertile valleys surrounded by pristine glittering snow peaks. For hundreds of years, Tibetan Buddhism has flourished amid these hills. Magnificent dzongs , or monasteries, attract pilgrims from throughout the region, and impress all visitors with their imposing glory. After years of isolation, this kingdom is now slowly opening its doors to a fortunate few. Absolute Asia invites you to experience the profound peace of these mountains, and the humor and hospitality of the people who call these lands home. Wake up to the sound of monks chanting. Walk through lush high valleys, where crystal clear rivers run through fragrant groves of pines. Springtime journeys are electrified with the riotous blooms of rhododendron forests. The prime time to visit is in the spring or autumn. Moderate temperatures, with excellent views of the mountains and great opportunities for viewing flora and fauna, make this an exceptionally fine time to visit the region. The summer monsoon months can be very wet, with severe disruptions to transportation in the region. Winter can be quite pleasant, if cold, at the lower altitudes. Traveling over higher passes can be severely restricted due to winter snows. While Bhutan is changing rapidly, the accommodations in most areas are still basic. Absolute Asia uses the best available accommodations everywhere.

More... T he Kingdom of Bhutan lies in the eastern Himalayas, between Tibet to the north and the Indian territories of Assam and West Bengal to the south. The Kingdom has a total area of about 47,000 square kilometres. Located in the heart of the high Himalayan mountain range, Bhutan is a land-locked country surrounded by mountains. The sparsely populated Greater Himalayas, bounded to the north by the Tibetan plateau, reach heights of over 7,300 meters, and extend southward losing height, to form the fertile valleys of the Lesser Himalayas divided by the Wang, Sunkosh, Trongsa and Manas Rivers. Monsoon influences promote dense forestation in this region and alpine growth at higher altitudes. The cultivated Central uplands and Himalayan foothills support the majority of the population. In the south, the Daur Plain drops sharply away from the Himalayas into the large tracts of semi-tropical forest, savannah grassland and bamboo jungle. B hutan's climate ranges from tropical in the south, to temperate in the centre of the country, to cold in the north...and can be quite unpredictable. The weather can vary dramatically from place to place and equally dramatically from day to day or even within the same day. In the Thimphu and Paro valleys, winter daytime temperatures average 60 degrees Fahrenheit during clear winter days but drop well below freezing during the night. Mid December to early January can be a beautifully clear and dry time in Western Bhutan. The fluctuations are not quite so great during the summer and daytime temperature often rises to the mid-eighties in Fahrenheit.
