The People and Culture of Bhutan
Bhutan is comprised of a mosaic of different peoples who continue to live in valleys isolated from one another and the outside world by formidable mountain passes. Differing ethnic groups are also distributed according to the varying environments. It is possible to divide Bhutan's population into three broad ethnic groups, though the distinctions blur in places. Southern Bhutan is inhabited mainly by Nepalese farmers who arrived in the country at the end of the 19th century. They brought the Hindu religion with them as well as the Nepalese language, which is still spoken today over much of Southern Bhutan. There is not the same mingling of Buddhism and Hinduism as is apparent in Nepal, and the two tend to keep apart. The central Himalayan region is the home of the Drukpa people, who are of Mongoloid origin. Most breed cattle or cultivate the land, and their dwellings are spread over a wide area. The Northern Himalayan Zone, over 3,000 meters (9,000 feet), is the haunt of semi nomadic yak herdsmen. They spend most of the year in their black yak hair tents, but also possess dry-stone walled houses, where they spend the coldest months of the year and which are used to store their goods. Additives to a diet composed mainly of yak milk, cheese, butter and meat are barley and winter wheat, plus a few root vegetables grown in small fields.

The Buddhist Kingdom of the Peaceful Thunder Dragon, Bhutan, lies in the folds of the splendid mountain of the eastern Himalayas between India and China, two of the largest and most populous countries in the world. Bhutan is home to one of the world's richest natural environments and a virtually untouched and vibrant Buddhist culture. The Kingdom has over 72% of the land under forest cover that shelters several species of flora and fauna, including many rare and endangered species. Because of its rich and untouched natural heritage, Bhutan has been rightfully declared by scientists as one of the ten global "Hot Spots". The Kingdom is committed to preserving its rich natural environment with the declaration by the Royal Government at the 73rd session of the National Assembly in 1995, under the guidance of His Majesty, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, that 60% of the country will be maintained under forest cover at all times and 26% as protected area for the good of its people and the world. Despite the importance Bhutan has accorded to the preservation and promotion of its cultural heritage, its national treasures and traditions have yet to be inventoried and documented. Cultural heritage covers not only historical sites, architecture and physical artifacts but also the rich traditions of folklore, arts, crafts and sports. A large part of the country's heritage is also embedded in rich oral traditions that face the danger of disappearing and becoming lost to the world.

Somehow this land of high mountains, wooded valleys, kings, princesses and anchorites has eluded the vicissitudes that have wreaked such havoc on so many once remotes corners of the earth. It is a privilege for us to guide here. Bhutan has wisely limited the number of tourists it lets in each year. Likewise certain monasteries and regions remain closed to outsiders. Even with these restrictions there is an incredible amount of unexplored high country open or slowly opening to the world as well as many monasteries and festivals open to public viewing. For those looking for a glimpse into the world of an intact Buddhist culture-Bhutan is the sole remaining example. The Mahayana (Great Vehicle) form of Buddhism brought here by visionary Tibetan teachers over the last 1,000 years has managed to thrive and develop through the present day. CULTURAL TOUR PROGRAMMES Bhutan is a remote independent kingdom in the eastern Himalayan and the last bastion of the Tibetan Buddhist culture and religion in its purest form. Despite opening up to tourism in the late "70's) it has managed to minimize the effect of outside influences and the country is virtually untouched, in terms of the environment, religion, architecture and lifestyle. Bhutan has the youngest reigning monarch in the world. King Jigme Singye wangchuck, who guards Bhutan's culture and national identity fiercely. It is a remarkable country and Loyal offers the opportunity to see not only Bhutan's exquisite Himalayan scenery but to experience its rich and ancient traditions in Thimphu. The capital and Paro, its second largest town. Few people have the privilege of experiencing Bhutan and in the light of the fragility of such a small nation and traditional culture in this age of superpowers this slice of an old world may, in the future, be denied us. Festival Schedules Druk Air Schedules ... Travel Tips Architecture of Bhutan Culture and Traditions Text and Photographs by Robert Dompnier The main features of Bhutanese architecture are the result primarily of natural conditions, and especially the climate. In the countries situated to the north of the Himalayan range, such as Tibet or Ladakh, the long severe winters and cold continental winds have produced an arid landscape with only sparse vegetation. In contrast, those to the south, such as Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan, have much milder climates with abundant rainfall, especially during the summer monsoon. This particular climate has produced Alpine-type vegetation, with forests containing many species of trees such as oak, rhododendron, cypress, juniper, pine and fir.... Naturally, this plentiful supply of timber has given birth to an architecture in which wood plays a major role. Shingle roofs and half-timbering are commonplace, as the raw materials are easy to find. But in addition to the climate and environment, a human factor must also be stressed, and that is that the minds of the Bhutanese people seem to have been influenced by their friendlier surroundings to create a gentler and more elegant architecture than in Tibet.
