Bhutan is the only country to maintain Mahayana Buddhism in its Tantric Vajrayana form as the official religion. The main practicing schools are the state sponsored Drukpa Kagyupa and the Nyingmapa. Buddhism transects all strata of society, underpinning multiple aspects of the culture. Indeed, religion is the focal point for the arts, festivals and a considerably above average number of individuals. The presence of so many monasteries, temples and stupas, monks and tulkus (reincarnations of high lamas) is indicative of the overarching role religion plays throughout the nation. Although the Shabdrung is regarded as the founder of the nation, the secular realm has achieved an unprecedented degree of unity under the influential guidance of a Twentieth Century monarchy. Within a cultural context where the spiritual and temporal spheres are intimately connected, political leadership remains interpreted as divinely determined. The royal family traces its roots to the great Sixteenth Century saint Pema Lingpa, and the present monarch still enjoys a god-like status throughout much of his Kingdom. The Forth King Jigme Singye Wangchuck as the head of state now rules the Kingdom, with the throne retaining its position as the fulcrum of the political system.

Bhutan is a landlocked mountain kingdom roughly the size of Switzerland, in the eastern Himalayas. With a population of 600,000 spread over 46,000 sq km. Bhutan is the last unspoiled Himalayan kingdom often known as Shangri-La. For a country of its size, Bhutan is a land of spectacular contrasts and stunning beauty. The southern foothills, at an altitude of 1,000 ft to 4,500 ft are covered by dense tropical forest, which abounds with wildlife. These regions are mostly inhabitated by Lhotsampas (Nepalese immigrants who are given Bhutanese citizens nationally) and most of them are agriculture workers. It was the mighty Himalayas, which protected Bhutan from the rest of the world and left the kingdom blissfully untouched. The Drukpa Kagyu School of Mahayana Buddhism provided the essence of a rich culture and a fascinating history. The Bhutanese people protected this sacred heritage and unique identity for centuries by choosing to remain shrouded deeply in a jealously guarded isolation.

HISTORY:
Mystery surrounds Bhutan's distant past, as priceless irretrievable documents were lost in fires and earthquakes. In the 18th century AD, Guru Padma Sambhava made his legendary trip from Tibet to Bhutan on the back of a flying tigress. He meditated at Taktsang, Tiger's Nest, in the Paro Valley.
Guru Rinpoche (Precious Master) is the father of the Tantric strain of Mahayana Buddhism practiced in Bhutan Sgabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, a tibetan lama of the Drukpa School, arrived in Bhutan in1616. He introduced the present dual system of religious and secular government. Shabdrung unified the country, and established himself as the country's supreme leader and vested civil power in a high officer known as the Druk Desi. Religious affairs were charged to another leader, the Je Khenpo. For two centuries following Shabdrung's demise, civil wars intermittently broke out, and the regional penlops (governors) became increasingly more powerful. This ended when an assembly of representa1tives of the monastic community , civil servants and the people, elected the Penlop of Trongsa, Ugen Wangchuck, the First King of Bhutan in 1907. The monarchy has thrived ever since, and the present Fourth King, His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, commands the overwhelming support for his people.

Many countries proclaim the uniqueness of their traditions, which often are artificially preserved for tourists only. But in Bhutan, tradition is real: The visitors can see it, feel it. In a world where a thick cloak of globalization has all but smothered distinctive heritages, this self-reliant kingdom proudly stands alone. Arts, ceremonies and festivals in Bhutan are not remnants of a bygone age. Arts and crafts are practised and, ceremonies and festivals are performed because they continue to have a religious and spiritual significance. As such, they are the manifestations of a living culture.
Important Note
During the busy season it is difficult to secure reservations on Druk Air and in Hotels in Paro, Thimphu, Wangdi Phodrang, Tongsa and Bumthang. The farther in advance that you book, the more likely it is that we can confirm the reservation you choose.
The rule of thumb is: Book as far in advance as possible, but don't hesitate to contact us at the last minute if free time suddenly comes your way.

The official estimate of Bhutan's population in 1990 was about 600,000 but other sources estimate the population for 2000 was just under 2 million. Those living in Bhutan of Nepali origin have been excluded from the official census since 1990 which results in such a large discrepancy in population numbers. Bhutan has four major ethic groups: Bhutia, Sharchops, Nepali, and other indigenous groups. The Bhutia, who are descended from Tibetans, live in the central and northern regions of Bhutan. This ethnic group basically dominates politics in Bhutan particularly with it's contribution of government officials and monks that come from it.

The Vail Symposium is flying you to a tiny jewel in the Himalayas - Bhutan - a country where Buddhism is the way of life and the endangered snow leopard still safely roams through dense forests. This figurative flight lands at Donovan Pavilion in West Vail at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, and Bhutan native Sonam Jatso will be your guide. Jatso is founder of Insiders' Bhutan, a travel company. He will talk about the soul of Bhutan, explain how you can travel there and discuss what unique trips he offers to the Asian country. Bhutan's government practices controlled tourism, only allowing about 6,000 tourists a year to enter the country. This policy has preserved Bhutan's culture and tradition. In 1992, however, the government privatized tourism, and many travel companies popped up locally.

The Road Less Traveled Discovering Bhutan
by Anna Stewart Inside Taktsang Monastery, perched on the very edge of a cliff about 10,000 feet high, a young boy sneaks away from his mother and reaches for my hand. "Please Madam, may I show you Guru Rimpoche's eye?" He brings me around the corner, where an eye is carved into the rock. He smiles at me. This is his turf. We were in Bhutan; a tiny Buddhist nation perched on the eastern edge of the Himalayas. It holds a strategic place between India and China. Considered to be one of the least developed nations in the world, it is a country in which no citizen goes hungry. The first king of Bhutan was crowned in the early 1900s. The present monarch, His Majesty King Jigme Singye Wangchuck opened Bhutan to the world in 1974. I first heard of Bhutan as the country where the king likes to play basketball. He allowed foreigners in the country so that he could shoot hoops with them. He doesn't play much anymore with all his royal duties, four wives, and struggles with retaining Bhutan's ethnic purity. That's the official explanation, but perhaps he just got tired of always winning. The king, like his government, was educated abroad and speaks fluent English, but is fervently in favor of maintaining cultural traditions. The King and his classmates who run the nation want to protect Bhutan's culture, resources and way of life.
