Security Issues in Assam Travel across the Assam/Bhutan border is discouraged due to security problems posed by Indian separatist groups such as the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) who are seeking their own independent homeland. Culture
There are three main ethnic groups in Bhutan: the Sharchop in the east, whose origins can be traced back to the tribes of northern Burma and northeast India; the Ngalops in the west, who migrated from Tibet and introduced Buddhism to Bhutan; and the Lhotsampas in the south, who are of Nepali origin. The population of Bhutan is roughly 700,000. Though there are several large towns in Bhutan, such as the capital, Thimphu, most of the people are farmers and live in small rural villages. Many of the villages are isolated and can be reached only on foot. As the younger generation becomes more educated, however, many of them are leaving the villages and migrating to the larger towns to find office jobs. The official language in Bhutan is Dzongkha, though many regions have retained their own dialects due to their isolation. English is the medium of instruction in Bhutan, and it is widely spoken by those who have received education, especially those in urban areas. Bhutan's official religion is the Tantric form of Mahayana Buddhism, and it plays an important role in Bhutanese society and development. There are temples in most villages and religious structures along the roads and trails, and you will see prayer flags in abundance on the hills and high passes. Many Bhutanese homes have a special area containing a small shrine.

Click here for info Many countries proclaim the uniqueness of their traditions, which often are artificially preserved for tourists only. But in Bhutan, tradition is real: The visitors can see it, feel it. In a world where a thick cloak of globalization has all but smothered distinctive heritages, this self-reliant kingdom proudly stands alone. Arts, ceremonies and festivals in Bhutan are not remnants of a bygone age. Arts and crafts are practised and, ceremonies and festivals are performed because they continue to have a religious and spiritual significance. As such, they are the manifestations of a living culture. Our Bhutanese guide with in-depth knowledge of local culture will help you to experience and understand the authentic Bhutanese way of life. Drive from one valley town to another visiting temples, monasteries, dzongs, isolated villages, and the people. This trip is a wonderful immersion into Bhutanese culture, where daily life is itself a form of art.

http://www.bhutantashitours.com/htm/ttt_culture_art.htm
Back to Home Feedback Enquiry Contact Us Until the closing of the border with Tibet in 1959, the High Himalayas provided easy access in several places with certain passes open even in winter. There were numerous cultural and economical exchanges between the two countries going all the way back to the seventh century.
On the whole the Bhutanese are known to have religiously guarded their culture from outside influence. During festival times, dancers in brilliant silk costumes re-enact legendary events accompanied by blaring horns, booming drums and clashing cymbals as they perform to large audiences. Certain dances require the participants to wear heavy masks. Amongst the dancers the atsaras or clowns with their expressive masks and postures provide a welcome counterpoint to the formalised religious dances. They confront the monks and within prescribed limits mock them. In a country where sacred matters are treated with the highest respect only the atsaras are allowed to make fun of religion.
Art and painting are the important aspects of Bhutanese culture and they depict the spiritual depth of Bhutanese life. Painters use vegetable dyes to give their work the subtle beauty and warmth. The work itself is done on statues, murals or the renowned thangkas. A Bhutanese does not view a painting or a sculpture as a work of art but as a religious work. The rules of iconography are firmly established and must be scrupulously respected. Each deity has a colour and special attributes that cannot be changed without altering the meaning and religious function. The thangkas are not hung permanently in the temples but are kept rolled up in boxes and only displayed during important ceremonies.
