Oh-Oh-O'Charley's!
Hot casual chain boosts beverage sales with promotions and innovation
BY SARAH MINASIAN W hen the Nashville-based O'Charley's chain rolled out their new drink menu last year, a key part of the initiative targeted the growing American interest in wine. Specifically, company beverage professionals wanted to provide their wine drinking customers with a finer glass, so they upgraded to a 12-ounce wine glass designed to hold a 6-ounce pour. The new wine glass is etched with the O'Charley's logo, which also cleverly helps bartenders hit their mark every time: right in the center of the etched logo is the six-ounce pour line. It's that sort of thinking which has helped the chain grow, and gain awards like the Cheers 2004 Award for Beverage Excellence for their non-alcohol beverage program, specifically their success with a smoothie program. "We do very well with our smoothie sales - when our drink menu first came out we actually doubled smoothie sales when we first started featuring them," says beverage manager Colleen Brennan, who believes non-alcohol programs like these are great fits for the O'Charley's concept. O'Charley's also offers unlimited free refills on soft drinks, including coffee and tea. Despite the freebies, their non-alcohol beverages account for 10% of total sales. (Beverage alcohol sales account for approximately 9.2 % of total sales.)

Foster’s announces take over offer for Southcorp
    Melbourne, 17 January 2005
On 13 January 2005, Foster’s Group Limited ("Foster’s" or "the Group") announced the purchase of an 18.8% interest in Southcorp Limited ("Southcorp") from Southcorp’s largest shareholder, Reline Investments Pty Ltd ("Reline"), the Oatley family’s investment vehicle, for A$4.17 per share in cash, valuing the stake at A$584 million. Further details of the purchase are set out in the Substantial Holder Notice lodged on 14 January 2005. At the time of the announcement of the purchase both Foster’s and Southcorp sought from the ASX and were granted a trading halt pending an announcement. During the course of 14 to 17 January 2005, various discussions were held between representatives of Foster’s and Southcorp. The purpose of those discussions was to enable the Foster’s representatives to present the details of its proposal to the Southcorp Board and to seek Board support for the proposed takeover bid. These discussions proceeded amicably but no agreement was reached. Foster’s today announced that it intends to launch a conditional off-market takeover offer ("Offer") for the shares in Southcorp that it does not already own at a price of A$4.17 per share in cash. The sale price agreed with the Oatley family is extended to all Southcorp shareholders and values 100% of the shares in Southcorp at A$3.1 billion.

70 Years of Industry Leadership
The Repeal of Prohibition had been in effect for just over a year when a publication called debuted in beverage alcohol outlets across the U.S. Its purpose was to provide a service to the retail trade by addressing a wide range of issues critical to the business of selling beverage alcohol product. Indeed, the editorial in the January 1935 issue was titled, "Successful Merchandising," an area of focus that is no less important to retailers today. In the past 70 years, the magazine has gone through a number of evolutionary steps, as has the industry it covers. By the 1950s, the magazine was simply called Liquor Store , a title that remained until the late 1980s. By then, it was obvious that the American consumer had changed and so had the beverage alcohol retailer, who, unless prohibited by state law, had expanded his product selection beyond wine, beer and spirits. With that in mind, the magazine's name was changed to Beverage Dynamics , primarily to reflect the increasingly "dynamic" nature of the beverage alcohol industry.

Fitness, health and beauty are the underlying themes spotlighted by the beverage companies. In a Global drinks market where alcoholic drinks are in overall decline (although with some variation between geographic markets and product sectors), the need for new products is pertinent. In the non-alcohol drinks sector, the situation is slightly different, with a continued growth trend seen across all segments. The industry is increasingly developing diverse beverage concepts combining low alcohol and non-alcohol drinks.

1998 State of the Industry Highlights Report
A New and Better "SOI"
NACS members will benefit from an enhanced industry performance and benchmarking report this year. The 1998 State of the Industry (SOI) report features the most comprehensive industry data available to date and includes new sections on foodservice and technology usage. To more precisely measure foodservice as distinct from in-store merchandise sales, foodservice has been separated in several data sets. Also strengthening this year's report is the use of new industry merchandise and foodservice categories. These categories were established by NACS in 1997 to improve industrywide ability to consistently measure category performance. A total of 30 categories are reported in the 1998 SOI, plus motor fuels. While these new categories reflect changes from previous SOIs and, therefore, preclude previous year comparisons, they do lay the groundwork for more detailed reporting and analysis of the industry's performance inside the store, benefiting both retailers and suppliers.
