History Bermuda takes its name from the Spanish sea captain Juan de Bermºdez, who sighted the uninhabited islands around 1503. The Spanish did not claim the islands, but they soon became an important navigational landmark for galleons crossing the Atlantic between Spain and the New World. Since Bermuda is surrounded by dangerous reefs, nautical misadventures cast the Spanish ashore on several occasions and littered the sea bed with enough booty for some people to consider scuba diving more than a recreational sport. In 1609 Admiral Sir George Somers was en route from England with supplies for the recent British settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, when his ship, Sea Venture , was wrecked off Bermuda. Finding it a rather pleasant place to be washed up, the admiral built replacement ships of fine Bermuda cedar, sailed off and left a couple of men behind to establish a British claim to the islands. The experience of these temporary British castaways is thought to have inspired Shakespeare to write The Tempest . Somers returned to Bermuda later that same year but died soon after arrival. The British renamed Bermuda the Somers Islands in honor of the admiral, but the name failed to stick.

A colourful world that is, at once, exotic, historic and glamorous
Any map reveals Mexico and the islands of the Caribbean as the links between north and south, old and new. As crossroads, they have cultural riches much greater than their size suggests. Standing sun drenched in warm tropical breezes, this is a world at once exotic, historic, and glamorous, and it offers travel facilities to match.
Caribbean - vibrant colours and cultures Nearby is the diverse array of small nations loosely called the Caribbean. With their beaches, jungles, crystal waters, and vibrant cultures, they are close to paradise on earth. Each island has its own wildlife, history and culture. On some, cricket rules the summer months, while others are French or Spanish speaking. Whether your fantasies are spiced with rum cocktails, smugglers' haunts, square rigged sailing ships, hidden coves, or vibrant nightlife you'll find it in the resorts of the Caribbean. The Deadliest, Costliest, and Most Intense United States Hurricanes from 1900 to 2000

Digging into Hurricanes
By Michael Carlowicz
From Woods Hole Currents, Fall 2002 21 SEPTEMBER 1938 category 3 M ost hurricane researchers look at the atmosphere to study their subjects. Some look in the history archives. Jeff Donnelly looks in the mud. A sediment core allows Donnelly to chronicle the landfall of historic hurricanes, such as the 1635, 1938, and 1954 storms that struck New England.(Photo courtesy of Jeff Donnelly) Webb and Donnelly were funded by RPI to help prove that you could find hurricanes in the coastal geologic record. The fieldwork began at Succotash Marsh (near Kingston, RI) because it sits behind a barrier beach that protects it from constant changes along the surf line. Sifting through the sediments, Donnelly found layers of sand mixed between peat. That sand, he surmised, must have been washed into the marsh by great storms. Essentially, a hurricane or Nor'easter would have had to wash sand from the shoreline all the way into the back bay. And it would have to be a pretty potent storm to move sand that far, over dunes and other coastal formations. (Illustration by Jayne Doucette) 3 SEPTEMBER 1821 category 3 hurricane. It was the only time in recorded history that New York took a direct hit from an intense hurricane.

A HISTORY OF THE NORTH AMERICAN BLUEBIRD SOCIETY
This document is currently under review. Mary Dougherty Janetatos
Executive Director
May 27, 1996 We actually tried not to found the North American Bluebird Society! In the spring of 1977, Dr. Lawrence Zeleny, bluebird activist and author (The Bluebird: How You Can Help Its Fight for Survival, 1976, Indiana University Press) and I, president of the Audubon Naturalist Society of the Central Atlantic States (ANS), Chevy Chase, Maryland, journeyed to New York City to meet with the executive director of the National Audubon Society (NAS). Although cordial, the meeting did not produce the desired resultsupport for a national bluebird preservation effort.
Three meetings for bluebird enthusiasts were scheduled at ANS' Woodend headquarters. Organizations represented were ANS, the Prince George's County Chapter of NAS, and the Virginia Society of Ornithology. Speaking for ANS was Bob Lavell, who officially stated that, as a regional organization, they could not lead a continent wide effort on behalf of bluebird conservation. Delos C. "Chuck" Dupree, at that time an ANS board member, made a strong case for starting a new group to promote the conservation of bluebirds and other native cavity nesters. Another strong proponent of a new organization was Bob Patterson, president of the Prince George's County Chapter, NAS.

History
The origins of Catlin Group Limited date back to 1984 when Catlin Underwriting Agencies Limited (CUAL) was established by Stephen Catlin to manage newly formed Lloyd's marine Syndicate 1003, which commenced underwriting for the 1985 year of account on behalf of capital provided by traditional Lloyd's Names. In 2001 Catlin saw an opportunity to expand its capital base and achieve attractive returns on capital across most classes of business, given the favourable insurance pricing and underwriting environment. The Group raised $482 million in equity capital through the sale of equity interests in Catlin Group Limited to a consortium of private investors in two separate tranches: $375 million on 4 July 2002 and $107 million on 13 November 2002. This additional capital was used to fund the Group's establishment of its corporate underwriting platforms, to purchase the entire capacity of Syndicate 1003 from external capital providers and to increase the underwriting capacity of the Catlin Syndicate. In December 2003 the Group received FSA approval to establish Catlin UK (the UK branch of Catlin Insurance Company Ltd.) and began to underwrite through this third platform in January 2004. Catlin UK targets new opportunities in the market for UK small and medium-sized commercial risks. It also writes other classes of business written by the Catlin Syndicate. In March 2005 the FSA approved the establishment of Catlin Insurance Company (UK) Ltd as a sybsidiary of Catlin Insurance Company Ltd. The new company will operate under the Catlin UK banner. As a subsidiary of CICL, Catlin UK is now able to underwrite business in all meber nations of the European Ecomonic Area.
