If you are Bermudian you should not need a work permit, if you were born in Bermuda, have a Bermudian parent, are married to a Bermudian, or have some other close tie to the island you would want to contact the Bermuda Department of Immigration to determine your rights. Work permits are normally issued only for job categories that have a recognized shortage of available Bermudians. Work permits are normally issued to the employer not directly to the employee, so the first step is to have a prospective employer. GOVERNMENT Bermuda is the oldest self-governing overseas territory in the British Commonwealth and has a great degree of internal autonomy. Its 1968 constitution provided the island with formal responsibility for internal self-government, while the British Government retained responsibility for external affairs, defense, and security. The Bermudian Government is always consulted on any international negotiations affecting the territory. Bermuda participates, through British delegations, in the UN and some of its specialized and related agencies. Government Structure
Queen Elizabeth II is head of state and is represented in Bermuda by a governor, whom she appoints. Internally, Bermuda has a parliamentary system of government. The premier is head of government and leader of the majority party in the House of Assembly. The cabinet is composed of 14 members selected by the premier from among members of the House of Assembly and the Senate. The 40-member House is elected from 20 electoral districts (two representatives from each district) for a term not to exceed 5 ears. The Senate, or reviewing house, serves concurrently with the House and has 11 membersfive appointed by the governor in consultation with the premier, three by the opposition leader, and three at the governor's discretion.

Home Bermuda Government parliamentary British overseas territory with internal self-government Definition
This entry gives the basic form of government. Definitions of the major governmental terms are as follows:
Anarchy - a condition of lawlessness or political disorder brought about by the absence of governmental authority.
Commonwealth - a nation, state, or other political entity founded on law and united by a compact of the people for the common good.
Communism - a system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single - often authoritarian - party holds power; state controls are imposed with the elimination of private ownership of property or capital while claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people (i.e., a classless society).
Confederacy (Confederation) - a union by compact or treaty between states, provinces, or territories, that creates a central government with limited powers; the constituent entities retain supreme authority over all matters except those delegated to the central government.
Constitutional - a government by or operating under an authoritative document (constitution) that sets forth the system of fundamental laws and principles that determines the nature, functions, and limits of that government.

    INTRODUCTION
Background: Bermuda was first settled in 1609 by shipwrecked English colonists headed for Virginia. Tourism to the island to escape North American winters first developed in Victorian times. Tourism continues to be important to the island's economy, although international business has overtaken it in recent years. Bermuda has developed into a highly successful offshore financial center. A referendum on independence was soundly defeated in 1995. TOP OF PAGE
