Boat groundings have destroyed thousands of square meters of coral reef in Bermuda. There are only two navigable approaches to the islands and several oil tankers have gone aground on the reef. An investment in improved navigational markers would be helpful in preventing such accidents.

    Geography
Bermuda is one of the most geographically isolated places in the world. There are some 200 islands in Bermuda with a total area of 54 sq. km. Great Bermuda, the main island, is larger than the rest of the islands combined. Only about 20 of the islands are inhabited. Seven of these are connected by bridges and causeways. Bermuda is believed to rest on the peaks of a volcanic mountain rising steeply from the ocean bottom to about 60 meters below the surface. Above this level the islands consist mainly of limestone formed by sea shells and corals. History
The Bermuda islands were sighted by a Spanish sea captain, Juan de Bermudez in 1503 after whom the island is named. However it was the British admiral Sir George Somers who established a claim to these islands in 1609. Three years later 60 settlers established a permanent colony on the islands. The shallow top soil limited agriculture and the lack of water prevented commercial crops like sugar cane from being introduced. The settlers soon became reliant on food imports from the American colonies. Slaves were first introduced in 1616 most of them brought from Africa though some were American Indians. They lived in degrading conditions but were generally employed as domestic servants or trades people rather than agricultural laborers. When slavery was abolished 5000 of the 9000 people living in Bermuda were registered on the census as black or colored. In 1849 Portuguese agricultural workers were brought to Bermuda on contract. Throughout the rest of the century the Portuguese population grew with the overwhelming majority continuing to be engaged in subsistence farming.

Email: info@bic.bm Our fish hook shaped island, or rather collection of islands, is often confused with our Caribbean neighbors who are actually over a 1000 miles to the South. Bermuda is actually the southern edge of the top of a submerged mountain that was once an active volcano millions of years ago. Located approximately 600 miles of the coast of cape Hatteras, visitors are surprised to discover that a single short plane flight from most of the East Coast gateway cities is all that is required to arrive in sunny Bermuda. There are also direct flights from Canada and Europe. The ring of coral reefs surrounding the principal islands has the distinction of being the northernmost living coral reef formations in the northern hemisphere. It was this deadly ring of reefs that gave Bermuda a reputation as a graveyard of ships, and there was great truth to this... over 300 known shipwrecks are scattered over the coral reefs that surround us. Divers from all over the world enjoy exploring these wrecks that are often situated in less than 30 feet of water. The colorful corals and abundant marine life are an added incentive to divers, snorkellers and glass bottom boat cruisers.

    Bermuda
If Spanish sea captain Juan de Bermudez had claimed these uninhabited islands when he first sighted them back in 1503, the six principal islands of Bermuda might be known for an entirely different cultural flavor than they are today. But as it happened, British Admiral Sir George Somers rediscovered the islands a hundred years later, kicking off nearly four centuries of British rule that have left a legacy of tidy cottages, traffic-guiding bobbies, cricket matches and pint-pouring pubs.
The most common mistake made by most travelers bound for the beautiful pink-beached islands is that they mentally misplace Bermuda a thousand miles south in the Caribbean. In fact, the eight main islands (collectively known as "the island") and 120 other assorted volcanic fragments that form this 21-square-mile fishhook archipelago aren't in the Caribbean at all, but 600 nautical miles off the coast of North Carolina in the Atlantic Ocean.
