Known as the Island of Bermuda, it is in reality a string of over 100 islands. In reality, Bermuda is the second most remote island in the world - the nearest point of land being to the west, at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, 650 miles (1046 km) away. New York City is 750 miles (1215 km) to the northwest and London is 3,460 miles (5568 km) to the northeast.

I wanted to get off this extra log before leaving tomorrow morning. The weather has settled down and the heavy weather predicted did not really materialize. Oh well, we should have a good crossing. We plan to go the northern route (ie. up to 40 north then across) as the winds are supposed to be better at this time with a marginally better chance, though, of gales and icebergs. We could actually leave today, but there is a "potluck supper" planned for tonight across on Hen Island. So we will stay for it. We plan to clear customs tonight, and when we get back from the potluck we will bring the dinghy on board, lash everything down, and be prepared for sea so we can leave first thing in the morning. There will be several boats leaving around the same time, though some are leaving today.
Yesterday we went up to the " Bermuda Harbour Radio " station high up on a hill overlooking St. George's. It is a modern communications and rescue centre facility built on old Fort George, complete with two large 11 inch Rifled Muzzle Loader cannon, outside a 50-foot deep dry, rectangular moat. The station was atop the "keep" overlooking St George's, with only a narrow walkway crossing the moat for access. We enjoyed the visit. The station had sophisticated radars, radios, satellite communications and other modern technology. The radars could track vessels approaching Bermuda and when noted would automatically calculate range, bearing, course, speed, and latitude and longitude. Any radio transmissions could also be triangulated from two other receivers and the latitude and longitude immediately determined as well.

    http://www.bermudayp.com/islp-geography.html
After the birth of the Atlantic Ocean, when the continents of North America and Europe/Asia began moving apart some 110 million years ago, the Bermuda Seamount was formed by a volcanic hot spot. Further volcanic activity 35 million years ago, built a small mountain which was then eroded by wind and waves to form a low lying atoll. During the Pleistocene era with its glacial and inter-glacial periods and fluctuating sea levels, Bermuda was built up with sediment from corals, forams and mollusks that colonised the reefs. Wind and waves broke it down creating windblown dunes which rain solidified into limestone. The waters are clean and clear with a thriving reef system giving shelter to sea fans and whips, corals and colourful fish. And while sharks do inhabit Bermuda waters, the last shark bite was about 50 years ago when a man stood on a shark in shallow water and it took offense. http://library.thinkquest.org/J002228F/Geography/bermuda_geography.htm
The Bermuda Triangle is a region of 440,000 square miles. It is within the boundaries of the Atlantic Ocean. The corners of the Triangle are at the southern Virginia Coast, the Bermuda Islands and the Florida Keys. Some say it is in different places. Others say it is a rectangle! It is unclear where the boundaries should be. The Bermuda Triangle has some of the deepest trenches in the world, which can sink ships with their whirlpools. Speaking of whirlpools, the Sargasso Sea is like a big whirlpool, and is said to have many disappearances just like the Bermuda Triangle. Some of the Sargasso Sea (which is in the Atlantic Ocean close to Bermuda) flows into the Triangle. It is located somewhere along the coast of North America. It has caused problems for sailors because it has little wind. This sea has less rain, clouds and wind than the rest of the Atlantic Ocean. Nine other areas are the same as the Triangle in shape and location (near the Equator). Disappearances occur in these places, also. Some of them are very busy waterways like the Bermuda Triangle. One of these locations is in Japan, and another between the Azores and Iceland.
