Bermuda first appeared on a map as early as 1511, but the treacherous ring of coral reefs surrounding the Island ripped into the hulls of many unfortunate ships. Because of the disastrous fate of so many vessels, frightening stories of maritime travel kept seafarers away from Bermuda’s shores, and it was referred to as “The isle of Devils.”
In 1609, an English vessel named the Sea Venture was bound for the American colonies when a storm foundered the ship on the reefs beyond the east end of Bermuda. Eventually, all but two of the crew and passengers made it to Jamestown, Virginia. But soon the Island was claimed for the Crown of England, and in 1612, the Plough landed with the first settlers. And the rest is history, as they say, and it is all here in rich abundance from batteries and redoubts, to sunken ships just below the surface, and cedar-fitted churches. A lively and colourful African heritage
Bermuda was touched by the blight of slavery, too. And the slaves who helped establish the economy of the Island cherished their African heritage and traditions. Today, African dance and music still thrives and is celebrated in many of Bermuda’s grand festivals.

    Back to Arts and Culture
    Bermuda's Cedar Carvers
For centuries, from the very beginning of Bermuda's colonization, craftsmen have been shaping juniperus bermudiana (the Bermuda cedar) to use as furniture. Even now there are exquisite tables and chairs, staircases and banisters, doors and moldings that can be traced back to the 19th century, and in some instances, the 1700s. What haven't come down through the centuries though, are artistic carvings, and it almost begs the question as to why not. Certainly the skill of the artisans could not have been directed only toward the functional. Surely there must have been a man or woman who took this most difficult of woods to work with and brought some artistic spirit to life. But there is nothing today to show that any such pieces have survived. However, as we approach the end of the century, cedar carvers have and are continuing to leave a mark on Bermuda's cultural pages. Interpretations of subject matter range from realism to abstraction. Some of the carvings are architectonic in nature and are not dissimilar to some African carvings. This is actually not too unusual. In the world of sculpture, wood is principally associated with African art and certain sculptures of the medieval period. In this century Henry Moore, who was fascinated with Mexican and African art, manipulated the special characteristics, its vertical graining and organic nature. Similarly, a handful of local carvers have learned to manipulate the tricky and eccentric grain of the Bermuda cedar, creating splendid works of art. Leading the world of the cedar carver is Chesley Trott, who has a studio at the Dockyard. His works are frequently imitated by young carvers.

    Arts Organizations
A t first glance it might appear the art world here is so small that the entire picture could be set in a modest frame. But several Bermudian artists have established reputations abroad, and their push for excellence and recognition serves as an inspiration to our dancers and musicians. Almost quietly, many are carving local niches as a springboard for jumping "the pond" local vernacular for the surrounding ocean. The rivalry within the Bermuda art community is strong, creating both an upside and downside. Competition is keen, but, says one dance school head, the student community is often deprived of the kind of exchange that allows them to learn from each other. Art galleries and studios are generally owned and run by artists who use them to promote their own works. Often the gallery or studio is a room or two in the artist's home. Three artists who have carved solid reputations with their art are Bruce Stuart, president of the Bermuda Society of Arts; Elizabeth Mulderig whose "onion" paintings of famous Bermudians are on exhibit at the Masterworks Gallery in Somerset; and Graham Foster whose interpretation of the ubiquitous Bermudian home is refreshingly unique. Each year most arts organizations have a major exhibition or performance, allowing established and new talent a showcase opportunity.

Culture of Bermuda. When people think of Bermuda, they will usually think of Great Britain and the British. The culture is a mixture of British and African heritages. The British influences predominate in institutions, including the form of government, educational system and legal framework. Judges still wear powdered wigs, bobbies direct traffic, cricket is the most popular sport and a pint of ale at the local pub is a common way to cap off a day's work. English is spoken on Bermuda and the majority of islanders are Christian. The African influence is more subtle but can be found in island music and dance - particularly in music of African origin, which comes via the West Indies, such as reggae and calypso, and also in the rhythm of Gombey dancers.
The Gombey dancing is the most interesting art form unique to Bermuda. While it has roots in West African tribal music, Gombey dancing also incorporates influences from Christian missionaries, the British military and, most visibly, American Indians, from whom the Gombey dancers have adapted their costumes. To the uninitiated, the Gombey dancers may just look like wildly costumed characters jumping up and down to loud music, but in fact the dancing is carefully choreographed to specific rhythms and often portrays biblical stories. The dancers traditionally take to the streets on Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
