Bermuda, like every island or country in the Western Hemisphere was first inhabited by the Indians. The history of them has been greatly missing and only mentions the hostile relations between them and the Virginia Company. Geologists have concluded that Bermuda came into existence after a volcanic eruption over one hundred million years ago. Even though the soil is of volcanic formation, yet it is surrounded by coral reefs that protect it from natural erosion. There is a steep drop off beyond the coral reefs as the water is about three miles deep. The water within the coral reefs area is fairly calm, dreamily blue-green and transparent, and the beaches have a lovely pink cast.

The Culture of Bermuda reflects the heritage of its people, who are of African and European descent. Although Bermuda is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom , there are also strong historical links with the United States Canada , and the former British colonies in the Caribbean To visitors from the United States , Bermudians seem British in their customs: playing cricket driving on the left ; and having Queen Elizabeth II on their banknotes, while for British visitors, Bermuda seems more North American: the currency is the dollar, on par with the US Dollar television comes from the US; while Bermudian English sounds similar to American English . While in the US or Britain, "Bermuda shorts" are considered casual dress, while in Bermuda they are considered to be formal attire, and are worn with a jacket and tie. Bermudians may seem more conservative than people in the UK or North America, and more concerned with etiquette . For example, to ask somebody directions in Bermuda, without first saying 'good morning' or 'good afternoon' is considered to be abrupt and rude. This causes misunderstandings and embarrassment on the part of many US or British visitors, for whom this is perfectly normal, and who intend no offence. Topless sunbathing is not simply frowned upon as immodest, it is against the law. However, Bermudians can also be tolerant of behaviour that would be considered eccentric elsewhere. One example is

By James Whittaker

(Sports from 2005-07-27 Edition)
When Saleem Mukuddem was playing cricket in South Africa he admits a World Cup place was so far out of his reach it did not even feature in his dreams.
Now after helping Bermuda to unprecedented success at the ICC Trophy in Ireland he is on the verge of lining up against some of his heroes, and possibly his countrymen.
Mukuddem, eligible to play for Bermuda because he has lived in the country for more than four years, said moving to the island had given him a shot at cricketing stardom he would never have had at home.
And he is relishing the prospect of representing Bermuda on the biggest stage of all — the 2007 World Cup in West Indies.
“It would have been nice to draw South Africa but the likes of India and Sri Lanka are just as good. We are on the big scene now.
“Just being in their presence is important for a lot of us.
“I grew up admiring Tendulkar, Dravid and Muralitharan. And now I could be at the World Cup opening ceremony, standing right next to them and playing against them.”

Archives Contact Us Bermuda Sun Mandatory ‘blade’ sentences will miss the point
Tom Vesey, Sun Columnist
(Opinion from 2005-07-22 Edition)
New mandatory prison sentences for carrying ‘blades’ and ‘points’ in public may be bold – as the government declared two weeks ago – but they are also foolish. The move drew praise from both government and opposition MPs in the House of Assembly, and it is easy to understand why. The level of violence is appalling, and our frustration in dealing with it is high.
So it tempting to shake our fists and threaten long and mandatory prison sentences, ranging from seven to 10 years, and mandatory sentences of three for carrying a ‘blade’ or ‘point’ in a public place, or five years for carrying a ‘blade’ or ‘point’ on school premises.
There are certainly people who deserve these sentences, and a lot more people who might behave better if they knew they would spend years in prison if they were caught.
And the law should allow, and even encourage, judges to impose harsh sentences.

Shipwreck Capital of the Atlantic The Diving Experience
For almost 500 years, ships have collided with this Atlantic Island outpost, resulting in the world's greatest undersea collection of nautical history. At some sites, shipwrecks are almost piled one on top of another, allowing divers to explore multiple wrecks on the same dive. An aquatic museum, history comes alive as you swim amongst these marvelous treasures. As the island is almost completely encircled by a barrier reef, Bermuda also offers superb reef diving, coral grottos to explore, tunnels, archways and caves. The reefs (and shipwrecks) are populated with reef fish and marine varieties seen in the Caribbean plus some indigenous to Bermuda. The Island Experience
Take advantage of the sports facilities, soak up the Bermuda culture or simply relax and unwind. The Bermuda Shipwreck Certificate Program
As an added bonus to diving the historical shipwrecks of Bermuda, the Bermuda Dive Operators in cooperation with the Bermuda Department of Tourism are offering The Bermuda Shipwreck Certificate Program. By diving any of the 18 designated Shipwreck sites with any of Bermuda's five dive operators you will be awarded a signed Bermuda Shipwreck Certificate providing a brief history of the wreck documenting your dive. Sample Wrecks Program: Cristobal Colon
Aristo (Iristo)
Mary (Marie) Celeste

The Marie Celeste has one of the most interesting histories of all the wrecks in Bermuda. She was a civil war blockade-runner. A 207-ton paddle wheel, steamer. During The American Civil War, the north states tried to block any ships going to the south and thus prevent the south from being able to keep their war effort going. Bermuda used to act as a warehouse for any ships running the blockade taking guns and ammunition to the southern states. In return for this facility, the vessels would bring back cotton and cash. A very picturesque ship which has been engulfed by the sand, leaving a bow section, two boilers, both paddle wheels and the engines visible. Some of the stern section can also be seen. Occasionally, passing hurricanes will expose more of the deck. One of the paddle wheels is upright and totally encrusted with coral, making it an excellent subject for photographers.

32. Bermuda - Culture
Detailed information about culture in bermuda Island.
http://www.bermuda-island.net/INTRODUCTION/Culture.php
Bermuda INTRODUCTION Culture
Bermudian culture is a blend of British and African heritages. The British influences predominate in institutions, including the form of government, educational system and legal framework. Judges still wear powdered wigs, bobbies direct traffic, cricket is the most popular sport and a pint of ale at the local pub is a common way to cap off a day's work. English is spoken on Bermuda and the majority of islanders are Christian. The African influence is more subtle but can be found in island music and dance - particularly in music of African origin, which comes via the West Indies, such as reggae and calypso, and also in the rhythm of Gombey dancers. Gombey dancing is the most interesting art form unique to Bermuda. While it has roots in West African tribal music, Gombey dancing also incorporates influences from Christian missionaries, the British military and, most visibly, American Indians, from whom the Gombey dancers have adapted their costumes. To the uninitiated, the Gombey dancers may just look like wildly costumed characters jumping up and down to loud music, but in fact the dancing is carefully choreographed to specific rhythms and often portrays biblical stories. The dancers traditionally take to the streets on Boxing Day and New Year's Day. The cultural roots of Bermudian food are mostly British.

Right now, I am somewhere over the rainbow. I am in a tizz, unable to find my passport. The British Airways crew is having me recall where I could possibly have left it. They call Heathrow, hoping that I may have left it at the boarding desk. No luck. Eventually, a stewardess, slightly irritable, asks me to vacate my seat. The passport turns up beneath my footrest. Middle age has finally crashed through my consciousness. My daughter, Tamara, had taken me to the airport. I had obviously appeared flustered changing my passport and ticket from one envelope to another. She held my hand, took the envelopes from me, extracted the passport and ticket from one of them, and put the passport into my jacket pocket.
