Although the walk through the valley of the shadow of death is the toughest part of life for the human spirit to endure, most of us move beyond the shadows and once again enjoy the sunlight. Loss, Grief, and Bereavement
Introduction
People cope with the loss of a loved one in many ways. For some, the experience may lead to personal growth, even though it is a difficult and trying time. There is no right way of coping with death. The way a person grieves depends on the personality of that person and the relationship with the person who has died. How a person copes with grief is affected by the person's cultural and religious background, coping skills, mental history, support systems, and the person's social and financial status. The terms grief, bereavement, and mourning are often used in place of each other, but they have different meanings. Grief is the normal process of reacting to the loss. Grief reactions may be felt in response to physical losses (for example, a death) or in response to symbolic or social losses (for example, divorce or loss of a job). Each type of loss means the person has had something taken away. As a family goes through a cancer illness, many losses are experienced, and each triggers its own grief reaction. Grief may be experienced as a mental, physical, social, or emotional reaction. Mental reactions can include anger, guilt, anxiety, sadness, and despair. Physical reactions can include sleeping problems, changes in appetite, physical problems, or illness. Social reactions can include feelings about taking care of others in the family, seeing family or friends, or returning to work. As with bereavement, grief processes depend on the relationship with the person who died, the situation surrounding the death, and the person's attachment to the person who died. Grief may be described as the presence of physical problems, constant thoughts of the person who died, guilt, hostility, and a change in the way one normally acts.

Bereavement and Grief
What is bereavement and what is grief?

Bereavement is defined as a state of sadness or loneliness. Grief is the collection of feelings and behaviors associated with the loss of a person. The loss is commonly caused by death of a friend or family member. However, the loss can also be caused by such events as someone moving away or by a divorce.
What feelings and behaviors are associated with bereavement and grief?
Some feelings associated with bereavement and grief are numbness, loneliness, sadness, guilt, shock, anxiety, depression, anger, and agitation.
Some behaviors associated with bereavement and grief are crying, insomnia, restlessness, and withdrawal.
What are some of the characteristics associated with grief? It is extremely common for the person who is grieving to be critical of himself/herself for either doing something to or not doing something for the person who has died or left. It is also common for the grieving person to think that he/she should have died instead of the loved one. It is not unusual for the grieving person to be angry toward others, especially other family members or God. During the grief process many people are surprised to feel the strongest feelings they have ever felt in their lives. Having a depressed mood during grief is quite normal. Insomnia, crying spells and social withdrawal are common. However, a sense of worthlessness, severe guilt, or thoughts of suicide can signal a problem with the grief process. An evaluation and treatment by a professional can often help the person deal with both normal and abnormal feelings of grief.

Bereavement and Grief
Broadcast Monday 14 January 2002
with Norman Swan Summary:
This is a special program about debunking some myths about bereavement and grief. Guest on the program is Mal McKissock who has many years of experience in bereavement and grief counselling. This program was first broadcast on 11th June, 2001. Transcript:
Norman Swan: Welcome to a Health Report special, with me, Norman Swan. Unfortunately, all of us at some time will be bereaved; we’ll lose someone close to us and experience grief. Today’s program is about debunking some myths about bereavement, grief and grieving and perhaps give you another way of thinking about them. The person I’m talking to is bereavement counsellor, note bereavement, not grief, Mal McKissock. Mal McKissock has over 30 years experience in the field and works at the Bereavement Care Centre in Sydney. Among other things, you’ll hear that the Kubler-Ross idea of stages of grief isn’t quite right; you’ll find out what you should reasonably expect from your GP in the way of help and that certainly not everyone who’s bereaved needs professional assistance. Mal McKissock: Linguistically, bereavement is the condition, and grief is the emotional experience of it. But you could say that grief therefore would be a response to almost any sort of loss, whereas bereavement defines one sort of loss. So how you react in your bereavement will be your grief. So that’s why people grieve, but they don’t bereave.

Rituals of Mourning: Bereavement, Grief and Mourning in the First World War Christine Bourchier
M.A. Program, Department of History
University of Calgary
The way the death of a soldier from the British Empire was dealt with during the Great War (1914-1918) marked an emphatic departure from Victorian funeral customs. Victorian society was accustomed to a very public period of mourning which reinforced social and community ties. During the war, the death of a soldier was something many believed should not be mourned, as dying for "the cause," according to the rhetoric and propaganda of the Great War, was something to be celebrated rather than lamented. By looking at the purposes that rituals such as funeral rites serve a society, it becomes clear that funeral rites are a necessary part of human adaptation to death. The suppression of mourning from 1914-1918 acted to delay outpourings of grief but ultimately could not deny their emergence, in various forms, in the post-war period.
Anthropologists define rituals as collective affairs that are staged events, following a standard protocol each time they are performed. They are social acts basic to humanity, and serve as a mode of communication within the culture. Often rituals have religious significance, but this is not an intrinsic feature. The defining aspect of a ritual is that it is a "performance of more or less invariant sequences of formal acts and utterances not entirely encoded by the performers."
