OVERVIEW
Health care providers will encounter and experience grief throughout their personal and professional lives. ] The transition from the final stage of a cancer experience to the death of a loved one is made in different ways by different individuals and groups. In fact, one may find that the cancer experience, although it is difficult and trying, has led to significant personal growth. Coping with death is usually not an easy process and cannot be dealt with in a "cookbook" fashion. The way in which a person will grieve depends on the personality of the grieving individual and his or her relationship with the person who died. The cancer experience, the manner of disease progression, one's cultural and religious beliefs, coping skills and psychiatric history, the availability of support systems, and one's socioeconomic status also affect how a person will cope with grief.
Clarifying the following terms is important: bereavement, grief, and mourning. These terms are sometimes used interchangeably, yet often with different intentions.

Moving Through Loss and Grief
Bereavement, grief, mourning, what's the difference? Bereave means "to deprive, dispossess or strip from." It refers to the experience of uncontrollable loss (the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or other dementias) that leaves the person feeling helpless. Grief is the emotional response to the loss and can involve a variety of feelings, such as sadness, anger, guilt and anxiety. Mourning is the "social face" of grief, or how we express grief to others. While bereavement is choice-less, grief is not. Grief work is an active coping process that involves choosing to move through and not get stuck in negative emotions.

Guide to Grieving and Bereavement
On this page: What is grief and how does it differ from depression? What are the different types of grief? How does grief affect families and communities? Are there stages of grief? ... Related articles Did You Know? When someone is bereaved, they usually experience an intense feeling of sorrow - grief. People grieve in order to accept a deep loss and carry on with their life. Experts believe that if you do not grieve at the time of death, or shortly after, the grief may stay bottled up inside you. This can cause emotional problems or physical illness later on. Working through your grief can be a painful process, but it is necessary to ensure your future emotional and physical well-being.

100. Coping With The 5 Stages Of Grief And Bereavement
How to cope with grief and bereavement. What the 5 stages of grief and bereavment are. Coping with loss.
http://www.york-united-kingdom.co.uk/funerals/grief/
What is grief?
When grieving due to a loss or bereavement there are considered to be 5 stages
In this document I am simply outlining what my experience of grieving for a loved one has meant to me. Grieving is a very personal experience for everyone. No one human can or should tell you how to grieve. That is not the intent here. I hope this will help you identify what you are feeling. Also it is to let you know you are not alone with how you are feeling. I found it very helpful to have caring people around me to help me. At some time in life we all feel loss and must find a way to cope with it.
If you have grieved for someone and wish to add your experiences here so as to help others understand, please do not hesitate to Email us
1) DENIAL
In the denial stage we refuse to believe what has happened. We try in our mind to tell ourselves that life is as it was before our loss. We can even make believe to an extent by re enacting rituals that we used to go through with our loved one. Making an extra cup of tea for our loved one who is no longer there, rushing back to tell someone that you have met an old friend. Flashing back to times and conversations in the past as though they are here with us now. Introducing someone accidentally by your loved ones name to someone else. They can all be part of this stage.
2) ANGER
We get angry. The anger can manifest itself in many ways. We can blame others for our loss. We can become easily agitated having emotional outbursts. We can even become angry with ourselves. Care must be taken here not to turn this anger inwards. Release of this anger is a far better way to cope with grief in my experience. I found actually apologising to people after an outburst and explaining you are not yourself for given reasons was often accepted, especially by people who you know well.
