http://www.griefrelief.net/accidentaldeath.htm
The bereavement process for an accidental death is often difficult and complex. With an anticipated death, the remaining family and friends have an opportunity to establish a sense of closure. There is time to ask questions, express emotions and make peace with their loved one's passing. With an accidental death, there are often unresolved issues. The remaining family and friends may feel angry or guilty that they were unable to say goodbye, and might feel as though their loved one was taken unfairly or prematurely. A major difficulty for the survivors of an accidental death is the sense that the world is no longer stable. Feelings of vulnerability or anxiety may cause the survivors to feel as though everyone they know and love is at risk. Their sense of stability may further be threatened by the loss of income, home, or social status as a result of their loved one's death. Their family dynamic may be permanently altered by the loss of their family member, and may result in a sense of disarray and unease. Marital or other relationships may become strained as each person searches to reestablish their sense of security and place in the family once again. The bereaved's grief may be complicated by an involvement in the tragedy. They may suffer from "survivor guilt," in which the events of the accident are constantly replayed and the survivor is faced with a sense that they might have prevented the accident before it occurred. The media may cause further grief, especially if the deceased was a victim of a violent act and the family must endure invasive news coverage, frustrating legal processes, or in the worst case, an unrecovered body or unsolved murder. The sense that justice has not been met or that the circumstances surrounding the victim's death have not been fully addressed may lengthen the grief process significantly.

Bereavement Grief Counseling Program
Survivors can participate in the Center's "Journey Through Grief" lecture and discussion series which addresses issues such as anger, guilt, survival and healing over a period of six weeks. In addition, family members have the opportunity to join "grief-related" groups that offer support for the specific needs of widows, widowers, parents or children. Individual counseling is available for all situations. Children of all ages receive particularly careful handling within the Children's Bereavement Program. The age of the children and their involvement with the patient during a terminal illness are major considerations in determining what kind of support will be most helpful.

Dying, Death and Bereavement
Thanatology
Thanatology is the field that studies dying, death, and bereavement.

Thanatology is the study of dying and bereavement. In our society, there seems to be a taboo when talking about or dealing with death. Thus, thanatology is a relatively new field. Many people considered studying dying people very cold and heartless, but many more people know and understand everyone must die for the world to continue. In the 1950s and 60s, social scientists and psychologists began to explore the dying process. Programs were developed to provide counseling and therapy for dying individuals and their family members. The goal was to help them to better understand and cope with what was happening. Generally, counseling for dying patients and the family is based on a model that goes through a series of stages or phases. One of the first theories to address dying was Elizabeth Kubler-Ross' Stages of Dying . Since her early work, there have been a number of persons who have explored the processes of dying, grief, bereavement, and mourning. Bereavement, Grief, and Mourning

This is a gem of a book. Derek Doyle needs little introduction, as he has been at the forefront of the development of hospice and palliative care in the UK and internationally for many years, not least as senior editor of the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine. Now, in this delightful book, he treats us to his considered opinions, and very thoughtfully considered they are, about the fundamental issues involved in hospice and palliative care. Roger Woodruff

Transformation of Grief through Meaning-management* Paul T. P. Wong, PhD. C.Psych.
Trinity Western University
Langley, BC, Canada View printable version The paper examines the nature of bereavement grief and recognizes the complex pattern of emotional, cognitive, existential and spiritual coping reactions to the disruption of personal meaning systems. It proposes a process approach towards grief work, which encompasses several interrelated processes, such as mourning the loss, adjusting to the loss, accepting the loss and transforming the loss. It also recognizes different levels of acceptance and the paradoxical nature of transformation. Finally, it describes how grief can be transformed through meaning management. Introduction Grief is an inevitable, universal experience, more commonly experienced than death. So much of life is about loss. Going through life is to endure a series of losses, which include the loss of health, roles, identity, homeland, and loved ones through betrayal or death. Grief is the normal emotional response to loss. This paper focuses on bereavement grief.

    Sherri Alise Landsman
    Personalized Memorial Tributes After
The Death, and In Memory, of a Loved-One
Dear Bereaved Family, We are so sorry for the loss that has affected your lives. Our 23-year old daughter, Sherri, died December 2, 1990, after her 8-1/2 month struggle with leukemia and bone marrow transplant. As bereaved parents, we are always looking for ways to keep 'alive' her memory and her name. While driving in my car one day, I imagined the car in front of me bearing a bumper-sticker with Sherri's name on it. I then envisioned other cars bearing a 'monument' to other loved-ones whom have passed on. It was with that visualization and many tears that the 'Loved and Remembered' Bumper-Stickers evolved. We then created Return Address Labels and Note Cards with Sherri's picture on them for our own use, and were asked by other families to make these items available for them also. We created these tributes with love and in our daughter's memory, and continue to keep the costs as low as possible, to 'give back' to our bereaved family community. We hope that these personalized memorials on the following pages bring a level of comfort to you, your family, and your friends, in helping to keep your loved-one's memory and name 'alive'. Following the order forms for the memorial tributes is "Odyssey of a Bereaved Parent" (on page 5) which contains my thoughts and poems since our daughter's death. I think you will be able to relate to some of my writings as you travel your journey of grief. Please feel free to print this out and make any copies and distribute if you wish.
